On an Amazon Echo speaker, a brief purple light after you make a request usually means Do Not Disturb is on. Purple during initial setup points to a Wi-Fi issue. The pulse pattern matters too: Amazon’s indicator guide distinguishes slow purple pulsing for Do Not Disturb from fast purple pulsing as an error indicator.
What the purple light means in different situations
| When you see purple | What it indicates | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Briefly after a request | Do Not Disturb is on, according to Amazon’s Echo speaker guidance. | Check whether Do Not Disturb is enabled if you want Alexa to respond to calls or notifications. |
| During initial setup | A Wi-Fi issue, according to Amazon’s Echo speaker support page. The light does not identify a particular router, password, or outage. | Confirm your home network is available and that the Echo can connect during setup. |
| Slowly pulsing | Do Not Disturb in Amazon’s indicator guidance. | Use the context—such as whether it appeared after a request—to interpret the indicator. |
| Quickly pulsing | An error indicator in Amazon’s developer guidance. The cited guidance does not specify a single cause for this pattern. | Consider whether the speaker is also having a connection or response problem before troubleshooting. |
How to interpret the light without overreacting
Start with when the light appeared, then note whether it was a brief flash or a pulse and how quickly it pulsed. A brief purple flash after a request is an expected sign of a setting, not proof that the speaker is faulty. During setup, Amazon associates purple with Wi-Fi trouble, but the indicator alone does not diagnose the cause.
The pattern descriptions come from separate Amazon guidance: the Echo speaker help page covers a brief post-request light and setup, while the developer guide describes slow and quick pulses. Treat context and pulse pattern together rather than assuming every purple light has one universal meaning.

What to check if Alexa is not responding
A purple light alone does not mean you need to troubleshoot. If Alexa is also unresponsive, Amazon recommends these first checks in its troubleshooting guidance:
#1 Best Overall
- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
- Use the power adapter supplied with the Echo.
- Confirm your internet connection is active and check that the Echo is connected to Wi-Fi.
- Make sure the device is not muted.
- Place the speaker away from walls and other speakers, and reduce background noise.
- Try pressing the Action button.
- Unplug the Echo, reconnect it, and allow it to restart.
These checks address an accompanying response problem; a purple indicator by itself is not a reason to reset the speaker.
Why the device model matters
This explanation is for Amazon Echo speakers. Alexa-enabled devices do not all use identical indicator guidance: Amazon’s Echo Auto support page, for example, describes purple during initial setup as a possible setup failure. Don’t apply speaker guidance to another device family without checking that model’s instructions.
