To turn off speaker during a call, tap Audio in the call controls and choose the iPhone’s receiver (the handset option, labeled iPhone or similar) instead of Speaker. The call stays connected; only the route changes. If your iPhone keeps switching to speaker on its own, the fix is a different setting, covered below.
Turn off speaker during an active call
Apple’s support guidance for calls describes the change this way: “When you’re on a phone call on iPhone, you can switch the audio to the speaker or a Bluetooth® device.” The same control lets you move the audio back to the handset.

- While the call is active, bring the call screen into view. If you have left the Phone app, return to the call by tapping the green call indicator at the top of the screen.
- Tap Audio.
- Select the iPhone receiver option rather than Speaker. The exact label can vary with the iOS version and the devices connected to your iPhone.
- Hold the phone to your ear and confirm the voice now comes from the earpiece. The call continues without interruption.
Mute is not the same control. Mute stops your microphone so the other person cannot hear you, but it does not change where you hear the call. If the problem is that you are hearing the call through speaker, use Audio.

Choose the right audio destination
The Audio menu can list more than the built-in speaker and receiver. Pick the destination that matches where you are and what you are using.

| Destination | Best for | How to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone (receiver) | Private calls held to the ear | Tap Audio, then select the iPhone option |
| Speaker | Hands-free use, or several people listening | Tap Audio, then select Speaker |
| Bluetooth device | Headphones, car systems, or a Bluetooth headset | Pair the device first, then select it in the Audio menu during the call |
| Hearing device | Compatible hearing aids or hearing accessories | Select it in the Audio menu when it is connected |
A Bluetooth headset or hearing device is an option, not a requirement. You can switch off speaker using the built-in receiver alone.
Stop calls from going to speaker automatically
If you change the route on every call, set a preferred destination instead. Apple’s Accessibility settings control where call audio is directed by default.

If you use VoiceOver
VoiceOver users may find that the phone switches to speaker during a call even after a route is set. Check Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver > Audio > Auto-select Speaker in Call. Apple describes this option as switching to speaker during a call when you are not holding the iPhone to your ear. Turning it off stops that automatic switch.

Things to check when the change does not stick
- Confirm you selected the receiver in the Audio menu during the call, not just muted the microphone.
- Check whether a Bluetooth or hearing device is connected. A connected device may take the audio route.
- Check Call Audio Routing for a default that overrides what you chose earlier.
- If you use VoiceOver, check the Auto-select Speaker in Call setting.
Menu names and available options can differ between iOS versions and between iPhone models with different accessory support. Apple’s current iOS user guide, which covers iOS 27, uses the labels described here. If your screen shows different wording, look for the same Audio control and the same Accessibility path.
