The decisions that mattered most in building a 160-tool, browser-only site were the ones that stopped routes, sitemap entries, and tool registries from drifting apart as the catalogue grew. That is the central lesson of a DEV Community retrospective by the author 4min, published September 27, 2026, about FreeToolsY. The author built the site with Next.js 14 App Router, TypeScript, and Tailwind, and describes it as a set of client-side tools with no backend, pre-rendered at build time.
The figures and choices below are the author’s own account at the time of publication. They are not independent measurements, audits, or benchmarks, and they should be read as one developer’s implementation rather than a general standard.
What the author reports building
At publication, the author reported 399 static pages. These included 160 tools in English and Turkish, 24 guides per locale, category pages, and a handful of static pages. The sitemap held 392 URLs. Those two numbers measure different things, and the article does not use them interchangeably, so this piece will not either: 399 is the total number of pre-rendered pages, while 392 is the number of URLs listed in the sitemap.
Every tool is a client component. Once a page loads, the logic runs in the browser as plain JavaScript, and the site has no server component that handles tool input. The author treats this as the foundation for the other decisions, because it changes what the site has to maintain.

Decision 1: Browser-only tools, and what that buys and costs
The author frames the lack of a backend as a feature rather than a missing component. According to the account, it means there are no server logs to keep, no retention policy to write and enforce for user input, and no server dependency for the tools themselves. The author also says the tools keep working on a poor connection or on a machine with no network access, because the logic lives entirely in the front end.
Those are the author’s stated benefits. The article does not establish that every tool is safe to use with sensitive data, and it does not provide an independent security assessment. A browser-only design reduces where data can travel. It does not, by itself, verify what each tool does with the data inside the page, so readers should evaluate individual tools on their own terms.
Decision 2: Build all URLs through one path module
The site serves English and Turkish from a single [locale] route segment, so both languages share the same page code. The author found that building URLs by hand across components created a recurring trap: a small change in the URL convention had to be repeated everywhere it appeared.

The fix was a paths.ts module that owns URL construction. In the convention the author describes, English tool pages live at /tools/slug and Turkish pages at /tr/tools/slug. Canonical URLs point to the same-locale version of a page, and each language variant declares its alternate. Because the convention lives in one file, changing it means editing one module rather than hunting through the codebase.
What to check in your own project
- Search the codebase for hard-coded path strings, especially ones that include a locale prefix.
- Confirm that canonical and alternate-language tags are produced from the same helper that builds links.
- Test a locale switch on a handful of tool pages before and after any change to the convention.
Decision 3: Generate the sitemap from route data
The sitemap is generated from the same tools and guides data that defines the routes, instead of being maintained as a separate file. The author reports a revalidation interval of 86,400 seconds, which is 24 hours.
The reasoning is about avoiding a forgotten step. If a tool is added and the sitemap must be regenerated by hand, the sitemap can quietly fall behind the site. Driving both from one data source means a new entry in the data appears in routes and in the sitemap together. The account does not report how often the sitemap was out of date under the previous approach, so the benefit is described as structural rather than measured.

Decision 4: Check registries before the build runs
With 160 tools, the author needed three registries to agree: the tool list, the component map, and the icon map. A missing entry in one of them previously surfaced as a build failure late in the process, which made the cause harder to find.
The solution was a check-tools script that runs before every build. If the registries disagree, the check fails immediately and names the missing entry. The author presents this as a cheap guard that turns a confusing late error into a precise early one.

The Unicode workaround
Two tools needed Unicode handling: one to strip emoji and one to estimate reading time. The author replaced the unsupported Unicode regular expressions with explicit loops over code-point ranges. This is the author’s implementation, and the article does not present it as a general rule for TypeScript or as independently tested. Anyone facing the same constraint should confirm the replacement against the inputs their tools actually receive.
The general lesson
The useful habit is to check the target’s language and runtime support before adopting newer syntax or library features, not after the first failed build. The specific failures listed above are the author’s experience and will not necessarily match another target.
