Blog copywriting is persuasive writing published in blog format. A blog copywriting post answers a real reader question and, in the same piece, moves that reader toward a business outcome such as learning about a service, trying a product, or taking another clear next step. The persuasion is supposed to follow from the useful content, not replace it.

What blog copywriting means

A blog is a format, not a purpose. Blog copywriting describes the case where a company or writer uses that format to promote a brand, product, or service. Informational blogging, by contrast, can aim to educate, entertain, or share personal insight without any deliberate sales goal.

In practice the two often overlap. A post can answer a genuine question, such as how to choose a password manager for a small office, and then explain where a relevant offer fits. The post is blog copywriting when the business goal is intentional and the offer is part of the reader’s path. It stops being useful when the sales message takes over the page.

How it differs from informational blogging and SEO copywriting

Three terms get mixed together. The table below separates them by primary purpose and by what the writer is trying to achieve beyond the reader’s own question.

#1 Best Overall
Type Primary purpose How directly it promotes a brand or offer Intentional reader action Search goal
Informational blogging Educate, entertain, or share insight Not a deliberate goal Optional; often none May exist but is not the organizing aim
Blog copywriting Inform while persuading toward a business outcome Direct but tied to the reader’s need Yes, a defined next step Optional
SEO copywriting Content for search engines and human readers Varies with the business model Varies Central: search visibility balanced with readability

SEO copywriting is the overlapping approach. Ahrefs, in its SEO copywriting guide published July 20, 2023, defines it as high-quality content aimed at both search engines and human users, and frames the task as balancing visibility with content people want to read, link to, and share. A blog copywriting post can use SEO methods, but it does not need to be built around a keyword to qualify.

A workflow for writing copywriting blog posts

The steps below follow the order most useful for a business blog. Each one shapes the next, so skipping the first usually shows up as a vague draft later.

1. Define the reader and the next step

Start by naming who the reader is, what they want to learn or do, and what action would help them afterward. That action might be booking a call, downloading a guide, or simply reading a related article. Yoast recommends deciding the intended next step before drafting, because the call to action, the examples, and the level of detail all depend on it.

2. Research the query and the expected answer

Find out what people search for on the topic and what kind of answer the query calls for. A question that expects a how-to needs steps. A comparison query needs a table. For search-focused posts, identify one main phrase and a set of related subtopics, then match the format the searcher expects. Keywords dropped into an unrelated draft tend to rank poorly and read badly.

3. Put the answer first and structure around questions

Give the central answer near the top of the post. Then organize the rest around the questions a reader would ask next, with headings that make sense on their own. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, in its Guidelines for effective writing (last modified March 4, 2026), advises writers to “Get to the point.” The same guidance supports meaningful headings and scannable sections, which is what lets a reader find the part they need without reading everything.

4. Draft with plain words and concrete examples

Prefer common words, short paragraphs, and specific examples over general claims. A sentence such as “this tool saves time” is weaker than one that shows the steps a user takes and what changes. Add original analysis or a distinctive angle, such as a comparison you ran yourself or a mistake you have seen clients make. Verify every factual claim before publishing, including dates, prices, and version numbers.

Google Search Central’s guidance on helpful content points to effort, originality, skill, and accuracy as qualities associated with useful main content. Those qualities matter more for a commercial blog than a neutral one, because readers already expect some persuasion and will discount claims they cannot check.

5. Edit for the promise and for scanning

Check whether the post delivers what its title and introduction promised. Read each heading and confirm that it reflects the paragraph beneath it. Add search terms only where they fit naturally. Yoast’s copywriting training describes SEO-friendly content as original, readable, and findable, and it does not rank findability above originality or readability. If a sentence exists only to hit a phrase, cut it.

6. Place a call to action that follows from the post

A call to action should be the logical next step after the answer the reader just received. It can point to a product or service, a subscription, or a related resource. A call to action that has nothing to do with the post’s question feels misplaced and usually lowers trust. One clear action per post works better than a row of competing buttons.

7. Promote the post and keep it current

A post can be shared through social channels, newsletters, and relevant communities. Maintenance matters as much as launch. Yoast recommends updating posts so that prices, steps, and screenshots stay accurate. Google AdSense’s publisher guide on content planning, dated April 26, 2017, offers stable advice about content calendars and audience-interest data, although its specific tools and interface details may be out of date.

Hiring a copywriter for a blog

Not every business has an in-house writer. HostAdvice, in its article on blog copywriting published September 18, 2026, names Upwork and Fiverr as freelance platforms where companies look for writers. Before hiring through either site, ask for samples on similar topics, confirm who fact-checks the draft, and agree in writing who owns the finished text. Those points matter more than a writer’s general claims about SEO.

The same workflow applies whether you write the post yourself or hand it to someone else. Give the writer the reader, the intended next step, and the facts that must be checked, and the result will be easier to judge.

Blog copywriting works when the post serves the reader first and the business goal second. Start from who the reader is and what they need to do next, and the structure, examples, and call to action usually follow.
