To create an Asana task automatically when a Jira issue is added, add the Jira Cloud app to the Asana project, authorize your Jira account, select the Jira project and issue type, and choose When a Jira issue is added → Create a new Asana task. The setup takes a few minutes, but the details that cause problems later are the plan you are on, which Jira fields actually sync, and how people are matched between the two systems. This guide covers each of them in the order you will need them.
What you need before you start
Asana’s setup guidance lists a few prerequisites. Confirm them before you open the project, because a missing one usually shows up as a configuration option you cannot select.
- A Jira Cloud account for the person doing the setup, with edit access to the Jira project you want to connect. Guests cannot configure this project setup.
- Access to the Asana project where the tasks should appear.
- An Asana plan that includes the integration. Plan availability is covered in its own section below.
- Permission to authorize the connection. The integration uses OAuth, so Jira is approved through a sign-in and consent step rather than by sharing a password.
Set up Jira-to-Asana task creation
Work through these steps in the Asana project itself. The labels below are the ones shown in Asana’s current setup guidance; the layout can shift slightly as Asana updates its interface, so match on the wording if a button has moved.
- Open the Asana project where you want new tasks to appear.
- Choose Customize → Apps → Add App, select Jira Cloud, and add it to the project.
- Authorize the Jira account when prompted.
- In the Jira Cloud app’s Data sync settings, select the Jira project and the issue type you want to sync, such as Bug or Story.
- Choose When a Jira issue is added → Create a new Asana task, then save the configuration.
After saving, create a test issue of the selected type in the Jira project. A new task should appear in the Asana project. If nothing appears, check the issue type first. The most common mismatch is a sync set to one issue type while the test issue is another.

Import existing Jira issues
The same Data sync settings can bring existing Jira issues into Asana as tasks. Select the Jira project and issue type, enable the option to import existing issues, and save. Expect the import to cover only the issues of the selected type, and expect the mapped fields described below to be the only data that comes across.
Choose the sync direction
Turning on Jira-to-Asana task creation does not by itself make changes in Asana flow back to Jira. Two-way behaviour is a separate choice in the same settings, so decide which direction your team needs before you configure it.
- Jira to Asana only: new Jira issues create Asana tasks. Changes made in Asana stay in Asana.
- Two-way sync: the update direction is configured separately. Plan availability applies; see the table below.
- Comments: comment syncing can be configured as well, so decide whether discussion should appear in both systems.
Plan availability
Asana’s Help Center lists the Jira Cloud integration on Starter, Advanced, Enterprise, and Enterprise+, along with the legacy Premium, Business, and Legacy Enterprise plans. Two-way Jira Cloud data sync is listed for Advanced, Enterprise, Enterprise+, and the legacy Business and Legacy Enterprise plans. Asana’s product page describes limited functionality for legacy Premium customers.

Asana’s help pages do not show publication dates, and plan names have changed more than once. Check the plan shown under your organization’s billing or admin settings before you promise two-way sync to a team.
Which fields sync
The integration does not copy every Jira field. It maps a defined set, and it is important to know that set before you tell a team what will appear in Asana.

Custom fields
Asana supports custom fields of the Date, People, Number, Single-select, and Multi-select types, alongside selected Jira custom-field types. Asana’s field list shows which Jira types pair with each, so check it against your own Jira configuration before you promise a specific custom field.

Fields that do not sync
Asana’s documentation lists these Jira fields as unsupported:
- Components
- Versions
- Labels
- Epic Link and Epic Name
- Sprint from Jira Software boards
- Story Points and estimation fields
- Time Tracking
- Rank and Order
- Linked Issues
- Watchers and Voters
- Custom fields supplied by Marketplace apps
Timestamp and Dependent drop-down fields are unsupported in either direction. Some fields, including URL, are documented as Jira-to-Asana only. Sprint appears both as a Jira-to-Asana field in one part of the documentation and as an unsupported Jira Software board field in another, so confirm its behaviour in the current field list before relying on it.
If a team depends on labels, components, or sprints for triage, that gap is the main reason to consider a third-party tool, covered below.

How people are matched
User fields such as Assignee are matched by the email address on each person’s Jira and Asana accounts. If an address on one side has no matching account on the other, the value can be dropped, and the Asana task’s assignee may be blank. Asana also notes that Jira’s email visibility settings may need adjusting for matching to work.
To check matching, compare the email address on the Jira profile with the one on the Asana profile for a few people who regularly receive issues. A mismatch in capitalization is not the usual cause; the address itself has to match.

Jira data synced into Asana becomes part of Asana’s work graph. Anyone who can see the Asana task or project can see the synced content, under Asana’s standard visibility and edit rules. Actions that write back to Jira are governed by Jira’s permissions. Before you connect a project with sensitive issues, decide which Asana members should see that project, and check that the Jira issue type you select contains nothing that should not be visible there.

Troubleshooting
- No task appears after creating a Jira issue. Confirm the issue type in the Data sync settings matches the new issue, and that the sync is saved with the trigger set to When a Jira issue is added.
- Assignee is blank. Check that both accounts use the same email address and that Jira’s email visibility permits matching.
- A field is missing in Asana. Look for it in the unsupported list above. Components, labels, and sprints are common examples.
- Changes in Asana do not reach Jira. Two-way sync is configured separately and depends on your plan.
- The Jira Cloud option is not available. Your plan may not include the integration, or your account may lack the required Jira permissions.
Alternatives when the native integration falls short
Asana’s integrations listing describes two third-party routes that teams use when the native integration does not match their workflow.
- Unito: presented as a two-way sync option. Its listing covers titles, descriptions, state, comments, assignees, labels or tags, due dates, attachments, links, and selected custom fields. This is the route to compare if labels or attachments matter to your team.
- Zapier: presented as a way to connect Jira and Asana and set up an automation. Automations built this way run on their own triggers, so test them against your real issue types.
Asana’s listing confirms that these tools exist and what they map. It does not confirm current pricing, plan requirements, or feature availability, so check those directly with each vendor before choosing one.
No physical hardware or accessory is needed for this setup. Everything is configured inside your Jira and Asana accounts.
