A retrofit smart lock is a motorized unit that attaches to a lock you already have, so the door keeps part of its existing mechanical arrangement. “Matter over Thread” describes two separate layers working together: Matter is the smart-home application protocol that defines how the lock is described and controlled, and Thread is one of the network transports that carries those messages. Whether a given retrofit model works depends on two things a certification listing cannot settle for you: whether the unit physically fits your door, and whether your home has a Thread Border Router and a controlling platform that supports the lock. A Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) certification confirms standards conformance for a listed model. It does not prove that the model fits every door or exposes every lock feature in every app.
The mechanical layer: what a retrofit changes and what it keeps
A retrofit product keeps some of the existing hardware and adds motorized operation, so the mechanical fit question comes before any networking question. The CSA listing for the Dreame NAVO Smart Lock E10 describes the product as motorizing an existing lock without drilling or modifications. That is a claim about one product, not a property every retrofit lock shares.
Fit questions a certification listing does not answer
- Cylinder and bolt arrangement: whether the unit’s mounting works with your deadbolt or lever set.
- Thumb-turn: whether the unit can engage the inside turn on your door, and whether you can still turn it by hand afterwards.
- Door thickness and clearance: these dimensions appear in the manufacturer’s installation documentation for that exact model, not in certification records.
- Regional version: a model name can cover more than one hardware version or regional variant. Confirm that the version sold where you live matches your existing hardware.
What is Thread?
Thread is a low-power wireless mesh network. Devices relay messages to one another through the mesh, which is what makes it an energy-efficient transport for battery devices such as locks. Thread devices do not connect to your home network directly. They reach it through a Thread Border Router, which bridges the Thread mesh to the rest of the home network.

A border router can be built into another device. The Matter Retail Messaging Guide, a joint CSA and Thread Group publication, names smart speakers and home routers as examples. Do not assume that every Matter hub is a border router. Check the specification of the device you already own before buying a Thread lock. The Thread Group channel education page gives the wider background on how Matter and Thread relate.

Matter and Thread sit at different layers
Matter and Thread are not alternatives. They occupy different positions in the same stack, and a product’s certification record lists its transport interfaces separately from the word “Matter.”
| Layer | Role in a Matter over Thread lock | Reference |
|---|---|---|
| Physical | Motor and existing lock hardware that turns the bolt | Dreame NAVO Smart Lock E10 CSA listing |
| Application protocol | Matter describes the lock as a Door Lock device type and defines the clusters it exposes | Matter Device Library Specification R1.1 |
| Setup | Bluetooth Low Energy may be used during device setup | Thread Group channel education |
| Network transport | Matter connectivity can use Thread, Wi-Fi, or Ethernet | Thread Group channel education |
What the Matter logo and Door Lock certification mean
A Matter logo indicates that the product has been certified against the standard for the listed model. The specification that governs locks is the CSA’s Matter Device Library Specification R1.1, dated 2023-05-17. It defines a Door Lock this way: “A Door Lock is a device used to secure a door. It is possible to actuate a door lock either by means of a manual or a remote method.” The specification assigns the Door Lock device type ID 0x000A and requires a Door Lock server cluster on the endpoint.

That requirement is the floor, not the full feature set. The same specification lists optional and feature-dependent behavior, so two certified locks can differ in which credential types, events, or controls they expose on a given platform. Certification establishes conformance with the standard. It does not guarantee identical lock controls across ecosystems.
Certified examples: what each listing establishes
The three CSA listings below are the public certification records for the Matter over Thread locks discussed here. Each row describes one model at the versions and dates stated, not every unit sold.

Dreame NAVO Smart Lock E10
This is the only retrofit claim among the three listings. The record covers motorizing an existing lock without drilling or modifications, and Matter over Thread support. It does not state which cylinders, thumb-turns, or door thicknesses the unit accepts, so treat the claim as the starting point for a fit check rather than its conclusion.
Nuki Smart Lock (4th Generation)
The listing names manual operation alongside Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Matter over Thread. The manual operation it names is a useful reminder that a physical path into the home is part of the product, but the listing does not describe how the unit mounts to a door, so the mechanical fit check still applies.

- 【Auto Lock & Do Not Disturb Mode】Thanks to the built-in gyroscope inside the lock, the auto-lock feature locks the door for you after you close it. Alternatively, you can disable this feature and leave the door always open. Also, the Do Not Disturb mode can mute the door lock sounds within a certain period of time, to avoid affecting your family’s sleep when you get back home late.
- 【A Durable and Secure Biometric door Lock with Long Battery Life】 The U100 is powered by 4 AA 1.5V batteries (included) and has a long battery life of up to 8 months. Also, a USB-C port for emergency charging is available. The lock body made of zinc alloy has an IP65 rating and complies with the same safety standard as BHMA Level 3. It’s capable of withstanding temperatures ranging from -31°F to 151°F. Your sensitive data (e.g., fingerprints) is stored locally and fully AES encrypted.
ULTRALOQ Smart Lock
The record confirms Matter over Thread with a Thread transport interface and specification version 1.4. It does not establish that the model is a retrofit design, so read it as a Thread lock comparison rather than a retrofit option.
Retrofit or full replacement: a decision sequence
A retrofit makes sense when the existing lock and door can accept an actuator and you want motorized control without changing the door hardware. If they cannot, a full replacement lock is the other route. Work through these checks in order before you buy.

- Inspect the existing lock. Note the bolt type, cylinder, inside turn, and door thickness. Compare them with the manufacturer’s installation documentation for the exact model and region. If that documentation is not published for your model, treat the fit as unverified.
- Confirm a Thread Border Router. Check your hub’s specification for Thread Border Router support. Thread devices reach the home network through a border router, so without one a Thread lock has no route into your network.
- Check the controlling platform. Confirm that the platform you use supports the Door Lock features you plan to use, such as the credential types and events you need.
- Test the fallback path. Confirm the lock can be opened by key or thumb-turn, as described in the power section below.
- Verify the version. Match the firmware and regional version on the product you are buying against the certification record you relied on.
Manual fallback, power, and battery life
Manual fallback is the part of the design you can test before you rely on it. Confirm that the key or thumb-turn opens the door when the battery is flat or the hub is offline. The public certification records reviewed here do not establish how any listed model behaves during a power loss or network outage, so read the manufacturer’s manual for the model you choose.
Battery life follows the same pattern. The Matter Retail Messaging Guide makes a qualitative battery-life statement but gives no measured figure, and the records do not state test conditions for the listed models. Treat battery claims as unquantified until a manufacturer publishes its conditions.
Reading vendor case studies
Thread Group’s Level case study includes the line “Technology should blend into your home, not stand out. With Thread, Level locks deliver advanced connectivity while remaining sleek and refined.” The PDF does not name an individual speaker, so attribute the quotation to the case study itself. Its claims about reliability, security, and efficiency are vendor-reported and should be read as the vendor’s position rather than independent measurement.

What certification does not settle
- Security: a certification listing is not a security audit. None of the listings above includes audit results, so resistance to picking, forced entry, or network attack is not established here.
- Availability: a listing records what was certified and when. It does not show current stock, pricing, or regional retail availability.
- Independent performance: no independent comparative testing of these three models is cited in this article.
