Story Engine’s draft-review workspace moved from a locally opened web page to an MCP UI resource that a compatible host can present in a built-in Tab beside the project conversation. The intended benefit is practical: keep the conversation for discussing a change in view while reviewing the draft, instead of repeatedly switching between chat and a separate page.

Why move draft review out of a separate page?

Story Engine originally opened its review workspace through a local website. There, a user could browse drafts, read an article, and edit it before publication; project discussion happened elsewhere. That separated two parts of the same task: discussing a change and reviewing the draft it affects.

Putting the entire review page directly into the conversation was not a clean fix. Long articles could occupy most of the chat, making it awkward to move between the discussion and the draft. The reported redesign instead lets the host present the workspace in a separate built-in Tab alongside the conversation.

What the MCP UI resource changes

The described implementation packages the existing page, styles, scripts, and brand assets as an MCP UI resource. In the general MCP Apps pattern, a tool can include UI metadata that points to such a resource. The host fetches and renders it in a sandboxed iframe, while the host and interface communicate through JSON-RPC over postMessage. The protocol describes the mechanism; it does not require every client to offer the same presentation or a Tab.

Story Engine’s compact entry point requests expanded presentation once when it initializes. In the client described in the article, that presentation creates the built-in Tab. The host controls whether and how to show the expanded interface, so the request is not a guarantee that the Tab will appear. If it does not switch views, the interface leaves an “Open Tab” button as a manual fallback. Closing the Tab does not trigger an automatic reopening loop.

The article describes the resulting layout as the conversation at left and a named Story Engine draft library Tab at right. That arrangement is the host’s presentation of the UI resource; it does not mean Story Engine has become a hosted web service.

What stays local—and what must stay in sync

Existing business operations and data

According to the article, the hosted interface uses the same business service as the browser version and continues to use Story Engine’s local data store. The change is how the review UI is presented, not a move to remote storage or a replacement of the underlying business operations.

OpenAI’s developer guidance describes MCP UI resources as optional components rendered alongside conversation and recommends that tools remain useful when a client cannot render the component. That is general compatibility guidance, not evidence that every Story Engine action works in every host.

UI resources and tool registrations have a version boundary

The article reports a mismatch case: a newer UI could reach an older running process whose tool registrations were out of date. To avoid serving a UI snapshot inconsistent with those registrations, new processes retain the bundled UI snapshot associated with their tool registrations. Adding tools still requires the client to reload the updated server; updating the interface alone does not register new tools in an already-running process.

What has been demonstrated—and what remains unverified

The article reports source inspection and simulated-host checks for the compact entry point, the expanded-presentation request, its fallback behavior, and shared operations. An accompanying user-provided screenshot shows the conversation beside the open Story Engine draft library Tab. The screenshot establishes the displayed layout, but not how the Tab was opened; it cannot confirm that the presentation request opened it automatically.

The evidence does not establish that every review action was exercised inside the Tab, or that the complete opening, review, and return journey works across supported clients. The article identifies those as remaining verification work, including a clean installation and the behavior of older running plugin processes. MCP Apps is an official MCP extension, but its announcement describes client support as evolving, so the general pattern should not be read as a guarantee of identical host behavior.
