Anthropic’s OSS Scanner is a free, opt-in service for eligible open-source projects. It periodically uses Anthropic models to look for vulnerabilities and sends reports directly to maintainers—without human review or triage first. That can get findings to a project sooner, but maintainers must be ready to assess whether each report is valid, duplicated, correctly rated, and relevant to their threat model.
What Anthropic’s OSS Scanner does
Announced on October 8, 2026, OSS Scanner is part of Anthropic’s work to find security issues in open-source software. Accepted projects receive periodic model-generated reports at no cost. A report may include an explanation of a suspected vulnerability, a self-contained reproducer or proof of concept, an estimate of when the issue was introduced, and a candidate patch when one is available. Anthropic says it uses multiple harnesses and techniques, including experimental approaches that use more tokens. Anthropic’s launch announcement and service documentation describe the program.
The service is an optional fast track alongside Anthropic’s coordinated vulnerability disclosure (CVD) process. In the standard CVD route, people review findings before disclosure. OSS Scanner sends its reports to maintainers as model output, so projects take on the initial review and triage themselves.
Who can apply and how enrollment works
OSS Scanner is not a public signup for every repository. Core maintainers of projects Anthropic considers important to infrastructure and user security can apply. Anthropic assesses eligibility case by case, using criteria it says are similar to OSS-Fuzz, and manually validates that the applicant is a core maintainer.

- Used Book in Good Condition
- Open a pull request. Submit it to Anthropic’s
oss-scannerrepository. - Add a project configuration. Create
projects/<project>/project.yamlwith the repository and homepage, contact addresses, and a threat model. The configuration can also specify a severity rubric and preferences for proof-of-concept and patch formatting. - Provide the scan environment. Include a Dockerfile for the project’s scan environment. Anthropic says it builds that image with network access, then runs the agent without internet access.
- Wait for eligibility review. Anthropic reviews applications and checks that the applicant is a core maintainer; submitting a pull request does not itself guarantee acceptance.
The service documentation also explains how to configure encrypted report email using a GPG public key. That configuration has a limitation on adding CC recipients. A project can pause or leave by changing or removing its configuration through a pull request; after opting out, it returns to the standard CVD route.
Are findings reviewed by a human?
No. Anthropic says OSS Scanner reports are fully model-generated and are not human-reviewed before delivery. The speed advantage comes with a corresponding responsibility: maintainers need to validate the finding, assess its severity and relevance, check for duplicates, and decide what action to take. Anthropic warns that reports can be wrong or misrated; maintainers have also reported inflated severity and cases where the model misunderstood a project’s threat model.

Projects that cannot absorb unreviewed reports can continue to use Anthropic’s human-reviewed CVD process. The two routes serve different needs: OSS Scanner prioritizes faster delivery of raw findings to participating projects, while CVD retains human review before disclosure.
| Factor | OSS Scanner | Standard CVD route |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free for accepted open-source projects, according to Anthropic | Not stated in Anthropic’s cited program materials |
| Who can use it | Eligible projects; core-maintainer application and case-by-case review | Available through Anthropic’s existing coordinated disclosure process |
| Human review before delivery | No; reports are model-generated | Yes; findings are human-reviewed before disclosure |
| Maintainer triage | Maintainers need capacity to assess unreviewed reports | Anthropic performs human review before disclosure |
| Reports | May include an explanation, reproducer or proof of concept, introduction bisection when possible, and candidate patch when available | Not stated in the cited program materials |
| Pause or opt out | Yes; change or remove project configuration through a pull request | Not stated in the cited program materials |
What Anthropic’s accuracy figures do—and do not—show
Anthropic reports that penetration testers assessed 97 critical- and high-severity findings from the early scanner across 48 projects. Of those, 85 met Anthropic’s bar for its CVD process. Of the remaining 12, Anthropic classified 11 as real but duplicate or overlapping findings and one as invalid. This is a selected early sample, not a guarantee that future reports will be correct or that every report will be equally useful.

- WIRELESS AND WIRED MODES - The Basecent barcode reader support cordless scanning with a 2.4G mini USB receiver, which allow you to scan bar code in every corner of your library and warehouse. Also, it can scan barcodes with an USB cable which will charge the scanner gun at the same time. Just plug the USB receiver or cable and scan, do not need driver.
- QUICK FOR ALL BARCODES - The maximum scanning speed of this laser scanner is 300 scans per second. This quick scanner can read UPC, ISBN, EAN and almost all the bar code labels in the world.
- LONG DISTANCE TRANSMISSION - With the wireless mode, the transmission distance between the scanner and the USB receiver are 60 to 100 meters(196.8ft) indoors, and up to 400 meters(1312.3ft) in open air.
- INSTANT UPLOAD & STORAGE MODE – When scanning barcode labels, the data will be transferred instantly to the receiver if the scanner is in the wireless transmission range, and the data can be stored if the scanner is out of the wireless transmission range.
- COMPATIBLE WITH MOST SYSTEMS – The Basecent barcode scanner is compatible with most of the systems and devices, including systems like Windows(Including Win XP to Win10, Win11), Mac osx, Linux (including Google Chrome OS, not all linux systems), ios, Android, and including devices like desktop computer, laptops, servers, tablets which have USB interface.
Anthropic separately says it expects a true-positive rate above 90%. That is a company expectation, not the result of the 97-finding validation exercise. The company also reports that it discovered more than 29,000 candidate vulnerabilities over six months, manually reviewed or triaged approximately 6,000, and sent nearly 5,000 reports directly to maintainers who requested all findings, including unverified ones. These figures describe Anthropic’s workload and disclosure activity; they are not an independent accuracy measure.
For additional context, Anthropic says language models on CyberGym went from finding under 20% of vulnerabilities at the beginning of the previous year to over 85% in 2026. That is Anthropic’s characterization of a benchmark result, not a field-accuracy measurement for OSS Scanner.

Some maintainers have described useful results: PostgreSQL’s Noah Misch said several reports included fixes the project could use nearly as-is, while wolfSSL’s Todd Ouska said 72 of 74 reports it received were valid and five became CVEs. These are project-specific experiences, not a forecast of another project’s results. Anthropic’s announcement includes these accounts and the company’s reported figures.

OSS Scanner is not Claude Security
OSS Scanner is a free service for accepted open-source projects, with model-generated reports delivered without human review. Claude Security is a separate commercial code-scanning and patching product aimed at enterprise systems. Anthropic describes Claude Security as using a verification pipeline and requiring human approval for suggested fixes. The products have different audiences and review workflows; one is not simply another name for the other. See Anthropic’s Claude Security announcement for its product description.

OSS Scanner is also part of Anthropic’s broader Cyber Mission. Separately, Anthropic describes a Critical Infrastructure Defense Program for providers serving operational technology and critical infrastructure, and says maintainers can apply to Claude for Open Source for free Claude Max subscriptions or to its Cyber Verification Program for expanded defensive capabilities. Those are distinct programs, subject to qualification, rather than features required to use OSS Scanner. Anthropic’s Cyber Mission announcement describes them.
