An external hard disk is a hard disk drive (HDD) housed in its own enclosure outside the computer, connected through an interface such as USB, and storing data magnetically on spinning platters. The everyday phrase “external hard drive” is looser: sellers also use it for flash-based external SSDs, so the storage technology is the detail that matters most when you compare products.
What the term means
The phrase combines two ideas, and each one answers a different question.
- “External” describes location and connection. The drive sits outside the computer and attaches to it through a port. Dell’s support documentation describes external drives as commonly connecting over USB. Other external products use other interfaces, so USB is the common case rather than a rule.
- “Hard disk” describes the storage mechanism. A hard disk drive writes and reads data magnetically on rotating platters, using a movable read/write head to reach the data.
- “Drive” is a generic word. An external SSD also gets called an external drive. An SSD stores data in flash memory with no moving parts, so the word “external” alone does not tell you whether a product is mechanical or solid-state.
In careful writing, “external HDD” means a mechanical hard disk drive in an external enclosure, and “external drive” or “external storage” covers both HDDs and SSDs.

Inside the drive, a mechanical HDD stores information as magnetic patterns on one or more platters. The platters spin while the head moves across them to access specific data. An SSD, by contrast, keeps data in flash memory chips and has neither platters nor heads.

The external enclosure supplies the housing and the connector that links the drive to the host computer. Three things vary by product:
- Interface. USB is the most common external connection, but the supported interface depends on the model and the ports on your computer.
- Power. SanDisk states that some portable models can be bus-powered, meaning they draw power through the USB connection. Larger external drives may instead use a separate power source. Check the specific product rather than assuming either arrangement.
- Performance. Speed depends on both the drive technology and the connection. Seagate’s support article explains that a transfer can be limited by the slower component in the chain, so an advertised speed is not guaranteed on every computer or cable.

- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required

| Factor | External HDD | External SSD |
|---|---|---|
| Storage method | Magnetic platters with a moving read/write head (Dell support) | Flash memory with no moving parts (Dell support) |
| Typical reason to choose it | Large capacity for the money; SanDisk describes portable HDDs as magnetic disk-based | Speed, compact size, and a solid-state design; SanDisk describes portable SSDs as flash-based |
| Connection | Commonly USB; interface varies by model | Commonly USB or another supported external interface; verify host compatibility |
| Power | Varies by model; not stated for every product in the sources | Some portable models are USB bus-powered (SanDisk) |
| Transfer speed | Limited by the slower part of the chain (Seagate) | Limited by the slower part of the chain (Seagate); verify the advertised figure for your setup |
No single type wins. The better choice depends on whether capacity per dollar or transfer speed and size matter more for your workload.
What external hard disks are used for
Dell’s support material identifies three common uses: adding storage space, holding backup copies, and moving files between computers. Those uses explain why the category is so widespread.

- Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Extra capacity. An external drive can hold a photo, video, or music library that would not fit on a laptop’s internal drive.
- Backup copies. A drive can store a second copy of files. The sources establish this use, but they do not claim that an external drive protects against every cause of data loss. A backup strategy usually also needs a second copy kept elsewhere and a regular schedule for updating it.
- Transporting files. A drive can carry data between machines when a network or cloud transfer is impractical.
Checks before you connect or buy one
- Confirm the drive type on the product page or label: HDD or SSD.
- Match the drive’s interface to a port on your computer, and carry an adapter or cable if the ports differ.
- Check whether the drive is bus-powered or needs its own power adapter.
- Judge capacity and speed against the actual task, not the headline number alone.
Once you know the storage technology, the interface, and the power arrangement, the term “external hard disk” has a precise meaning for the product you are looking at.
