A 35-character limit is real in several shipping systems, but it is not a rule that every carrier applies to every address. In the documentation reviewed for this article, UPS WorldShip and FedEx Ship Manager cap individual address fields at 35 characters, while the USPS Label API truncates printed label text at 32 characters for the service types it covers. When an address appears cut to 35 characters, the first step is to find out which field, which system, and which stage of the process is responsible, because the fix depends on that answer.
What the 35-character figure actually measures
The number describes a data-entry field, not the whole address and not necessarily the printed label. Each system sets its own limits, and the documents below are the primary sources for them.

The publication years for these documents are not stated in the copies reviewed, so this article cites the version numbers and field descriptions rather than dates. Check the version shown on your own installed software, because limits can change between releases.
Entry limits and printed-label limits are different problems
Two separate constraints can produce the same symptom. The first is what the shipping software accepts when you type or import an address. The second is what survives onto the label, which depends on the label layout and, for USPS covered services, a documented 32-character printed maximum. An address can be stored in full in one place and still be shortened on the label, or it can be cut at entry before it ever reaches the label stage.

This distinction matters because the fixes differ. If the field itself stops at 35 characters, the content has to be split across Address 1, Address 2, and Address 3 or shortened. If the stored address is complete but the printed line is short, the problem is in the label output for that service, and editing the address book will not change it.
Why a long line gets cut in the first place
Address lines are fixed-width by design. A label needs predictable positions for the street, unit, city, state, and ZIP code, and the carrier’s systems are built around those positions. In a WorldShip or Ship Manager workflow, that means the address is entered as separate components rather than as one long string. UPS’s address-formatting guidance follows the same approach: it shows the street address, city, state, and ZIP code as separate components, and recommends including the apartment number and directional information such as NW, SE, NE, or SW in the street address.

That guidance has a practical consequence. A common cause of a “cut” address is a long street line with the unit number at the end. If the line is already near the field limit, the unit identifier is the part that disappears, and the label may be delivered without the detail that identifies the apartment or suite. Put the unit identifier in a field that the workflow actually prints, and do not rely on the end of a long line surviving.
Keep the details that affect delivery
Apartment or suite numbers and directional prefixes or suffixes are the details most likely to matter at delivery. Before you ship, confirm that each of them is present in the final address shown in the carrier’s address check or preview, not only in the entry form. FedEx’s user guide describes a FedEx Address Checker control beside Address 1 in Ship Manager. Where a comparable check exists in your workflow, use it and compare the returned address with what you entered.

Find out where the text disappears
Work through these steps in order. Each one narrows the cause before you change anything.
- Identify the exact product and version. Record the carrier, the software or integration (for example, WorldShip, Ship Manager, or an API-based platform), its version number, the shipping service, and the destination country.
- Locate the stage where the text is lost. Check the address at entry, after import, in the address book, at the point of label purchase, and on the printed label. Note which stage first shows the shortened text.
- Compare the affected line with the field documentation. Count the characters in the exact line. Check whether that field is one of the 35-character fields described above, or whether the workflow is governed by the 32-character USPS printed limit.
- Check for an interface warning. Note whether the system rejects the excess text with a message, or silently accepts and shortens it. These two behaviors call for different responses.
- Run the carrier’s address check. Confirm that apartment, suite, and directional details appear in the validated address, then confirm they appear on the label preview.
- Move overflow to the right field. If the line is over the limit, shorten the street wording using standard abbreviations where the carrier accepts them, or place the unit identifier in the Address 2 field so it is not lost at the end of a long street line.
These steps are an inference from the documented field lengths and layouts. They do not replace the carrier’s own support process, and they do not guarantee a fix for any particular platform.

Troubleshooting branches
- The address is cut in the address book but was complete when first typed. The import or sync step may be applying a field limit. Compare the stored value with the source file and check the field length in that workflow’s documentation.
- The address is complete on screen but shortened on the printed label. For USPS covered services, the printed maximum is 32 characters. Check whether the affected service uses that enumeration before assuming a data-entry problem.
- The line is over 35 characters and the system rejects it. The field limit is working as designed. Split the content across Address 1, Address 2, and Address 3 as the workflow allows.
- The text is cut silently in an integration or flat file. Check whether the field is measured in bytes rather than characters. Accented or non-ASCII characters can take more than one byte, so a line that looks under 35 characters may still exceed a byte count. Do not assume byte count and character count are the same.
- The cut only happens with one destination or service. Limits and label layouts can differ by service and destination country. Test the same address against a domestic and an international service to isolate the cause.
What is not established
The documentation reviewed does not establish one rule that every carrier, country, service, checkout page, or third-party platform follows. It does not show that a particular printer or label stock prevents truncation, and it does not diagnose any individual label. If the line is shortened on a platform not covered by the sources above, the carrier’s documentation for that product is the authority to check.
