You can inspect and change feature flags from Claude Code or Cursor by connecting the client to a feature-management vendor’s Model Context Protocol (MCP) server. LaunchDarkly and Statsig both publish setup instructions for these two clients, but each vendor has its own server, login flow, permission model and list of operations, so you configure and verify each one separately. Every write should pass through an approval step before it reaches a live project.

What the MCP connection gives your coding agent

MCP is a way for an AI client to call tools and read data from an external service. In Cursor, MCP servers are installed from the Customize page or defined in an mcp.json file, and Cursor supports remote servers that authenticate with OAuth. Once connected, the agent can call the server’s tools in the same conversation where you are editing code, which is what makes flag inspection practical during development. The same idea applies in Claude Code, where the server is added from the command line.

The practical consequence is that the agent acts with whatever access your vendor account has. A server that can read flags can usually also change them, so the setup and approval steps below matter as much as the configuration.

Choose the vendor first

The two vendors documented here serve different parts of the workflow, and the reviewed pages do not compare them on performance, reliability, price or security, so the table below only lists what each vendor documents.

Documented clients Cursor (hosted server with OAuth, per its tutorial); Claude Code named among compatible clients for its agent skills Cursor and Claude Code, both with OAuth setup pages
Authentication OAuth in the browser, using your existing account permissions OAuth; Personal Console API Keys creation must be enabled for your role by the organization owner
Documented feature scope Feature flags, plus AgentControl configuration and observability Gates, experiments, dynamic configs and related project data
Write operations Creating flags, turning flags on across environments, changing targeting (example prompts) Update tools require write access and confirmation
Hosted server availability Not available in LaunchDarkly federal or EU environments; the local MCP server is the documented alternative Not stated in the reviewed pages

If your team already uses one of these platforms, that choice usually settles the question. If you are evaluating both, check the hosted-availability row first, because it can rule out a server before you start.

Set up the connection in Cursor

LaunchDarkly in Cursor

LaunchDarkly’s tutorial describes connecting Cursor to its hosted server with OAuth, using a .cursor/mcp.json entry that points at the hosted endpoint. You authorize in a browser window, and the tutorial states that tool calls require explicit approval. Follow the entry as written in the tutorial, but check the current LaunchDarkly instructions before copying labels or configuration, because the tutorial is dated May 28, 2025 and the hosted endpoint is subject to the regional restriction noted above. The tutorial is published under LaunchDarkly’s EU documentation path, which does not change that restriction for EU environments.

Statsig in Cursor

  1. Open Cursor’s Customize page and add a new MCP server, or edit mcp.json directly.
  2. Point the server at https://api.statsig.com/v1/mcp.
  3. Choose OAuth and sign in when Cursor opens the browser flow.
  4. Confirm the server appears as connected, then ask the agent to list your feature flags to test the connection.

Statsig’s Cursor page says OAuth needs Personal Console API Keys creation enabled for your role. If the sign-in succeeds but flag operations fail, check that setting with your organization owner before changing anything in the configuration.

LaunchDarkly in Claude Code

LaunchDarkly’s MCP documentation names Claude Code among compatible clients for its agent skills, and it directs users to its installation page for provider-specific instructions. Use that live page for the exact Claude Code command. Do not adapt the Statsig command above, because the endpoint, authentication flow and server name belong to a different vendor.

What you can ask the agent to do

The vendors publish example prompts rather than a full operations list, so treat these as a starting point. Read-type requests are the safest way to confirm that the connection works.

  • “Create a feature flag called ‘example feature’ in my default project” (LaunchDarkly example prompt)
  • “Turn the ‘example feature’ flag ON in all environments” (LaunchDarkly example prompt)

Statsig’s examples also include reading a gate’s configuration, and its tool reference separates read operations from update operations. LaunchDarkly’s documentation covers changing targeting as well as turning a flag on. The reviewed pages do not state a complete tool list for either vendor, so check the tool names your client shows you before approving a call.

Review a proposed change before approving it

Cursor requires approval for MCP tool calls by default, and Statsig requires confirmation for update tools. Those prompts are the last check, not the first. A safer sequence is to get the agent’s proposal in plain language, then compare it against the live flag before you accept anything.

  1. Confirm the vendor account, project and environment. Ask the agent to restate them, and correct it if the environment is wrong.
  2. Ask the agent to read the target flag’s current state in the environment you intend to change.
  3. Ask the agent to summarize the exact operation: flag key, environment, targeting conditions and rollout scope.
  4. Open the client’s approval prompt and inspect the tool arguments, not just the tool name.
  5. Approve only the operation you described. Reject and re-ask if the arguments differ.
  6. Verify the result in the vendor’s own interface or with a follow-up read. Record the change in your team’s normal review and audit process.

Before approving any write, check these points:

  • The account and project are the ones you meant to change.
  • The environment is correct, and the flag key matches exactly, including similarly named flags.
  • The proposed values, targeting conditions and rollout percentage or segment match your request.
  • Your role has write permission, and any review policy your organization applies still runs.

The steps above are a recommended practice built on the approval and permission controls the vendors document. They are not a checklist either vendor mandates.

Limits and qualifications

  • Regional availability: LaunchDarkly documents that its hosted server is not available in federal or EU environments and points those users to its local MCP server.
  • Two different Statsig servers: Statsig also publishes a public, read-only Docs MCP server. It answers questions from documentation and does not access your project data. The authenticated server at https://api.statsig.com/v1/mcp is the one that reads and changes flags.
  • Dated instructions: The LaunchDarkly tutorial is dated May 28, 2025. The Statsig and Cursor pages reviewed here did not display a publication date, so confirm current labels and commands on each page before you copy them.
  • Enterprise controls: Cursor offers organization controls over which MCP servers and tools are allowed. If your administrator has restricted them, a server may connect but not expose every tool.

LaunchDarkly’s tutorial states the approval principle directly: “MCP servers require explicit approval before calling external APIs as a security measure.” That principle is why the review steps above exist; the approval prompt is only useful when you read it.
