Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) is a Microsoft .NET framework for building service-oriented applications. Services built with it exchange messages through endpoints, and each endpoint combines three parts: an address, a binding and a contract.
What WCF is
Microsoft Learn’s overview page, titled “What Is Windows Communication Foundation – WCF,” describes WCF as a framework for building service-oriented applications. It explains that WCF sends data as asynchronous messages between service endpoints. In practice, that means one piece of software (the service) makes its functions available, and other pieces of software (the clients) call them by exchanging messages, rather than sharing code or memory directly.
The endpoint model: address, binding and contract
Everything a client needs to reach a WCF service is packaged in an endpoint. An endpoint gives clients access to the service’s functionality, and it is defined by three components. Understanding these three parts is the key to reading WCF configuration and documentation.

The address tells a client where the endpoint can be found. A client cannot call a service it cannot locate, so the address is the first piece of information any caller must have.

Binding: how the two sides communicate
The binding specifies the communication settings. Microsoft’s documentation groups these into transport, message encoding and protocol details. Client and service settings must be compatible: if the two ends were configured with incompatible bindings, they would not be able to exchange messages successfully.
Contract: what the service offers
The contract describes the operations the service exposes. Microsoft describes service contracts in terms of three things: the operations available, the message exchange pattern each operation uses, and the message and data types exchanged.

A simple way to remember the model, which is an explanatory analogy rather than Microsoft terminology, is this: the address is where you call, the binding is the agreed method and settings for the call, and the contract is what the service promises to do when you call it.

WCF operations are built on message exchange patterns. Microsoft’s documentation identifies three basic patterns. These describe how messages flow between the parties; they are not three separate products.

One-way
The client sends a message and does not expect a reply from the service.
Request/reply
The client sends a request and the service returns a response. This is the familiar call-and-answer pattern.

Duplex (bidirectional)
Both sides can send messages to each other, so the service can also initiate communication back to the client.
Where you will meet WCF
WCF terms appear most often in existing .NET codebases and technical documents that describe service interfaces. When reading that code or configuration, look for the three endpoint parts first: the address that identifies where the service lives, the binding that sets transport and encoding, and the contract that lists operations and message types. Once you can locate those three elements, the rest of a WCF configuration is usually easier to follow.
Current status, alternatives and limits of this definition
Microsoft’s WCF overview points to gRPC as a modern remote procedure call (RPC) alternative, and it links WCF developers to migration and comparison guidance. That overview is a starting point, not a complete basis for choosing or migrating to another technology. Comparing WCF with alternatives requires separate evaluation of protocol and transport requirements, interoperability, hosting and runtime constraints, security requirements and migration effort.
The definition above describes stable concepts. It does not establish the current support status of WCF or of any particular .NET Framework version, and it does not show that WCF is recommended or discontinued for a given project. Several of the Microsoft pages that explain WCF are older documentation, so before starting new work, check Microsoft’s current support and lifecycle documentation for the .NET version you plan to target.
