OnCall Memory is a hackathon demo that gives an AI incident helper access to examples of earlier incidents and their outcomes. Built with a FastAPI backend and a single-page frontend for a fictional fintech called Northwind Pay, it compares an answer based only on a new alert and logs with one informed by memories retrieved from Hindsight. It shows how past fixes—including failed ones—could add team-specific context to troubleshooting, but it does not establish that the approach improves real incident response.
How OnCall Memory uses past incidents
The project author describes a loop in which an engineer submits an alert and logs, then sees two AI responses: one without recalled incident context and another after the app searches Hindsight. The interface also shows the retrieved memory chunks and the incidents they came from, so an engineer can inspect the context behind a suggestion rather than treating it as an unexplained answer.
- Submit the current incident: Provide an alert and relevant logs through the app.
- Compare responses: The backend generates an answer using only the new incident information and another with relevant memories retrieved from Hindsight.
- Inspect the sources: Review the recalled chunks and their source incidents alongside the answers.
- Record the outcome: After trying a fix, mark whether it worked or failed and provide a description. The author says this feedback is retained for later incidents.
- Look for recurring patterns: Use the separate “Systemic Insights” action to reflect across the memory bank.
The intended benefit is practical context: an assistant may be able to surface how a team handled a similar failure and what happened after a particular fix. A retrieved example is evidence to review, not proof that the current incident has the same cause or that the old remedy is safe now.
What Hindsight contributes
Hindsight is the persistent memory layer in the demo; it is not the incident-management workflow itself. Its documentation describes three operations: retain stores information and extracts facts, entities, and temporal details; recall searches stored memories; and reflect reasons over retrieved memories. Memory banks separate contexts, and Hindsight describes a hierarchy of world facts, experience facts, observations, and mental models.

According to the Hindsight Quickstart, recall runs semantic, keyword/BM25, graph, and temporal strategies in parallel. That is Hindsight’s documented retrieval approach. The project article describes querying the bank with alert text and logs; it does not establish the retrieval strategy or settings used by the demo.
In short, the agent can accumulate incident examples and outcomes, retrieve potentially relevant ones when a new alert arrives, and make those memories available to its language model. The quality of its advice still depends on whether the examples are relevant, accurate, current, and safe to apply.

What the demo’s incident bank contains
The project author reports that the fictional northwind-oncall bank was seeded with 25 realistic incidents and that Hindsight split them into about 90 memory entries. These are the author’s demo-data counts, not deployment-scale statistics. Each example reportedly includes a date, affected service, error logs, root cause, fix steps, time to resolve, and whether the fix worked.

One scenario warns against rebooting a database by recalling a fictional example in which an RDS reboot led to an 85-minute outage. That duration belongs to the project author’s demo scenario; it is not a real incident statistic or evidence about the typical impact of a reboot.
What is demonstrated—and what is not
The author reports three Demo Mode scenarios: an initial alert, the same root cause appearing with different symptoms, and a warning informed by a previously failed fix. Together, they illustrate the intended interaction: retrieve relevant history, expose its source, and preserve outcomes for future use.

The article does not report production deployment, a controlled evaluation, or measured changes in mean time to resolution, outage frequency, or diagnosis accuracy. It also does not establish PagerDuty integration or automatic ingestion of alerts and postmortems. The author presents those, along with per-team memory banks and fix tracking, as possible production extensions rather than shipped demo capabilities.
Hindsight’s repository and an ACL Anthology paper report results on LongMemEval for specified configurations. Those are memory-task benchmarks, not tests of incident diagnosis or operational improvement in OnCall Memory; they cannot establish that this demo gives correct recommendations or reduces response time.

What a production version would need
Moving from a seeded demo to an operational tool would require more than connecting an alert to a memory search. Before relying on recommendations during incidents, a team would need to validate the system against representative cases and decide how it handles sensitive operational data.
- Reliable inputs: Define how alerts, logs, postmortems, and fix outcomes enter the memory system, and how incomplete or incorrect records are corrected.
- Relevant, reviewable retrieval: Test whether recalled incidents actually match the current failure, and preserve source visibility so responders can judge the connection.
- Freshness and control: Establish how stale advice is updated, and how memories can be corrected or deleted when circumstances change.
- Data protection and isolation: Logs may contain secrets or sensitive details. Set policies for redaction, access, retention, and separation between teams before storing operational records.
- Measured value and safety: Evaluate recommendations on representative incident cases, including failed fixes and misleading similarities. Measure outcomes rather than assuming memory improves response.
The project article does not detail its data governance, secret handling, retention policy, access controls, or production security design, so those should be treated as open implementation questions—not as verified defects in the demo. Hindsight documents managed cloud infrastructure, API integration, team management, usage analytics, and token-based usage; some enterprise capabilities depend on plan or contract, so current terms should be checked with Hindsight Cloud documentation. Its official repository describes self-hosting and production options including PostgreSQL with pgvector or Oracle AI Database, along with operational metrics and webhooks. Neither source establishes which deployment topology the demo used.
