Start by confirming that Spotify is not in Offline mode, then test whether other apps and websites reach the internet on the same computer. Those two checks take a few minutes and point you toward the right fix. Error Code 4 is reported by Windows users as a “no internet” message even when the connection appears to work, but the reports do not show one shared cause, so treat the steps below as a process of elimination rather than a guaranteed repair.
What Error Code 4 means in practice
Users describe Error Code 4 on the Spotify Windows desktop app as a situation where Spotify cannot reach the internet while other activity seems normal. Community posts use phrasing such as “my Spotify desktop app is not able to go online despite a working internet connection (error code 4)” and “unable to find internet connection (error code:4) only on desktop app.” These are user descriptions, not a formal Spotify definition. Spotify’s own offline troubleshooting page does not single out this code, and the detailed Windows steps come from Spotify Community guidance rather than an official error-code reference. The practical consequence is that the symptom is the only reliable constant, so the work is in ruling causes out.
Step 1: Turn off Offline mode
- Open the Spotify desktop app.
- Click the three-dot menu, then open File.
- Make sure Offline mode is switched off.
- Try playing a song or opening a playlist you have not downloaded.
If Offline mode was on, the app will refuse to stream and can display a connection-style message even when your network is fine. If it was already off, or content still will not load, move on to the connection tests.

- Other apps and sites also fail: the problem is the Wi-Fi or internet connection itself. Spotify’s support guidance suggests turning Wi-Fi off and on, waiting 30 seconds, and then trying again. If the connection still fails, restart your home router according to the router maker’s instructions.
- Other apps and sites work but Spotify does not: the fault is more likely on the Spotify or Windows side. Continue with the steps below.
If you are on a school, office, or public network, ask the network administrator whether Spotify or streaming services are restricted. Shared networks can block services without any visible error elsewhere. If practical, try a different Wi-Fi network or a phone hotspot. If Spotify works there, the original network is the likely restriction, and Spotify recommends contacting the provider of that connection. Do not try to bypass network restrictions yourself.
Step 3: Compare Spotify across devices and clients
Use the comparison below to narrow the cause. Each result is a clue, not a diagnosis.

| What you observe | What it suggests | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Other sites and apps fail on the same PC | Connection problem affecting the whole computer | Restart Wi-Fi and router; check the network |
| Spotify fails on the PC but works on a phone on the same network | Desktop app or its Windows network path | Continue to firewall, proxy, and app steps |
| Spotify fails in the Windows app but works in the web player on the same PC | Desktop app specific | Focus on firewall, proxy, and reinstall steps |
| Spotify fails on every device and network | Possibly a service-side or account-side issue | Check Spotify’s official status and ongoing-issues channels |
| Spotify works on another network | Restriction or configuration on the original network | Contact the provider or network administrator |
Spotify Support’s playing guidance and the Spotify Community connection FAQ both recommend comparing devices and connections in this way. The Community FAQ is user-to-user guidance rather than an official Spotify publication, so treat its suggestions as practical advice.

Step 4: Check the firewall and proxy settings
Spotify’s official offline page includes this instruction: “Check your firewall (if you use one) to see if it has Spotify set as an exception.” Look in the firewall or security product already installed on the PC and confirm that Spotify is allowed. Do not turn protection off permanently to test the app; if you temporarily disable a security tool, turn it back on afterward.

For proxies, Spotify Community guidance recommends confirming that Spotify’s own proxy setting is No proxy when you do not intend to use a proxy. You can also review the Windows proxy settings, which Microsoft’s Windows support documentation covers in its general Wi-Fi and proxy troubleshooting material. If the computer belongs to a workplace or school, a managed proxy or policy may be intentional. In that case, ask the administrator before changing it.
Step 5: Consider software conflicts and deeper Windows checks
A Spotify Community moderator’s consolidated answer lists several deeper checks. They are community suggestions, and the source does not establish that each one applies to every Error Code 4 case.

- Test in Safe Mode with Networking. If Spotify works there, a startup program or security or network software is a likely suspect. Reboot normally afterward.
- Review the hosts file. Look for unexpected entries that redirect Spotify domains. Make a backup copy before editing it, and do not delete entries you do not recognize without checking what they do.
- Flush the DNS cache. Running
ipconfig /flushdnsin an elevated Command Prompt clears cached name lookups. It is low risk and easy to repeat. - Check antivirus and firewall allowance. This repeats Step 4 with the security software’s own network controls.
- Reinstall the network adapter driver. Use Device Manager only if you can reinstall the driver again if the result is worse. Keep a recovery plan, such as a restore point, before removing any driver.
Step 6: Reinstall Spotify as a last app-level step
Spotify’s offline troubleshooting page links to its reinstall instructions, and Community guidance recommends a clean reinstall once simpler checks have failed. If the problem persists after reinstalling, compare the version installed from Spotify’s website with the version from the Microsoft Store, since they are separate installations. A successful reinstall can clear an app-specific fault, but it does not prove the network was never the issue, so keep the comparison results from Steps 2 and 3 when you evaluate the outcome.
When the code keeps returning
If Spotify still shows the error after these steps, record which tests passed and which failed. Note whether other devices on the same network work, whether the web player works on the same PC, and whether the failure started after a Windows update, security software change, or network change. That record is the most useful thing to give a network administrator, your internet provider, or Spotify Support.
