You can use an AI model on your Mac from an Android phone without internet after setup: the Mac runs the model, and the phone connects to it over your local Wi-Fi. Download the software and model first, then keep a working local network between the devices. Losing internet access is fine; losing the local connection is not.
How the Mac-to-Android setup works
Your Mac is the inference host: it runs the model and processes prompts. Android is a client that sends prompts to the Mac and displays the responses. Ollama provides local model management and an API; you can connect through a browser interface such as Open WebUI or a compatible Android app.
This arrangement does not run the Mac’s model on the phone. The phone needs a route to the Mac over the local network, but the internet is not needed for ordinary local chat once the required software and model are already installed.

Choose how to access Ollama from Android

Set up Ollama on the Mac while you have internet
- Install Ollama on the Mac. Use the macOS installation instructions in the Ollama model library and documentation and check Ollama’s current quick-start instructions for the latest installation steps.
- Download a model. Pull a model while online, following the model’s instructions. Ollama’s command-line workflow includes commands such as
ollama pull MODELandollama run MODEL; replaceMODELwith the model name you choose. - Start the service and test locally. Run the selected model on the Mac and confirm it answers there before troubleshooting the phone connection. Ollama documents a local REST API for applications that connect to the service.
- Prepare any additional components. If you plan to use Open WebUI, install it and confirm it can reach Ollama. If it runs in Docker, do not assume that
localhostinside the container means the Mac host; it means the container itself. Follow the Open WebUI FAQ for Docker-to-host connectivity.
Connect Android to the Mac over local Wi-Fi
- Put both devices on the same accessible local network. A guest Wi-Fi network or work VLAN may block device-to-device traffic even if both devices have internet access.
- Find the Mac’s LAN IP address. Use the address assigned to the Mac on that local network, not
localhostor127.0.0.1. On Android, those addresses refer to the phone itself. - Allow Ollama to accept network connections. The cited independent Android client guide gives
OLLAMA_HOST=0.0.0.0as a host binding and says to restart after changing it. Follow the setup method for your Ollama installation and restart the service. Binding to all interfaces changes network exposure; restrict access to the intended private network and use appropriate firewall controls. - Test the connection in Chrome on Android. Open
http://<Mac-LAN-IP>:11434, replacing the example with the Mac’s actual LAN IP. The cited guide says a reachable Ollama server responds with “Ollama is running.” - Enter the same server address in your client. For the Android app, use the Mac’s LAN IP and port
11434as its Ollama server address. For Open WebUI, open the interface in the browser and ensure its Ollama connection points to a service it can actually reach.
The Android connection instructions above are from an independent, unofficial client publisher. In particular, app labels and configuration screens may differ in other clients.

Prepare for use after disconnecting the internet
Before going offline, test the complete workflow: start Ollama, load the model, connect from Android, send a prompt, and receive a response. Keep the Mac and Android connected to the same local network when internet access is unavailable.
Open WebUI’s offline instructions say to prepare the application image or packages, the local inference model, persistent caches, and any optional models or dependencies you intend to use. A local chat model does not automatically make every feature available offline:

- Document retrieval: stage the local embedding model and document-extraction dependencies you plan to use.
- Reranking or speech: download the corresponding models and dependencies before disconnecting.
- Other integrations: hosted search, external model APIs, OAuth, or other configured services may still need an internet connection.
Open WebUI’s offline mode variables do not block all external connections. If your goal is enforced isolation rather than simply being able to chat without internet, use separate controls such as firewall rules, container networking, or physical network isolation. Preserve the local network paths needed between Android, the interface, and Ollama.

Troubleshoot common connection and offline failures
- Android cannot reach the server: verify both devices are on the same Wi-Fi and that it allows local device-to-device traffic. Check that Android is not using cellular data for the attempted connection.
- The address does not work: use the Mac’s LAN IP, not
localhostor127.0.0.1on the phone. - The server responds on the Mac but not the phone: check Ollama’s network binding, restart it after a binding change, and try the Chrome test again.
- The local IP and port still fail: check whether the Mac firewall blocks the intended local connection to port
11434. - Open WebUI in Docker cannot contact Ollama: container-local
localhostis not the Mac host. Use a host address or Docker networking route that the container can reach, then verify the connection. - The interface opens offline but a feature fails: check that its models, caches, and dependencies were downloaded before disconnecting. Review logs for missing assets or attempted downloads.
What “no internet required” does—and does not—mean
Once the application, model, and needed assets are present, local chat can work without internet because the Mac performs inference locally. Android still needs a local route to the Mac. A computer with no Wi-Fi or other local connection cannot be reached by this phone-to-Mac workflow, and a feature that depends on an unprepared asset or an external service may not work offline.
