NYT Strands resets at midnight in your local time zone. When your local date changes, the previous day’s board is replaced by a new daily puzzle. Because the reset follows each player’s clock rather than one shared moment, friends in different regions can be playing different puzzles at the same time.
How the reset timing works
The daily Strands puzzle changes at 12:00 AM on your device, so there is no single worldwide release time to plan around. A recent TechRadar report from October 2026 describes the new puzzle appearing at midnight for each player’s time zone, and a Strands-focused explainer describes the same thing from the device side: when the device clock reaches 12:00 AM, the previous board is replaced.
Neither source quotes an official New York Times statement on timing. The schedule reported here is what current secondary coverage describes, not a published NYT support policy, so treat it as the reliable working answer rather than an official guarantee.

- Your local midnight decides your puzzle. If you live on the U.S. West Coast, your new board arrives later in the day, by Eastern clock time, than it does for a player on the East Coast. The same is true across any border.
- Players elsewhere may already be on tomorrow’s board. A friend who is several hours ahead of you may describe a puzzle you have not yet been able to open.
- Your device clock matters. Because the change follows the device clock, a wrong time or time zone setting on your phone, tablet, or computer can make the puzzle appear at a time you did not expect.
- Do not convert midnight to a fixed UTC time. The conversion depends on your time zone and whether daylight saving time is in effect, so a single UTC hour would be wrong for many players at certain times of year.
What these sources do not cover
The available reporting addresses only the daily reset. It does not establish how streaks, past puzzle archives, or account syncing behave when the date changes, or what happens if an update is delayed. If you need those details, check the Strands help material in the NYT Games app or on the NYT Games site rather than relying on the reset explainers.
If the new puzzle has not appeared
- Confirm the time shown on your device is correct and that your time zone is set automatically or to your current location.
- Compare the device time with your local midnight. If the local date has changed and the puzzle still shows yesterday’s board, close and reopen the game.
- If the board still does not update after a reopen, the problem is most likely a clock or time zone setting rather than a schedule difference, since the reset is tied to your device’s local date.
The Bottom Line
Strands resets at midnight in your local time zone, based on your device clock. Players in other regions may be on a different puzzle at the same moment, and the schedule is reported by secondary coverage rather than an official NYT statement.
