A Kahoot! game saves only as a draft when it is not yet complete or when it was never saved through the creator’s Save step. Kahoot! states that drafts cannot be played, assigned, or shared until they are saved as a complete kahoot. The fix is usually to find the missing element or premium feature that blocks the save, resolve it, and click Save again.
What causes a kahoot to stay in draft
Kahoot! says a kahoot will only save as a draft under specific conditions. In its official save guide, the reasons are: the creator was closed without saving, the user chose Keep as a draft or Save to drafts, a required element is missing, or the game uses a premium feature that the current plan does not include. In practice, the two causes that most often block a complete save are missing required content and starred features. (Kahoot! save guide)
Missing required content
A game can remain a draft if it lacks a title, or if a question in the Test knowledge category has no correct answer marked. Kahoot!’s web creator guide confirms that relevant quiz questions need at least one correct answer before the game can be saved as complete. (Kahoot! make-a-kahoot guide)
Premium features outside your plan
Features marked with a turquoise star require a paid subscription. If your current plan does not include one, the game cannot be saved as complete while that feature remains in a question or theme. You have two options: remove the feature, or upgrade to a plan that includes it. The exact list of starred features is shown in the creator itself, so check there rather than relying on a list from memory, since Kahoot! changes its plan contents over time.

The game was never saved with the Save button
A newly created kahoot that was closed without clicking Save is stored automatically as a draft. Kahoot! says these drafts appear in the Library’s Drafts tab, so they are recoverable without rebuilding the game.
How to save a stuck draft as a complete kahoot
- Go to Library and open the Drafts tab.
- Find the kahoot and choose Edit. On a small screen or at higher browser zoom, this may appear as a pencil icon.
- Click Save in the upper-right corner of the creator.
- Read the message that appears. If a dialog lists missing elements, choose Fix and complete each item, such as adding a title or marking a correct answer.
- If the message names a premium feature, remove that feature from the affected question or theme, or upgrade your subscription if you want to keep it.
- Click Save again. Kahoot! states that the game is saved as a complete version when no further prompt appears.

Draft versus unsaved changes
Kahoot! uses two labels that are easy to confuse. They describe different states of the same game.

Kahoot! also autosaves edits and shows saving status beside the kahoot title in the top navigation bar. That indicator confirms autosaving only. It does not mean the game has been converted from a draft into a complete kahoot, so a game can show autosave activity and still be a draft.

Saving from the mobile app
In the mobile app, Save stores your edits. If the checklist is incomplete, however, the game is stored as a draft, and drafts cannot be played or shared. Kahoot!’s mobile editing guide points users to its web editing instructions for some steps, so menu names and layout may differ between the app and the web creator. (Kahoot! mobile app editing guide) If a save fails on mobile, try the web creator, where the save dialog is more likely to name the specific missing item.

If the title is filled in, every Test knowledge question has a correct answer, and no starred feature is in use, the save dialog is the most reliable diagnostic. Kahoot! does not publish a universal explanation for every account, so the exact reason for a particular game depends on its content, your plan, and the platform you used to edit it. Read the message shown when you click Save, because it identifies the specific element or feature that blocks the save.

- No prompt appears, but the game is still a draft: click Save again in the web creator and check the Drafts tab.
- A prompt names a feature you did not add: check recently imported questions or themes, since they may carry premium elements.
- The draft disappeared: check the missing-kahoot guide before recreating the game.
The save guide was last updated September 17, 2026, so later interface changes may alter button labels. The underlying rules (complete content, plan-dependent features, and the Drafts tab) are the parts to rely on.
