Pokémon Insurgence does not document native gamepad support. The game’s official FAQ instead recommends running a separate program that maps gamepad buttons to keyboard keys, then assigning those keys to the game’s controls. The FAQ names AntiMicro and JoyToKey as examples of such programs, and it does not say whether either one works with your particular controller, connection type, or operating system.
Before you start
Pokémon Insurgence is a fan game. The official website describes it that way and lists Windows downloads along with a Mac guide. Because the game is controlled through the keyboard, a controller only works if a mapping program translates its button presses into key presses that the game receives.
- A gamepad that your operating system already recognizes.
- A mapping program such as AntiMicro or JoyToKey. The FAQ’s exact wording is “antimicro or joy2key,” so the second name appears there in the older spelling.
- The game installed and working with the keyboard first, so you know the game itself runs correctly before you add a layer on top of it.
Set up the gamepad in a mapping program
The FAQ does not give menu-by-menu instructions for either program, so the steps below describe the general workflow. Menu names differ between versions, so use the program’s own help pages if a label does not match.

- Install the mapping program and connect your gamepad before opening it. Plug in a wired controller or pair a wireless one using your operating system’s normal method.
- Open the mapping program and confirm that it detects the controller and shows its buttons responding when pressed.
- Create a profile for Pokémon Insurgence if the program supports profiles. This keeps the game’s bindings separate from your other games.
- Bind each gamepad button you plan to use to the keyboard key that the game uses for that action. You will usually need keys for directions, confirm, cancel, and the menu.
- Save the profile and make it active before you launch the game. Some programs only apply mappings while they are running, so keep the program open during play.
Remap the game’s controls with F1
If the default keyboard controls are awkward for your layout, the FAQ says to press F1 in the game to adjust them. Make your changes in the game’s control screen, then check that each mapped button performs the action you expect. If the default layout works, you can skip this step and keep the keys the game already uses.

Mac users
The FAQ notes that Mac users may need to press fn+F1 instead of F1. It also warns that a system setting may decide whether function keys are read as function keys or as screen controls such as brightness or volume. If F1 does nothing, check your keyboard settings in System Settings and allow the function keys to act as standard function keys, then try again. The FAQ does not spell out the exact menu path for this, so confirm the current label on your macOS version.
Avoid conflicts with the game’s shortcuts
The official FAQ lists several keyboard shortcuts. If you bind a gamepad button to one of these keys, pressing that button will trigger the shortcut as well as the action you intended. Choose your mappings with these in mind.

- F toggles autosave.
- S toggles autorun.
- P refreshes the map.
- F12 performs a soft reset.
A soft reset is the one to be most careful with, because a button pressed by accident can restart the game. Bind it to a button that is hard to press by mistake, or leave it unmapped.

- Whether either mapping program works on your version of Windows or macOS, or with your version of the game.
- Feature, price, or ease-of-setup comparisons between AntiMicro and JoyToKey. The FAQ does not compare them.
- Any native controller mode built into the game.
If your controller behaves unexpectedly, test each button in the game’s menus before you rely on it during a long session. If a mapping does not work, check that the mapping program is running, that the profile is active, and that the game window has focus.
