A slide switch changes a circuit when you push its actuator along a track. The slider moves internal conductive contacts, which either open a connection, close one, or redirect a shared connection to a different terminal. Many slide switches are maintained-contact devices, so they stay in the selected position until someone moves them again. The pole-and-throw label tells you how the circuit is routed. It does not tell you how much load the switch can carry, and a switch that fits the board is not automatically suitable for the load it will drive.

What a slide switch does inside the circuit

A slide switch is a manually operated, mechanical control. The user moves a linear actuator, and that motion shifts a contact mechanism from one position to another. Depending on the design, the switch can interrupt a single path or redirect a common connection between two or more contacts. Because the actuator moves in a straight line rather than rocking or clicking through a toggle arc, slide switches are often chosen where a panel or board layout benefits from a flat, sideways travel.

Maintained-contact behavior

The defining behavior of most slide switches is that they are maintained-contact. TE Connectivity describes the device this way: “A slide switch is a maintained-contact switch in which the switch stays in one state until it’s actuated into a new state, where it remains until it’s actuated again.” The company is the source of that description; the sentence is not attributed to a named individual. In practice, this means the circuit keeps its selected state after the finger leaves the actuator. That is the opposite of a momentary push-button, which returns to its resting state on release.

Maintained behavior matters for circuit design. A power switch, a mode selector, or a signal-path chooser can rely on the slider position to represent the state of the circuit at any moment, without a microcontroller or latch having to remember it. Manufacturers also offer self-returning or momentary-action variants in some product families, so the behavior must be confirmed for the exact part rather than assumed from the word “slide.”

Reading the circuit diagram and terminal numbering

Slide switches from different manufacturers do not share a common pin layout. Two parts with the same pole-and-throw label can place their terminals differently, and the same letter-number code can mean different terminal assignments across product series. Before soldering, take the terminal numbering and the schematic symbol from the datasheet for the exact model, then trace which terminal connects to which in each slider position. Doing this on paper before the board is fabricated avoids the most common error in slide-switch wiring, which is a reversed or swapped connection that looks correct on the front panel.

Reading pole and throw labels

The pole-and-throw designation is a shorthand for the switch’s circuit function. A pole is an independently switched circuit path. A throw is one of the contact destinations that a pole can connect to. The number of poles tells you how many separate paths the switch controls. The number of throws tells you how many destinations each path can reach.

Designation Poles Throws per pole What the switch does
SPST (single-pole, single-throw) 1 1 Opens or closes one path. This is the simplest on/off arrangement.
SPDT (single-pole, double-throw) 1 2 Connects a common terminal to either of two destinations, selecting between two paths.
DPST (double-pole, single-throw) 2 1 Opens or closes two separate paths together.
DPDT (double-pole, double-throw) 2 2 Switches two independent paths, each of which can go to either of two destinations.

These labels describe circuit function only. An SPDT switch and a DPDT switch can have identical current ratings, and a DPDT switch is not more capable simply because it has more contacts. Pole-and-throw counts answer “how is the circuit routed?” The rating, contact material, and insulation answer “what load can it safely handle?”

Where slide switches are used

Slide switches appear in electronic devices and small hobby or prototype projects, typically to control current flow or to choose between operating modes or signal paths. Common roles include on/off control of a small board or device, selection between two inputs or outputs, and switching between two operating modes such as a test setting and a normal setting. The same physical part can serve several of these roles depending on how its poles and throws are wired.

Slide switches should not be read as general-purpose mains or motor switches. Whether a particular slide switch is suitable for an AC mains circuit, an inductive motor load, or a lamp load depends on the exact rating for that load type and on applicable electrical safety requirements for the installation. Those checks belong to the specific part’s datasheet and to the standards that govern the end product, not to the switch’s general appearance or to the word “slide.”

How to choose a slide switch

The following sequence works from the circuit outward. Each step names a question the datasheet must answer before the part is accepted for the design.

1. Confirm the circuit function

Decide whether the design needs simple on/off control, selection between two paths, or several independently switched paths. Then choose the pole-and-throw type to match the circuit diagram. Count the number of positions the switch must offer, because some slide switches have two positions and others have three. If the circuit needs a selection among three or more destinations, a standard two-position slide switch is not the right tool.

2. Check the electrical rating for the actual load

Read the rated voltage and current for the exact model, and make sure the rating matches the real load type. A DC rating and an AC rating are separate figures, and they are not interchangeable. A rating published for one series or family cannot be applied to a different switch, even one that looks similar. The published values in the next section show how much these ratings differ between families.

3. Verify the contact behavior

Confirm whether the part is maintained-contact, momentary, or self-returning, and check whether the switching timing matters for the circuit. Manufacturers list different product options and characteristics, so the behavior must be verified against the model’s specification rather than inferred from the product category.

  • Micro Mini Slide Switches are mainly used for power control and function switching of some small electronic devices, such as for Arduino, breadboards, electronic circuits, circuit boards, microphones, and DIY electronic projects

4. Match the mounting and termination

Choose the termination style that suits the assembly, such as PCB through-hole, surface-mount, panel-mount, solder lug, or wire termination. Then check the actuator orientation, height, pitch, travel distance, and package dimensions against the enclosure and the board layout. A switch that fits the footprint can still sit too high for a panel cut-out or leave the actuator out of reach of the user.

5. Review the environment and durability data

If the device will be exposed to dust, moisture, or handling stress, check the sealing and ingress-protection information on the chosen part. The DigiKey technical guide on switches lists IP rating among the parameters to consider, but a protection claim applies only to the specific part and its published conditions, so it must be read from that part’s own documentation. Also review contact material and the published mechanical and electrical life figures when the device will be operated frequently or under load.

Nidec family Published electrical rating Source and date
CUS family 4 VDC, 300 mA Nidec Components product listing; publication year not stated
8SS family 125 VAC, 6 A; 30 VDC, 4 A Nidec Components product listing; publication year not stated

Each figure applies only to the family it belongs to, and only under the condition stated beside it. The 8SS family lists separate AC and DC ratings, and the two should be read independently rather than combined. The CUS family figure is a low-voltage DC rating and says nothing about whether the family could handle mains voltage. These are product specifications, not a general standard for slide switches. Confirm the exact part number and its current datasheet before relying on either set of values.

Common selection mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Choosing by footprint alone. A part that fits the board or panel cut-out may have a different terminal layout or a lower current rating than the design needs. Check the rating and the pinout before the footprint.
  • Treating pole-and-throw as a power rating. A DPDT switch is not automatically rated for more current than an SPDT switch. Use the pole-and-throw label for routing and the rating table for load.
  • Assuming the contact behavior. A switch that stays in position for a power circuit will behave differently from a self-returning actuator in a control circuit. Confirm the behavior in the datasheet.
  • Carrying a rating across series. A rating published for one family cannot be used for another switch from the same manufacturer, let alone a different one.
  • Ignoring the actuator position. A slider that sits too high or travels into a cover can stop fully moving, leaving the contacts partly engaged or the state unclear to the user.

Checks to run after installation

Once the switch is mounted and wired, test each slider position with the circuit de-energized first. Use a multimeter in continuity mode to confirm that each position connects the intended terminals and no others. Then energize the circuit at a load that is within the part’s rating, and confirm that the switch holds its state after the actuator is released. If the switch changes state on its own, becomes warm during operation, or fails to make a clean connection in one position, remove power, recheck the load against the rated figures, and inspect the mounting and actuator clearance before replacing the part.

These steps do not replace the manufacturer’s specifications. They confirm that the switch was installed correctly and is working within the limits the datasheet defines.
