“Gemini as the Google Assistant is a disaster” is the title of a Reddit discussion, not a measured verdict on Android users’ experience. The complaints visible there concern practical voice tasks—such as playing music, calling contacts, controlling devices, and using commands in a car—but they are individual reports, not proof that Gemini fails those tasks generally. Google documents many Android assistant actions for Gemini, while also moving toward ending Google Assistant access on mobile devices.
Why are users calling Gemini a disaster?
For many people, a phone assistant is a tool for quick, familiar commands: ask for a call, start music, set a timer, or control a connected device. The Reddit discussion titled “Gemini as the Google Assistant is a disaster” reflects frustration with whether Gemini handles those everyday requests as expected. Search-result excerpts show commenters asking about music playback, contact calls, device controls, and voice commands in a car. Those are user reports, not independently verified failures.
The distinction matters: the discussion does not establish how often Gemini has trouble, whether the same commands work for other users, or whether Gemini is less reliable overall than Google Assistant. The available sources include no representative survey, failure rate, or controlled comparison. A strong reaction in a thread can explain what some people find frustrating, but it cannot stand in for a population-wide measure.
What can Gemini do on an Android phone?
Google’s Device assistance documentation lists actions Gemini can perform on Android, including managing alarms and timers, opening apps, reading and replying to notifications, controlling media, and changing supported device settings. The listed examples also include changing certain settings, adjusting volume, taking a photo or screenshot, and powering off the device.

These documented capabilities describe supported actions; they do not guarantee that every command works identically on every phone, account, app, or configuration. Google notes that some actions require permissions or settings to be enabled. Gemini’s availability and options can also depend on language, location, account, and device eligibility. Check the current Gemini mobile app setup and eligibility guidance and your device’s settings for what is available to you.
Can you switch back to Google Assistant?
Google’s Android guidance for managing or deleting Gemini describes switching from Gemini to Google Assistant in the Gemini app, and changing or removing the default digital assistant in Android settings. The exact steps vary by device. Deleting the Gemini app does not necessarily remove Gemini as the default assistant, so uninstalling it alone may not change which assistant responds.

That guidance must be read alongside Google’s later transition announcement. On August 6, 2026, Google Assistant Community Manager Nandini Thakur said mobile Assistant access would begin to be removed on September 3, 2026, with the staged rollout expected to take a few weeks to reach everyone. The announcement states that once access has been removed, users will no longer be able to use or switch back to Assistant on the phone, tablet, or paired devices covered by the change. As a result, the switch-back option may depend on your device and whether the rollout has reached you.
Which devices are affected by Google’s transition?
Google’s August 6, 2026 transition announcement says the mobile change also affects watches running Wear OS, compatible headphones or earbuds, and Android Auto when projected from a user’s phone. It distinguishes those from cars with Google built-in, where Google says Assistant will continue to function beyond September 3, 2026.

The announcement says Google Nest and Home speakers and displays, along with other Google Assistant-enabled speakers and displays, are not affected by this transition. Google’s Gemini mobile-app guidance likewise distinguishes the mobile assistant from Assistant on products such as smart displays, smart speakers, TVs, cars, and Pixel Tablets. The effect therefore depends on the product and how it connects; this is not a blanket replacement of Assistant on every Google device.

There is no controlled comparison in the cited sources that establishes which assistant is faster or more reliable overall. If you are deciding whether Gemini suits you, assess the commands you actually use rather than relying on either a thread’s strongest complaint or a feature list.
