A Raspberry Pi can work as a remote endpoint for some tasks you would otherwise do on a Windows PC, but it does not beat Windows across the board. Whether it is the better choice depends on whether you need a full graphical desktop or only a terminal, whether you are connecting over your local network or the internet, and what the complete setup costs. Raspberry Pi’s own documentation supports the first two comparisons. The $45 figure is the part you need to check yourself, because it is not tied to a specific model or a complete working kit.
What the $45 figure does and does not cover
Raspberry Pi’s documentation does not connect a $45 price to any particular board model, memory size, or bundle, and it does not list what a working remote-access setup costs in total. Treat $45 as a board-level starting point to verify with a current seller, not as the price of a ready-to-use machine. Before you compare it with a Windows computer, price each of the following for the exact configuration you plan to use:
- The Raspberry Pi board, with the model and RAM size you choose
- An official or otherwise suitable power supply
- Storage for the operating system, typically a microSD card or another drive the board supports
- A case and cooling, if you want them
- A display, keyboard, and mouse, only if you will also use the Pi locally during setup
- A reliable network connection, either Wi-Fi or Ethernet, for the Pi and your Windows PC
The three remote access routes Raspberry Pi documents
Raspberry Pi documents three ways to reach a Pi from another machine. They solve different problems, so the right one depends on the task rather than on the hardware.

Raspberry Pi Connect: browser access with no router changes
Connect is Raspberry Pi’s own browser-based service. Raspberry Pi’s product page lists individual access as free, although pricing can change, so confirm it on that page before you rely on it. The main practical advantage is that you do not have to work out the Pi’s IP address or open ports on your router for internet access; Raspberry Pi says Connect handles this configuration for you.

How the connection is secured
Raspberry Pi’s documentation says Connect uses WebRTC, and that traffic is DTLS-encrypted. If a direct connection between your browser and the Pi is not possible, the traffic may be relayed in encrypted form. In its May 2024 announcement, Raspberry Pi’s web development lead Paul Mucur described the mechanism this way: “When you use Raspberry Pi Connect from a web browser to connect to your Raspberry Pi device, we establish a secure peer-to-peer connection between the two using WebRTC: the same real-time communication technology that underpins the in-browser clients for Zoom, Slack, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet.” That is the vendor’s own explanation of its design, not an independent security audit.
The Wayland requirement
Connect’s screen sharing needs a Wayland display server. It does not work on Raspberry Pi OS Lite, which has no desktop, or on systems that run an X window server. If your Pi was set up with an X-based desktop, screen sharing through Connect will not be available, even though the remote shell may still work. Check which display server your Pi uses before you plan around screen sharing.

Setting up VNC for desktop access from Windows
If you need the Pi’s graphical desktop on a Windows PC and Connect’s requirements do not fit your Pi, VNC is the documented alternative. The steps below follow the structure Raspberry Pi describes; the exact menu names change between operating system releases, so follow the current Raspberry Pi documentation for the menu path on your version.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- On the Pi, turn on the VNC server through the Raspberry Pi configuration tool, and note that the Pi must be reachable on the network.
- Find the Pi’s hostname or IP address on your network.
- On your Windows PC, install a VNC client and enter the Pi’s hostname or IP address.
- When prompted, sign in with a valid account on the Pi.
- If the connection fails, confirm that both devices are on the same reachable network and that the credentials are correct.
VNC is only as reachable as your network. For access from outside your home or office, you will need a network path you have arranged yourself; Raspberry Pi’s VNC setup description does not cover that case, and Connect is the documented route designed to avoid it.

Terminal-only tasks: SSH or Connect’s remote shell
For administration, scripts, file transfers, or monitoring, you do not need a desktop at all. SSH provides terminal access, and Connect’s remote shell gives you the same kind of command-line session from a browser. This is where a Pi is most convincing as a remote endpoint, because you are not asking a small board to drive a graphical session.
Decision guide: which setup fits your task
- You only need a command line: use SSH, or Connect’s remote shell if you want browser access. A Pi is a reasonable fit at a low board cost.
- You need the Pi’s graphical desktop and it runs Wayland: Connect screen sharing is the simplest route, especially from outside your network.
- You need the Pi’s desktop but it runs Raspberry Pi OS Lite or an X-based desktop: use VNC on the local network, or change the display setup before relying on Connect screen sharing.
- You need Windows applications: a Pi will not run them. Remote access to a Pi gives you the Pi’s Linux environment, so a Windows PC is the better endpoint for Windows-only software.
- You are connecting from outside your local network: Connect’s browser route avoids the IP and firewall steps that VNC requires, but the total cost includes whatever connectivity you already pay for.
What has not been measured
No controlled head-to-head test of Raspberry Pi remote access against Windows remote access has been published by Raspberry Pi or an independent source that we could confirm. That means this article cannot say that either platform is faster, has lower latency, or is more reliable. The comparison that holds up is about task fit, setup burden, display compatibility, and cost, and each of those depends on your configuration.
