There is no single best all-day shoe for flat feet. The sources reviewed for this guide agree on a narrower point: a shoe that fits your foot’s width and shape, holds the heel firmly, and gives stable support through the midfoot is more likely to suit long hours of walking or standing than a shoe chosen only because it has a tall arch profile. Start with that fit and stability check, then compare the named models below.

Why flat feet don’t point to one shoe

Flat or low arches vary. Some people with low arches have no pain at all, and some have foot pain that a shoe change may help. Flat feet on their own do not tell you how much support you need. One podiatrist-reviewed guide, a 2026 piece from Michigan Foot Doctors, addresses flat feet that also overpronate (the foot rolls inward excessively when it lands) and recommends stability or motion-control construction for that group. That advice should not be stretched to every low arch. A foot with flat arches but no overpronation may do well in a different level of support, and a foot that does not match a stability shoe can feel worse in it.

A Foot & Ankle Center of Washington handout from 2024 makes the same point from the other direction: not everyone needs the most stable shoe available, and trying footwear is the practical way to find out what your foot tolerates. The same handout includes the sentence “Also, be aware that there is no ‘best’ shoe.” It does not name the shoe researcher it refers to, so that is the attribution to use.

What to check in any shoe

Heel hold and torsional rigidity

Press the heel counter (the rigid cup around the back of the heel). It should hold the heel in place without digging in. Torsional rigidity is the shoe’s resistance to twisting along its length. Pick the shoe up and try to twist the forefoot against the heel. A shoe that folds easily gives the midfoot little to work with.

Midfoot stability and flex

SELF’s April 3, 2025 walking-shoe guide, which summarizes expert advice from podiatry and physical therapy sources, asks readers to look for a stable design with some flexibility, enough that the shoe bends at the ball of the foot but does not fold in half. Check that the shoe bends where your toes move, not in the middle of the arch.

Width and toe box

Fit comes before features. A shoe that is too narrow or has a cramped toe box can create pressure that outweighs any support benefit. Several of the models below are sold in multiple widths, but the sources do not establish which width suits any particular foot. Measure your foot while standing, and try the width you normally wear and one size wider.

Cushioning versus arch support

Cushioning and arch support are different features. Soft cushioning changes how the foot feels on impact. Arch support is structural shaping under the foot. More arch support is not automatically better. SELF’s expert guidance is to look for good support without excess, because a shoe that pushes too hard under the arch can cause discomfort of its own. If you want a softer feel, check whether the shoe still holds the heel and midfoot before choosing it.

Matching a shoe to standing, walking or running

Standing for long periods

For jobs that involve long standing, the sources emphasize stable heel and midfoot support and a shoe that does not fold under body weight. Consider a shoe with a firm heel counter and enough room in the forefoot so your toes are not compressed for hours.

If your walking is mostly flat terrain with a stable surface, these are the starting point the sources name.

Do you need orthotics or an insole?

An insole is optional. Some people with flat feet use one, and some do not need any added support. If you plan to use a custom orthotic or an over-the-counter insole such as the PowerStep Pinnacle, check the following before you buy the shoe:

  • Remove the stock sockliner and confirm it comes out. Some shoes are glued in and cannot take a removable insole.
  • Put your insole in the shoe with the stock sockliner removed and check that the shoe has enough depth above the insole to avoid pressing on the top of the foot or the toes.
  • Test the combination for at least a full walk, not only a step on the carpet, and note any new pressure points.

How to try on shoes for all-day use

  1. Shop in the afternoon or evening, when feet are at their largest after a day of use.
  2. Wear the socks and any insole you plan to use with the shoe.
  3. Stand in the shoe and press the heel back into the counter. The heel should stay put when you lift your toes.
  4. Walk on a flat surface and then on a slope or stairs if the store has them. Look for rubbing, pinching or pressure at the sides of the forefoot.
  5. Try the width you normally wear and one size wider. Compare how each feels after several minutes of standing, not only in the first few seconds.
  6. Check that the shoe bends where your toes move and does not fold when you squeeze the heel and forefoot together.

What the evidence does and does not show

Manufacturer claims

Skechers’ Arch Fit product page, which was crawled in 2026 and is undated, says the design draws on “120,000 foot scans” and “over 20 years of data.” These are the manufacturer’s own figures. They are not independent clinical validation, and they do not show that the shoe is more comfortable for flat feet than any other shoe.

Comparative clinical data

The sources reviewed for this guide include no independently published clinical outcome study that directly compares the named shoes for comfort or injury prevention. Recommendations from a clinic guide, a magazine’s expert picks and a manufacturer page are useful for narrowing your options. They are not proof that any named shoe will be comfortable for all-day wear, and no source establishes that flat feet always cause pain or that shoes correct foot structure.

When to see a clinician

Shoe changes are a reasonable first step for many people, but they are not a substitute for an assessment when symptoms persist. See a podiatrist or other foot care clinician if:

  • Foot, ankle, knee, hip or back pain lasts for more than a few weeks or keeps coming back.
  • Pain or fatigue is getting worse, or it changes how you walk or stand.
  • You notice numbness, swelling, a visible change in the foot’s shape, or a sore that does not heal.
  • Pain affects your work, sleep or everyday activities even after you have tried properly fitted shoes.

A clinician can measure how your foot moves under load and advise whether a stability shoe, an insole, or no added support fits your situation.
