To install Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) on Windows 10, use a Pro or Enterprise PC with Windows 10 version 1809 or later, then add the specific RSAT capability you need through Optional Features or PowerShell. RSAT supplies client-side tools for managing Windows Server; it does not grant access by itself. You still need network connectivity and the appropriate permissions on the server.
One support caveat matters: Windows 10 version 22H2 stopped receiving updates on October 14, 2025. The installation steps below describe RSAT mechanics, not a recommendation to keep using an unsupported Windows release. LTSC editions have their own lifecycle dates.
What RSAT does—and what it does not do
Remote Server Administration Tools are utilities that let IT administrators manage Windows Server roles and features from a Windows client. Microsoft groups them into Server Manager, MMC snap-ins, PowerShell modules, and command-line tools. RSAT is installed on the administrator’s PC, not as a server role on the machine being managed.

Installing a tool does not configure the network connection or authorize your account on a remote server. You need a reachable server and the permissions required for the particular service or task.

Check Windows 10 eligibility first
- Edition: Microsoft’s Windows 10 RSAT guidance specifies Pro or Enterprise. Home editions are not supported for RSAT installation.
- Release: The Windows 10 installation guidance applies to version 1809 and later, with the October 2018 cumulative update or later. On these releases, RSAT is an optional Windows capability rather than a separate legacy download.
- Support status: Windows 10 version 22H2 reached end of updates on October 14, 2025. Check the lifecycle for your exact LTSC edition if applicable; its date may differ.
See Microsoft’s RSAT installation and management guidance, its Windows client support article, and the Windows 10 lifecycle page.
Choose the RSAT components for your task
RSAT is a collection of separate capabilities, not one all-or-nothing package. Install the components that match the server service you administer. Availability and dependencies can vary by Windows release, so confirm the capability name on the target PC before installing.

| Administrative task | RSAT component to look for |
|---|---|
| Manage Active Directory domains, users, computers, or LDS | Active Directory Domain Services and Lightweight Directory Services tools |
| Manage Group Policy | Group Policy Management tools |
| Manage name resolution | DNS Server tools |
| Manage address allocation | DHCP Server tools |
| Manage failover clusters | Failover Cluster tools; the capability reference lists File Services tools as a dependency |
Other available components include Active Directory Certificate Services, BitLocker recovery tools, and File Services. Consult Microsoft’s RSAT component guidance and Features on Demand reference for the capability list and dependencies. A component may provide an MMC interface, a PowerShell module, a command-line utility, or more than one way to work.
Install RSAT through Windows Settings
- Sign in to the Windows 10 PC with an account that has administrative privileges.
- Open Settings > Apps > Optional features. On some Windows 10 servicing levels, including 22H2, the path may appear as Settings > System > Optional features.
- Select Add a feature, search for the RSAT component by name, and select Install. The exact wording or layout can vary by servicing level.
- When installation finishes, open the relevant utility from Server Manager’s Tools menu or Windows Tools.
Install a component with PowerShell
PowerShell is useful when you want to inspect available capabilities, install a precise component, or repeat the process across machines. Open PowerShell as Administrator.

- 256GB Solid State Drive
- 15.6" Micro-edge touchscreen display
- List RSAT capabilities and their installation states:
Get-WindowsCapability -Online | Where-Object Name -like 'RSAT*'
- Copy the exact capability name returned for the tool you need, then install it. For example, to add Active Directory Domain Services and Lightweight Directory Services tools, run:
Add-WindowsCapability -Online -Name Rsat.ActiveDirectory.DS-LDS.Tools~~~~0.0.1.0
Check the command’s result for installation status and whether a restart is needed. Microsoft’s example reports RestartNeeded: False, but that result should not be assumed for every system.
Install RSAT from offline or managed media
In an offline environment, or where Windows Update or WSUS cannot supply the payload, Microsoft documents installing Features on Demand with DISM and a matching source repository. Use the /Source option to point DISM to the appropriate Features on Demand files or mounted Languages and Optional Features media.

- Wireless Wifi & Bluetooth
Match the source media to the target Windows release and architecture. Microsoft’s media mapping associates Windows 10 version 2004 and later with the Windows 10 version 2004 Features on Demand ISO; earlier Windows releases map to their corresponding media. See Microsoft’s Features on Demand deployment documentation for the supported source procedure and component details.
Connect to and manage a server
After installation, launch the relevant tool and use its server-selection workflow to connect to the intended host. The exact connection steps depend on the utility—for example, a management console may ask you to select or add a server. Confirm that the host is reachable and that your account has the rights required for the operation. Installing RSAT alone does not configure either prerequisite.

Troubleshoot common RSAT problems
RSAT is missing from Optional Features
Confirm the PC is running Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise and a supported RSAT release path—version 1809 or later. Older instructions that send you to Control Panel’s Turn Windows features on or off do not describe the Optional Features flow used for these releases.
The component you need is not listed
Run Get-WindowsCapability -Online | Where-Object Name -like 'RSAT*' to inspect the capabilities available on that PC. Check Microsoft’s Features on Demand reference for release-specific availability and dependencies rather than assuming every RSAT tool is present on every Windows version.
Installation or download fails
In a managed environment, check whether Windows Update or WSUS policy allows the optional-feature payload to be obtained, and whether the configured Features on Demand source is accessible. For an offline installation, verify that the DISM source matches the target release and architecture.
