Yes, but the clearest evidence is local. In 2026, commercial unmanned logistics vehicles in Shenzhen have been running on approved nighttime routes to move parcels, transfer returned mail, and restock logistics nodes after dark. Reporting does not show that night access works the same way across China, and the efficiency figures in circulation come from operators and local media rather than independent audits.
What these vehicles are
The machines in this story are road-going commercial logistics vehicles, not the small sidewalk robots that deliver takeaway food or the home devices sold to consumers. Reporting uses several overlapping labels: “unmanned delivery vehicles,” “functional unmanned vehicles,” and “autonomous delivery vehicles.” They are larger and operationally different from sidewalk robots, and they are run by logistics companies and postal operators, not by individual customers.
Where it is happening: Shenzhen
Shenzhen is the best-documented case so far. Municipal and operator reporting describes routes linking Pingshan and Longgang, and a route from a Futian warehouse to a business location in Luohu. Shenzhen reported that nighttime road access for these vehicles was first permitted in March 2026. Nothing in the available reporting shows that other Chinese cities have opened comparable night access, so it should not be assumed that the Shenzhen model applies elsewhere.

What the night work consists of
Returned and exchanged parcel transfers
China Post reported that on June 3, 2026, an unmanned delivery vehicle left the Biling postal collection and delivery office in Pingshan at 7:30 p.m. carrying mail and reached a parcel sorting center about 30 minutes later. According to the report, the night runs move returned and exchanged parcels, which helps bridge differences in when postal workers finish their rounds and supports night collection work.

Warehouse replenishment and node-to-node freight
Shenzhen municipal reporting describes a JD Logistics vehicle that left a Pingshan grid station at 10 p.m. on a trip of roughly 50 kilometers to Longgang, lasting about four hours. A Neolix vehicle was described moving parcels between a Futian warehouse and a Luohu business location. The city presents these runs as a way to use roads that carry less traffic at night and to support freight movement around the clock. These are reported examples and policy rationales. They are not an independent study of congestion or productivity.
Cross-district movement between logistics nodes
The common thread across these examples is movement between nodes, such as a grid station, a sorting center, a warehouse, and a business site, rather than door-to-door delivery to households. Reporting does not describe household last-mile drops being handled at night by these vehicles.

The figures, and what each one measures
The numbers below come from different sources, dates, and scopes. They should be read individually and attributed, not added together or treated as a single current total.
| Source and date | Scope | Figure reported | Caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| China Post, June 2026 | Shenzhen citywide, at publication | 65 unmanned vehicles deployed; 167 approved operating routes | Snapshot at publication, not a live citywide total |
| China Post, June 2026 | Pingshan district | 12 vehicles in use across direct delivery, grid transfer, and inter-office transport; about 4,000 mail pieces transported; three to four operating hours per vehicle per day | Operator-reported; the report does not say whether the mail volume is a daily or cumulative figure |
| Shenzhen News, April 23, 2026 | Two approved nighttime routes linking Pingshan and Longgang (one JD Logistics vehicle) | Daily operating time rose from 12 to 24 hours; average trips rose from three to five; per-vehicle operating cost fell about 20% | Figures as stated in one local article; no independent audit or primary dataset was located to confirm the before-and-after comparison |
| Amazing Shenzhen, July 16, 2026 | Shenzhen nighttime road access since March 2026 | 331 nighttime routes and more than 100 vehicles after three months; more than 40,000 kilometers of nighttime mileage in June | Different date and likely different scope from the China Post and Shenzhen News counts; route totals should not be combined with them without reconciling scope |
| Henan provincial government English-language portal, 2025 | National estimate | More than 6,000 autonomous delivery vehicles in operation by the end of 2024 | A government-hosted estimate, not a verified current national census; no 2026 national figure was located |
Two points matter most when reading this table. First, the 167 routes in the China Post figure and the 331 routes in the Amazing Shenzhen figure are not directly comparable: they come from different months and may count routes differently. Second, the Shenzhen News cost and trip figures describe one JD Logistics vehicle on two routes, and the report does not give a comparable cost per delivery for any operator.

How night access is permitted and supervised
Night operation depends on approval, not just on the vehicle. The available reporting describes the following conditions:
- Approved routes: vehicles run on specific approved routes, and Shenzhen reported 167 approved operating routes in mid-2026 for its fleet.
- Traceable safety responsibility: the municipal trial framework, as described in Amazing Shenzhen’s July 2026 report, requires that responsibility for safety be traceable.
- Vehicle requirements: the same report describes low-noise operation, reflective markings, and compliant lighting.
- Digital supervision: the Henan portal states that lawful operation nationally requires road permits, licenses, regulatory compliance, and digital supervision, and attributes related remarks to a former official who referred to State Post Bureau standards.
The full text of the Shenzhen trial rules was not located. The conditions above are the reporting’s description of them, not a complete statement of the legal requirements, and the exact enforcement mechanisms are not documented in the available reporting.

What is not established
- National night access: reporting does not show that night road access is uniform across China, and Shenzhen’s trial should not be treated as national policy.
- Safety performance: no independently audited safety rate for these vehicles was found, so claims about relative safety cannot be checked.
- Consistent economics: no comparable cost per delivery across operators was reported, and the cost reduction cited for JD Logistics comes from a single local article.
- Full impact on traffic: the claim that night runs use underused roads is a policy rationale stated by the city; no independent measurement of congestion effects was found.
How to read future reports
When a new figure appears, check four things before comparing it with those above: the date it describes, whether it covers one district or the whole city, whether it counts routes or vehicles, and whether the publisher is the operator, the local government, or an independent party. Operator and local-government figures are useful for showing that the system runs, but they are the weakest basis for comparing efficiency across companies.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Direct quotations from named officials were not available with enough primary-source context to reproduce, so the statements above are attributed paraphrases of the reporting.
The result is a real but narrow picture: in Shenzhen, commercial unmanned logistics vehicles are operating approved night routes and moving parcels and freight between logistics nodes, with figures that are dated, partly operator-reported, and not yet independently verified.
