When Aakash checked the ChatGPT desktop app on Linux, he found no built-in update checker. He had missed a newly launched model for several days because the app on his machine was out of date. In his DEV post of September 27, 2026, he describes how he traced the problem and then built an unofficial notifier. The official way to update the Linux app is still your distribution’s package manager. The notifier adds reminders and a guided install flow on top of that route.
What went wrong
Aakash moved from Windows to Linux and preferred a desktop window to the command line. When a new model appeared, he could not find it in the app. He eventually learned that the Linux app had to be updated to receive it. Nothing in the app prompted him to check, so he went several days without the update.
This is one person’s account of a single gap. It is not a controlled comparison between the Windows and Linux versions of the app, and it does not show how often other users run into the same problem.

OpenAI’s Linux documentation describes the desktop app as a preview. It supports the distributions below on x64 and ARM64. Later updates are installed through the package manager that your distribution uses, not through the app itself.

Two points matter before you run any of these commands. The Arch command upgrades every installed package, not only the ChatGPT app. Also, the app must have been installed from OpenAI’s package repository for these updates to reach it.
Preview limits to know about
OpenAI’s documentation lists platform-specific gaps. Computer Use is not yet available in the Linux preview. Native Wayland support is experimental, and some window behavior and keyboard shortcuts may be incomplete. These limits affect what the app can do, not whether it gets updated, but they are worth checking if you rely on those features.

The unofficial update notifier
The chatgpt-update-notifier project was built by Aakash. Its README describes it as unofficial and says it is not made or endorsed by OpenAI. Everything below comes from the project documentation. We have not independently verified how the tool behaves on any system.

What the notifier does
- It checks OpenAI’s signed package repository for new versions and notifies you when one is available.
- When you press the install button, it shows a visible install flow. You can configure one-click behavior after that button press.
- It keeps rollback copies. The default is to retain the latest three valid rollback copies.
The README states the key safeguard directly: “It never installs an update without your confirmation.”

Requirements
- A supported distribution and architecture: Ubuntu 24.04 or 26.04, Debian 13, Fedora 43 or 44, or current Arch Linux, on x64 or ARM64.
- The ChatGPT app installed from its official repository. The notifier will not work as described otherwise.
- A systemd user session.
- Desktop notifications enabled for your session.
Installing it safely
- Follow the install steps in the project README and run the installer as a normal user. Do not use
sudo. - Read each prompt before accepting it. The README says the installer asks before making changes.
- On Arch, be aware that installing a missing tool can trigger a full system upgrade. Decide whether you want that before continuing.
Manual checks compared with the notifier

Which approach fits you
- If you want only what OpenAI documents, run your distribution’s update command on a schedule you will keep.
- If you tend to forget checks, as Aakash did, a notifier adds reminders. Verify the prerequisites above first.
- If your distribution or architecture is outside the lists above, neither approach is documented for your setup.
Bottom line
The Linux app’s gap is that it does not tell you when it is outdated. OpenAI’s documented fix is the package manager on a supported distribution. Aakash’s notifier is a useful, unofficial add-on that alerts you and keeps rollback copies. Confirm the prerequisites and read its install prompts before you rely on it.
