A “slow cursor” in Excel can mean the mouse pointer moves slowly, the selected cell responds late, scrolling stutters, or the worksheet redraws after a delay. First check whether the mouse pointer also lags outside Excel and whether the problem happens in every workbook or just one. Those two checks point you toward the right troubleshooting path.
Identify what is lagging and where
Move the mouse pointer around outside Excel, then test it in a different app. If the pointer is slow everywhere, start with the mouse or computer rather than Excel. If the pointer is smooth elsewhere but Excel responds late, focus on Excel, its add-ins, or the affected workbook.
In Excel, check whether the delay affects every workbook or only one, and note what triggers it: opening the app, selecting cells, scrolling, editing, or waiting for the sheet to redraw. Also note your Excel edition, Windows or macOS version, and whether you use external or high-resolution monitors. The steps below are primarily for Excel on Windows; menu names and feature availability can vary by version.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

On Windows, Excel Safe Mode bypasses some functionality and settings, including Excel add-ins and most COM add-ins. If the lag improves in Safe Mode, that is a useful clue that an add-in or startup component may be contributing; it is not by itself proof of the cause. Microsoft documents this test and the add-in isolation steps in its instructions for opening Office apps in Safe Mode.

- Close Excel.
- Open the Windows Run dialog, type
Excel /safe, and press Enter. - Try the action that usually causes lag. If Excel behaves normally, close it and reopen it normally to test COM add-ins.
- In Excel, go to File > Options > Add-ins. At the bottom, choose COM Add-ins in the Manage list, select Go, and clear the selected add-ins.
- Restart Excel normally and retest. If the lag is gone, enable add-ins one at a time, restarting and testing after each one to identify a possible conflict.
Microsoft notes that add-ins can occasionally interfere with Excel in its Excel troubleshooting guidance. Avoid registry changes as a general first step: incorrect registry edits can cause serious problems.
Try graphics settings only when the symptoms fit
Graphics changes are targeted tests, not universal fixes for a slow cursor. Microsoft’s Excel performance guidance lists disabling hardware graphics acceleration for general slowness on a computer without a dedicated GPU or with an older graphics card or driver. It also recommends testing Office’s Optimize for compatibility mode for slowness with multiple high-resolution monitors and per-monitor dynamic high-definition awareness.

If your lag is limited to a particular visual setup, look for the corresponding graphics or compatibility setting in your Office version and test one change at a time. The exact menu location and availability vary by version. If the symptoms do not match these cases, graphics settings are not an established explanation for the lag.
When only one workbook is slow, check its contents
If other workbooks respond normally, the problem may be specific to the affected file. In Microsoft 365, Excel’s Review > Check Performance feature can identify cells that may be optimized. A workbook can accumulate cells with formatting, blanks, or non-printing characters even where there is no data; too many may slow the workbook or make it unresponsive.

- Inspect the cells Excel identifies, then choose Optimize all or Optimize sheet as appropriate.
- Save the workbook and retest the action that was slow.
Microsoft describes this feature for Microsoft 365 in its guidance on optimizing Excel performance; it is not a feature to assume exists in every Excel edition.
Consider other causes without disabling protection
Microsoft also notes that antivirus software integration can contribute to performance issues in some cases. If the slowdown began after a security-software change, ask that product’s vendor for guidance on its Excel integration. Do not turn off antivirus protection wholesale as a troubleshooting shortcut.

- Your hand can relax in comfort hour after hour with this ergonomically designed mouse. Its contoured shape with soft rubber grips, gently curved sides and broad palm area give you the support you need for effortless control all day long.
- You’ve got the control to do more, faster. Flipping through photo albums and Web pages is a breeze, especially for right-handers—with three standard buttons plus Back/Forward buttons that you can also program to switch applications, go full screen and more. - Two years of battery life practically eliminates the need to replace batteries. ** The On/Off switch helps conserve power, smart sleep mode extends battery life and an indicator light eliminates surprises. ** Battery life may vary based on user and computing conditions.
- The tiny Logitech Unifying receiver stays in your laptop. There’s no need to unplug it when you move around, so there’s less worry of it being lost. And you can easily add compatible wireless mice and keyboards to the same wireless receiver.
Excel’s performance guidance covers other narrowly defined symptoms too. For example, sequential cell-editing slowness may relate to Flash Fill, but that does not establish Flash Fill as a cause of pointer or selection lag.
