An older iPhone can still be useful as a bedside clock, a Mac webcam, a dedicated music player, a reading or casual-game device, a smart-home controller, or a backup source of cellular internet. Whether each idea works depends on three things: the phone’s model, the iOS version it can run, and whether the feature needs another device, a home hub, or a paid service. Apple documents some of these uses directly. Others need no special feature at all.
Check the model and software before you start
Apple’s feature requirements differ from one feature to the next, and Apple’s support pages do not establish that every older iPhone can run the latest iOS or any particular feature. Before you plan around the phone, confirm two things:
- Model: Open Settings > General > About and read the model name.
- Software: Open Settings > General > Software Update to see the installed iOS version and whether an update is available.
Some ideas below include a stated baseline. Where Apple does not state one, the article says so instead of guessing. A phone that cannot run a required iOS version may still work for offline uses such as reading or as a clock, but it will not support features that depend on newer software.

1. Use it as a bedside clock or photo display
StandBy is the most direct option. When the iPhone is charging and placed on its side in landscape orientation, StandBy can show a clock, photos, widgets, and Live Activities. A charging stand makes the setup easier, but it is optional; any stable surface works. Keep the phone where it will not slide off, and keep the charging cable within reach so it does not pull the phone out of position overnight.

Whether the screen stays lit depends on the model. On supported models, Always-On display can keep StandBy visible. On other models, you need to tap the screen, move the phone, or ask Siri to wake the display. Display timing is configurable, so you can set how long StandBy stays on after you tap. Apple’s StandBy support article does not set one universal battery-health threshold for this feature, so if the battery is weak, test the phone while it charges before relying on it as a nightstand clock.
2. Use it as a webcam or microphone for a Mac
Continuity Camera lets a nearby iPhone act as a webcam or microphone for a Mac. Apple’s documented baseline for Mac webcam use is an iPhone XR or later running iOS 16 or later, paired with a Mac running macOS Ventura 13 or later. Compatible third-party camera apps can also use the iPhone as a camera.
The setup needs several conditions at once:
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on for both devices.
- The same Apple Account signed in on both devices.
- The two devices close to each other.
Apple also supports a wired USB connection. If you use the iPhone while it charges, Apple recommends a cable. If you have an iPhone older than the XR, this feature is not part of Apple’s stated baseline, so check your model before you buy anything for it.

3. Keep it as a dedicated music or podcast player
A phone used only for listening keeps music off your main device and can stay in a kitchen, car, or gym bag. Streaming works when the phone has a network connection and you are signed in to the relevant service. Offline playback depends on the specific app and on what content you have downloaded to the device, so check each app’s download settings before you leave home. Apple’s support pages do not establish the terms or availability of any particular streaming service, so confirm those with the service itself.
4. Use it as a spare reader or game device
An older iPhone that still runs the apps you need can serve as a household reading device or a casual-game device for a child or guest. App support and performance depend on the model and the installed iOS version, and Apple’s documentation does not measure performance for specific apps. Install the apps you want while the phone is on a current network, then test them before handing it over.
Keep app purchases and parental-control settings in mind. Using an old phone for games does not change how app purchases or Screen Time limits work, and it should not be used to get around either.

5. Make it a smart-home controller
The Home app on an older iPhone can control Apple Home-compatible accessories while you are at home. Remote control, which is control from outside the house, needs a home hub: Apple TV 4K or HomePod, set up with the same Apple Account. The old iPhone is the controller in this arrangement. It does not replace the hub for remote access.
If you have no hub, the phone can still control devices on your home Wi-Fi network. Remote access simply will not work until a hub is added.
6. Keep it as backup cellular internet
Personal Hotspot shares the phone’s cellular internet connection with a laptop, tablet, or other device. Whether this works depends on your carrier and your plan. Check your plan’s data allowance and any hotspot limits before you rely on it.

Two limits matter. First, the phone cannot receive a Wi-Fi network and rebroadcast that same network through Personal Hotspot. Second, if Personal Hotspot does not appear in Settings even though cellular data is on, Apple’s guidance is to contact your carrier. The phone will need an active cellular plan for this idea to work.

If you keep the phone as a spare
A spare phone is easier to recover if you prepare it now. Find My can locate the device, but only if it is turned on before the phone goes missing. Turn on Find My iPhone in Settings, under your name at the top of the Settings screen, before you need it.

Apple’s Find My support article describes two states. An online device can appear on a map and play a sound. An offline device may show its last known location, but it cannot play a sound until it reconnects.
If you are giving the phone away or selling it
Handing the phone to someone else changes the priorities. Apple recommends backing up and transferring your information first, then removing personal data. Follow these steps in order:
- Back up the phone to iCloud or a computer, and move anything you want to keep, such as photos and contacts, to your new device.
- Do not delete photos or contacts by hand while signed in to iCloud as a substitute for a full erase. Apple warns that this can remove them from iCloud and other connected devices too.
- Sign out of iCloud and turn off Find My if you are not going to erase the phone immediately.
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone, then choose Erase All Content and Settings.
- If the phone uses an eSIM, you may be asked whether to erase the eSIM profile too. Choose this when the phone is leaving your hands, and contact your carrier if you need to keep the number on another device.
Erase All Content and Settings removes personal data and turns off Find My and Activation Lock. Apple’s guidance on selling, giving away, or trading in an iPhone was updated on June 12, 2026, and it is the reference to check if your steps differ from these.
