To clone your own voice through the ElevenLabs API, start with the Instant Voice Clone (IVC) route. Call the IVC create method with a name and one or more audio files of your voice, then save the voice_id it returns. That ID is what you pass to later speech-generation requests. Ownership and consent come first, because the clone is only as legitimate as your right to use the voice in it.
This guide starts where ElevenLabs’ API quickstart ends. Account creation, API key generation and SDK installation are covered in the general quickstart in the ElevenLabs developer documentation, and they are assumed here.
Who may clone which voice
Before you record anything, settle the ownership question. The IVC flow asks you to confirm that you have the right and consent to clone the voice. Where it is unclear whether a use is permitted, ElevenLabs directs users to its Terms of Service and AI Safety information. The Instant Voice Cloning documentation sets out that requirement.
Professional Voice Cloning is stricter. ElevenLabs’ Help Center answers the question of cloning someone else’s voice this way: “You can only create a Professional Voice Clone of your own voice.” That remains true even if the other person consents. The voice owner can create and verify the PVC on their own account and share it privately with you, which is the route to use if the voice is not yours. The answer is in the ElevenLabs Help Center.

ElevenLabs describes voice verification as a safeguard in its voice cloning overview, and states that authorized use remains the creator’s responsibility. Read those descriptions as ElevenLabs’ own account of its controls. They are not a guarantee that misuse is prevented, and they do not replace your obligation to use only voices you are entitled to clone.
Prepare the recording
The quality of the source audio matters more than almost any other factor. ElevenLabs’ guidance is consistent on the basics:

- Record one speaker only. Remove other voices, music and crowd noise.
- Use clean, clear speech with minimal background noise and no room echo (reverberation).
- Keep volume and tone consistent. Avoid long silent gaps.
- Export as MP3 at 192 kbps or higher.
- For IVC, aim for about 1–2 minutes of good audio, as stated in the Instant Voice Cloning documentation.
More audio is not automatically better for IVC. ElevenLabs’ product FAQ says audio quality matters more than the number of samples, and that more than roughly 2–3 minutes may add little and can sometimes hurt stability. The same documentation puts the principle this way: “The bottom line is: good consistent input = good consistent output.”

Create an Instant Voice Clone with the API
The IVC call follows the pattern in the Instant Voice Cloning quickstart. It needs three inputs: an API key, a name for the clone, and one or more audio files.
Keep the API key out of your code
Store the key in an environment variable named ELEVENLABS_API_KEY, set in your shell environment or a secrets manager. Do not commit it to version control. Do not place it in a browser page, a mobile app or any client you distribute, because the key would then sit on other people’s machines. Run IVC calls from a server or a local script you control.

Replace voice-sample.mp3 with your own recording. Add further files to the files list if you have more than one.

This is a simplified version of the official quickstart pattern, not a copy of it. Check the SDK reference for the version you install before running it, because method names and parameters can change between releases.

What the call returns
The create call returns a voice object. Printing voice.voice_id gives the identifier for your new clone. Save that string with your configuration, together with the name you chose, so later scripts can reuse the voice without creating it again.
Use the voice ID for speech generation
The voice ID is an input, not the end product. Pass it to the speech-generation endpoint described in ElevenLabs’ API reference, which defines the request format and parameters for your SDK version. This guide does not reproduce those request schemas. Start with a short test sentence and listen for accent, pacing and tone before you generate longer content.
Professional Voice Cloning: the longer route
Professional Voice Cloning (PVC) is a separate workflow. It is built from a much larger body of recorded speech and produces a dedicated, fine-tuned clone. Choose it only when you can supply that volume of audio and want the extra accuracy the workflow is meant to deliver. ElevenLabs does not promise an exact match in either route.

- A plan of Creator or above. The Professional Voice Cloning quickstart states this requirement.
- About 30–180 minutes of good audio, recorded to the same standards as for IVC. This range is ElevenLabs’ stated guidance for PVC.
- A voice that is your own. The ownership rule described above applies in full.
The API sequence
- Create the PVC on your account, using the create call shown in the quickstart.
- Upload your audio samples to that PVC.
- Complete the voice verification step the quickstart describes.
- Wait for fine-tuning to finish. Processing time depends on queue and load, and the quickstart does not give a fixed duration.
- Use the resulting voice ID in speech generation, in the same way as an IVC voice ID.
Check the PVC quickstart for the exact calls and their order before you build around them, since the API surface changes over time.

Troubleshooting accent and quality problems
- Accent or tone drifts between phrases. The recording probably mixes speaking styles or paces. Re-record in one consistent tone and speed.
- Background noise or echo appears in the output. Re-record in a quieter, less reverberant room, with the microphone closer to your mouth.
- The clone sounds unlike you after a long upload. Test with a trimmed 1–2 minute version of your best audio, since extra material beyond roughly 2–3 minutes may add little for IVC.
- Results stay weak after cleaning the input. Compare against PVC if you can supply the larger recording set.
- Expecting exact imitation. Each clone may sound somewhat different even when built from the same samples. Judge the result against what the voice is for, not against a perfect copy.
