If Windows 11 loses internet after waking from sleep, first check whether Wi-Fi is actually disconnected, connected without internet, or working everywhere except one app or site. Then compare another device on the same network. These checks help determine whether to troubleshoot the PC, the shared network, or a single service before changing adapter settings or resetting Windows networking.
Check what failed after waking
Look at the network icon in the taskbar. Is Wi-Fi off, is the expected network disconnected, or does Windows show a connection without internet access? Also confirm that Airplane mode is off. Windows keeps Wi-Fi and Airplane mode controls in Settings > Network & internet; their availability and labels can vary slightly by device.
If Windows says it is connected but only one app or website fails, the connection may be working and the problem may be limited to that service or a firewall. Run Windows’ first automated check
Open the Get Help app and run the Network and Internet troubleshooter. Microsoft recommends this as the first automated diagnostic for Windows 11 network issues. Follow the prompts, then check whether the connection returns.

Find out whether the problem is this PC or the network
Try connecting another phone, tablet, or computer to the same Wi-Fi network. This comparison is often the quickest way to choose the next step.
- Other devices also cannot connect: the issue may be with the router, modem, or internet service rather than just the Windows PC.
- Other devices work: focus on the affected PC and its saved connection, adapter, or driver.
If several devices are offline
Restart the modem and router. Microsoft advises unplugging both, waiting about 30 seconds, restoring power, and waiting for their status lights to settle before testing again. Everyone using that network will lose the connection while the equipment restarts. Follow the equipment maker’s instructions if its restart procedure differs.

If only the Windows PC is affected
Try forgetting the saved Wi-Fi network and reconnecting with its password. In Windows 11, open Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi > Manage known networks, select the affected network, and choose Forget. Then select the Wi-Fi icon in the taskbar and connect to the network again. If your router offers separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network names, Microsoft suggests trying the other band.

If Wi-Fi-specific checks point toward the router, test the PC with Ethernet if you can. Microsoft says that if the PC reaches the internet through a direct Ethernet connection to the modem, the Wi-Fi router is implicated; check the router’s firmware and documentation. This is a way to narrow down the fault, not evidence that the router needs replacing. Check that the PC has an Ethernet port or a compatible adapter before using this test. For recurring failures, check adapter power and drivers
If Wi-Fi disconnects after sleep repeatedly and other devices keep working, investigate the PC’s wireless adapter. Neither a power-management setting nor a driver problem is established as the cause in every case; treat these as troubleshooting steps, not a diagnosis.
Check the adapter’s power-management setting
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters, right-click the Wi-Fi adapter, and select Properties.
- If the adapter has a Power Management tab, clear Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power, then select OK.
Not every adapter exposes the same tabs or settings. Microsoft’s general Wi-Fi troubleshooting steps include checking this option for connection problems; see Microsoft’s adapter and Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.

Update or reinstall the correct driver
Check the PC manufacturer’s support page for a current driver for the exact PC model and Windows version. If the problem began after a driver update, the manufacturer’s driver may be useful to have before uninstalling the current one. Download the installer while the PC is online, or use another computer and a USB drive if it is not.

If it does not, run the saved manufacturer installer. Microsoft advises checking that device drivers are current when devices fail to work properly after waking; its guidance does not identify one universally faulty Windows 11 build, adapter, or update for this symptom. Try network commands only after the simpler checks
If basic checks, reconnecting, and adapter-specific steps have not restored access, Microsoft provides this sequence for an administrator Command Prompt. Run each command in order, wait for it to finish, then check the connection:
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdnsThe commands reset Winsock and TCP/IP, release and renew the IP address, and clear the DNS resolver cache. They change networking state, so use them after simpler checks rather than as the first response to a post-sleep dropout. Microsoft’s sequence appears in its Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide.
Use Network reset as a last resort
Network reset removes installed network adapters and their settings. After the PC restarts, Windows reinstalls the adapters with default settings. VPN software or Hyper-V virtual switches may need to be installed or configured again, and known networks may change to a public profile, affecting discoverability on a local network.

If other devices also fail after waking
If several connected devices stop working properly after waking, try disconnecting and reconnecting them or restarting the PC while you continue diagnosing the shared network. Microsoft also recommends checking that device drivers are current. Its guidance offers general recovery steps, not a single confirmed cause for every Windows 11 sleep-resume internet failure.
