To keep a phone working on a wet, cold hike, keep it inside a closed waterproof pouch in an inner pocket, close to your body, and treat it as something that can lose battery quickly and may not charge while cold or wet. A pouch blocks rain but does not insulate, so the cold protection comes from where you carry the phone, not from the pouch.
Protect the device from rain first
Rain and splash are the most common ways a phone gets damaged on a trail, and the fix is physical: a barrier that stays closed. Carry the phone in an inner jacket pocket or a waterproof pouch, and check that the closure is fully sealed before you put the pack on.
Choose a protection level that matches the weather
Three common options differ in how much water they stop and how easily you can use the device. The table below compares them for a single phone or a few small devices.
| Option | Protection level | Access while moving | Best use | Main limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zip-seal food bag | Light rain and splashes; REI describes it as a low-cost layer | Easy to open and close | Short walks in drizzle or as a backup | Not guaranteed waterproof; closure quality varies |
| Purpose-made waterproof phone pouch or case | Designed for outdoor rain; REI discusses waterproof soft cases for outdoor use | Usually good, depending on the design | Regular rain exposure, one phone | Fit, closure method, and protection claims vary by product; check the manufacturer’s stated conditions |
| Small dry bag | Designed to keep contents dry when the closure is rolled and sealed correctly | Slower; usually stored in a pack | Several devices (phone, headlamp, power bank) in one bag | Protection depends on closing it correctly every time; not stated for a specific bag without the manufacturer’s rating |
Samsung Support India advises using a waterproof pouch when traveling in rainy weather, and that advice applies to hiking in the same conditions. Whatever you choose, do not treat a food bag as a waterproof seal for a heavy downpour or for a stream crossing.

Read an IP rating before you trust it
An IP rating describes protection under specific test conditions, not protection in every situation. The digits in a rating such as IPX7 identify defined categories, and the manufacturer’s stated conditions determine what the device has actually been tested for. Do not assume that one model’s rating applies to another model, and do not assume protection is permanent after drops, cracks, worn seals, or port covers that are left open.
The European Union consolidated regulation dated 2026 lists the water categories used in IP rating definitions. For the levels most relevant to a hike:

| Water level (last digit) | Category in the EU table | What it means for a hiker |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | Splashing | Protection against splashes from any direction; not a substitute for a pouch in steady rain |
| 5 | Water jetting | Protection against water jets; does not describe submersion |
| 6 | Powerful jetting | Protection against strong jets; still not a submersion rating |
| 7 | Temporary immersion to 1 m | Short immersion only, under the defined conditions |
| 8 | Continuous immersion at 1 m or more | Continuous immersion, with the depth and conditions set by the manufacturer |
Sony emphasizes checking the exact conditions for each product and drying covers and areas where water can collect. Those are the parts of a device most likely to let water in during a hike, so check port covers, SIM trays, and case flaps after every wet section.
Keep the battery working in the cold
Cold reduces battery performance, and it does so before a phone fails. Apple states that iPhone and iPad are designed for ambient operation from 0–35°C (32–95°F), with storage from -20–45°C (-4–113°F). Using the device outside its operating range may temporarily shorten battery life or cause it to shut down. Those are Apple’s figures for those products, not a universal limit for every phone, camera, GPS unit, or power bank.

| Condition (Apple iPhone and iPad) | Stated range | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Ambient operating temperature | 0–35°C (32–95°F) | Apple current support guidance; publication date not stated |
| Storage temperature | -20–45°C (-4–113°F) | Apple current support guidance; publication date not stated |
Use these figures as a starting point, then check the manual for the specific device you carry. Cold can also slow or stop charging, so do not plug in a phone that is cold to the touch and expect it to charge normally.
Practical cold habits
- Carry the phone in an inner pocket against your body, where it is protected from wind and stays warmer than an outside pocket.
- Keep the phone dry; cold and wet together increase the risk of a shutdown.
- Charge the phone before setting out, and charge it again at a warmer location when you can, rather than in the cold on the trail.
- Keep a spare power source in an inner pocket, and check its own operating-temperature information before relying on it.
If the phone gets wet
A wet phone is a charging hazard, so the first recovery step is to stop it from being connected to power. Samsung explicitly cautions against charging a wet phone, and Motorola advises drying the device and its ports thoroughly with a soft, clean cloth.

Keep the phone useful for navigation and emergencies
Protecting the phone from water does not solve the signal problem. The National Park Service, in its hiking guidance for Mount Rainier National Park, notes that cell coverage is limited in much of the park and that searching for a signal can quickly drain a phone battery. Its advice is to turn the phone off or use airplane mode until you need it.

- Put the phone in a closed waterproof pouch or sealed dry bag, in an inner pocket.
- Check the manufacturer’s IP rating and conditions for the exact model.
- Confirm port covers and case flaps are closed and seated.
- Switch to airplane mode when you are not using the phone to navigate or call.
- Carry the manual or support information for your model so you can check recovery steps on the trail.
These steps protect the device against the two most common hiking failures, water entry and cold-related power loss, and leave the phone ready when you need it.
