To use an HDMI port, find the number printed beside it on your TV, note which numbered socket your device is plugged into, then press the remote’s Input or Source button and choose the matching HDMI entry. Port labels and menu names differ between manufacturers and models, so when the labels are missing or unclear, the model’s reference or startup guide is the reliable guide to which socket does what.

Find the HDMI sockets on your TV

HDMI sockets are normally on the back of the set. Many models also have one or more on a side panel, and some wall-mounted sets make the rear sockets hard to reach. Look for the HDMI logo and a number printed next to each socket. Those numbers are the names you will see in the input list.

Not every TV labels its sockets. Sony’s support material states plainly that the HDMI ports on some televisions may have no labels at all. In that case, do not guess. Use the port diagram in the reference or startup guide for your exact model.

Find your exact model number

Layouts and port specifications change from one model to the next, even within one product line. The model number is usually printed on the rear panel label or shown in the TV’s settings menu under the system or support information section. Search for that number on the manufacturer’s official product support page to find the manual and the port diagram.

Check the port diagram before you rely on labels

The diagram in the manual is the authority for that TV’s ports. Sony’s guidance is that the product reference or startup guide includes a port diagram that shows where each socket is and what it can do. Use the diagram to confirm which number belongs to which socket, especially when a label is faded, hidden behind a stand, or absent.

Identify which HDMI number your device uses

The input number has to match the physical connection. The TV only knows which device is on which socket through the number you select, so a mismatch will show you the wrong picture or a blank screen.

  1. Turn off the TV or leave it on, and locate the cable running from your device (a game console, set-top box, streaming stick, or Blu-ray player).
  2. Follow that cable to its end at the TV. Note the number printed beside that socket. Do not rely on the cable’s position alone, because stacked or angled sockets are easy to miscount.
  3. Write down the number. If the TV has several sources, a removable label on each cable is a practical aid. LG’s support material recommends color-coded sticky notes or labels for households with several devices. This is optional; the free steps above are enough for most setups.

Sony’s example illustrates the logic. If the set-top box is connected to HDMI 1 and a PS5 is connected to HDMI 2, selecting HDMI 1 shows the set-top box and selecting HDMI 2 shows the PS5. Selecting an unused input may show a black screen, which is normal and does not by itself indicate a fault.

Switch to the correct HDMI input

Once you know which number your device uses, select it on the TV. The exact screens vary by brand and software version, but the general sequence is the same.

  1. Switch on the TV and the device you want to watch.
  2. Press the Input or Source button on the remote. Some remotes label it with a symbol or an arrow into a box rather than a word.
  3. In the list that appears, select the HDMI entry that matches the number on the socket, such as HDMI 2. Some models show the name of the connected device instead of the port number. If so, pick the device you connected to that port.
  4. If the screen stays blank, confirm that the device is on and that the input you selected is the one with the cable. Pressing the Input or Source button again will cycle through the other sources.

Match the port to the audio or video job

Not every HDMI socket on a TV has the same capability. Some sockets support features such as ARC or eARC, which lets a TV send audio back to a soundbar or AV receiver, and some support higher video modes such as 4K at 120 Hz. Those capabilities are model-specific. A port that works well for a game console may not be the one your soundbar needs.

Check four things before you move a cable:

  • Audio return: whether the port is the one designated as ARC or eARC on your model, if you use a soundbar or receiver that needs audio return.
  • Video capability: whether the port supports the resolution and refresh rate your console or player requires, such as 4K at 120 Hz.
  • Source requirements: what the connected device needs, as listed in its own manual.
  • Model-specific port map: the exact designation for each socket in the TV manual.

Sony’s support article on checking for an eARC or ARC port notes that some TVs have no ARC or eARC marking on the socket at all. Do not infer that a port lacks the feature because its label is missing. The manual’s port diagram is the place to confirm.

Use CEC for device control, not as a replacement for the input list

CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) is a feature that lets compatible devices coordinate with the TV. It can allow the TV to power a device on or switch to it, and some remotes can control the connected device. CEC is optional coordination. You still need to know which input a device uses, because CEC does not remove the need to select the correct HDMI entry.

CEC must be turned on in both the TV and the connected device. The menu names differ by brand. Roku’s guide lists Anynet+, BRAVIA Sync, and SIMPLINK among the names used by different manufacturers. Sony’s guide lists AQUOS Link and VIERA Link, which are names used by other brands. Find the actual menu label in your own TV and device manuals, because menu paths vary by model and software version.

Cross-brand CEC compatibility can be unreliable. Sony’s support material warns that a device from a different manufacturer may not respond as expected, so a CEC switch that works between two sets from the same maker may fail with a third-party player.

Troubleshoot a device that does not appear or will not switch

If a device does not show up in the input list, or a CEC-based switch fails, work through these checks in order. They cost nothing and resolve most cases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Power: confirm the connected device is switched on and not in a sleep state that cuts HDMI output.
  • Cable seating: push the HDMI plug fully into the socket at both ends. A partly seated plug can leave the input showing no signal.
  • CEC settings: confirm CEC is enabled on the TV and on the device, using the names in your manuals.
  • Another port: move the device to a different HDMI socket and select that number. This rules out a faulty socket and confirms the input number you are choosing.
  • Another cable: if the problem persists, try a different High-Speed HDMI cable. Roku’s guidance suggests this as a later step rather than the first.

If the device still does not appear after those checks, the problem is more likely to be a setting or a fault in one device rather than the port itself. Consult the manuals for the TV and the source device, and contact the manufacturer’s support if the problem continues.
