A command that finishes—or an export file that opens—is not proof that an eleven-year notes archive made it across intact. A reliable check has to look beyond the exit status: confirm the output exists, compare what was exported with what you expected, and inspect notes that test attachments, links, and metadata. The specific CLI and three incidents behind this title are not identified, so the examples below are documented failure modes and product caveats, not claims about those events.
How can an export look successful and still be incomplete?
Export success has several layers: the command runs, files are created, and the notes and related data you need are actually present and usable. Those are different outcomes. A zero exit code may not tell the whole story, and a readable export may omit attachments or organizational structure.
One Obsidian forum user reported that, on Obsidian 1.12.4 for macOS, the obsidian move command printed an ENOENT error because the destination’s parent directory did not exist, yet returned exit code 0. That is a single community report, not proof that every Obsidian CLI command—or current releases—behaves this way. It does illustrate why the exit status should be checked alongside command output and the resulting files. Read the forum report.
What can a notes export leave behind?
Attachments may not travel with a readable document
Evernote’s PDF export is designed to make note content readable, but Evernote says attachments such as PDFs and other files are represented by symbolic images rather than embedded as actual attachment files. The page says note text and embedded images are included. If you need usable attachment files alongside the notes, Evernote points to HTML or ENEX instead. Evernote’s PDF export guidance.

Importing can change the archive’s organization
Evernote says its import process brings in notes, titles, and available attributes, but does not retain notebook structure. Apple’s ENEX import has a different limitation: it converts notes individually, and does not import attachments or features that Apple Notes does not support. Choose an export format for what you need to preserve
Evernote documents ENEX and HTML export from its Mac or Windows desktop app; exporting is not available from Evernote Web. Its export instructions allow selecting notes or a notebook, then choosing ENEX, single-page HTML, or multi-page HTML. Multi-page HTML includes an index and a resource folder; single-page HTML includes a resource folder. These details apply to Evernote’s documented export, not to CLI tools generally. How to check whether your notes export really worked
No cited product provides a universal validation checklist. These checks are practical safeguards derived from the documented false-success report and the format and import limitations above.

- Read the command output as well as its exit status. Look for explicit errors, warnings, skipped items, or failed paths. A zero exit code alone cannot verify completeness.
- Confirm the expected output exists and is plausible. Check that the destination contains the files you expected, not merely that the command returned.
- Compare scope against a known source. If the source app can show the number of notes in the selected archive or notebook, compare that with the exported or imported result. Treat a mismatch as a reason to investigate rather than assuming it is harmless.
- Open representative notes in the exported result. Include examples with attachments, links, and metadata or attributes you rely on. Verify that attached files are present and usable, not just represented by a link, icon, or image.
- Check organization after import. If notebook or folder structure matters, inspect whether the destination preserved it; Evernote’s documented import, for example, does not retain notebook structure.
What this title does—and does not—establish
The author’s CLI, notes application, and three specific failures are not identified by the available evidence. The Obsidian forum report is a relevant example of an apparent-success signal, while Evernote and Apple’s documentation show how readable exports and completed imports can still omit or alter parts of an archive. None of those examples can be assigned to the title’s unnamed incidents.
