To make a subreddit, which Reddit now generally calls a community, you sign in, open the create flow on Reddit.com or in the mobile app, and enter a name, a description, up to three topics, a community type, and an 18+ setting if the content needs one. The decisions that matter most come before you press Create: the purpose of the space, the name (which cannot be changed later), and the access type. Reddit Help’s creation instructions were updated October 5, 2026, so check the steps against your own screen, because menu labels can change.
Decide what the community is for before you create it
Write down the intended audience and purpose in one or two sentences. A community about “vintage mechanical keyboards for beginners” is easier to run and easier for people to find than one about “tech.” Reddit Help suggests checking whether an active community with the same purpose already exists. If one does, you may be better off participating there, or you should be able to explain what distinct need your new community serves.
Choose a name you can live with
Reddit Help says a community name must be 3 to 21 characters. The name cannot be edited after creation, and that includes capitalization, so a name entered as RetroKeebs stays exactly that. Check spelling and capitalization carefully before you submit. Reddit’s pre-creation guidance also states that communities cannot be deleted, which makes the name and access settings more consequential than they first appear.
How to create a community on desktop
Reddit’s documented desktop path is as follows:
- Sign in at Reddit.com and look for Create Community in the left sidebar.
- Enter the community name. Remember that it is permanent once created.
- Enter a description that tells visitors what the space is for.
- Choose up to three topics so the community can be categorized.
- Select the community type (public, restricted, or private; see the comparison below).
- If the content calls for it, set the Mature (18+) option.
- Create the community.
How to create a community in the mobile app
The mobile flow follows the same logic with different navigation:
#1 Best Overall
- The 2024 ERG guide helps satisfy 49 CFR 172.602 DOT requirement. This requirement states that hazmat shipments be accompanied by emergency response info.
- Pocketbook aids in emergency preparedness, planning, and training with ERGs numerically indexed and color-coded to help emergency responders find vital information fast.
- 2024 Updates: The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) released a comprehensive summary of updates. Most significantly a QR code on the back cover that provides access to critical incident reporting information.
- Other changes for 2024 have been made to continue to provide the most accurate emergency response information to help all front-line persons and all first responders stay safe during transportation emergencies.
- Specifications: 4" x 5 1/2" Pocketbook Size, English, Spiralbound. Copyright 2024.
- Open the Reddit app and open the community drawer.
- Choose Start a Community.
- Enter the name and description, then choose up to three topics.
- Select the community type and set the Mature (18+) option if it applies.
- Create the community.
If a step is labeled differently on your screen, look for the same action: name, description, topics, type, and creation. The required information stays the same even when the layout changes.
Choose the right access type
Community type determines who can see the space and who can take part in it. Reddit Help describes three settings:
Rank #2
| Community type | Who can see it | Who can post or comment | Moderator control over participation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public | Anyone can view it | Broad participation; this is the most open choice | Controlled through community rules and moderation, not through approval lists |
| Restricted | Visible to users | Moderators can limit who posts and/or comments | Moderators decide which users may post or comment while the community stays visible |
| Private | Limited to approved members | Limited to approved members | Moderators approve who can view and participate |
Reddit’s help page also describes Premium-only communities on old Reddit. Availability depends on your interface and account, so confirm whether this option appears for you before relying on it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSet discovery options deliberately
Discovery is a separate decision from access. Reddit provides settings that determine whether a community can appear in feeds and recommendations. A community meant to stay small or focused may prefer limited exposure. A community that wants new members may opt into broader discovery. Reddit does not promise that either choice produces a particular amount of growth, and this guide does not either.
Rank #3
Plan your first moderation steps
Creating the community makes you its top moderator. Reddit Help’s moderator guidance states: “When you create a community, you automatically become the top moderator of that community.” The page attributes this to Reddit Help and does not name an individual speaker.
Once the community exists, handle the following before inviting people:
Rank #4
- Childrens Learn to Read Books Lot 60 - First Grade Set + Reading Strategies NEW
- 60 stapled booklets total. 15 titles each in levels A, B, C, and D
- Each 8-page reader is black and white as designed by a reading specialist to attract attention to the print
- Measures 4 1/2" by 5 1/2"
- This series of books is a Teachers' Choice award winning item as voted by Learning Magazine!
- Write clear community rules. Reddit-wide rules still apply, so community rules should add context for your specific topic rather than repeat or contradict them.
- Refine the description. Visitors should understand the purpose within seconds of landing on the page.
- Confirm the 18+ setting. Set it at creation if the content calls for it, and recheck it if the community’s focus changes.
- Plan who will moderate. Decide who else will help, and how you will handle spam and off-topic posts, before the community grows.
What may have changed since these guides were written
Reddit’s creation instructions were updated October 5, 2026, and its settings guidance was updated August 7, 2026. Feature names, the availability of community types, and the menu paths can change without notice. If you read this guide much later than its publication date, compare each step with Reddit Help before you rely on it.
