National Institute of Technology Rourkela (NIT Rourkela) says 29 of its faculty members featured in the 2026 World’s Top 2% Scientists list, alongside one research graduate. The report separately says 19 researchers appeared in the career-long category. These are distinct counts, not a single total of faculty members. [Prameya News, October 8, 2026]

What the NIT Rourkela announcement says

The October 8, 2026 report attributes 29 entries to NIT Rourkela faculty and mentions one research graduate separately. It also reports 19 researchers in the career-long category. Because the report does not provide a complete roster in the retrieved text, it is not possible to verify individual names or determine each person’s category from those figures alone.

NIT Rourkela Director Prof. K. Umamaheshwar Rao called the recognition a proud moment for the institute and said it reflected the quality, consistency and global relevance of its research. The report identifies researchers across areas including life sciences, materials and metallurgical engineering, mathematics, chemical engineering, biotechnology and medical engineering, humanities and social sciences, ceramic engineering, food process engineering, electronics and communication engineering, physics and astronomy, civil engineering, and mining engineering. It does not give a full list of names, individual scores, or each researcher’s subfield. [Prameya News]

What “Top 2% Scientists” means

The list is based on Elsevier’s “Updated science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators,” associated with Stanford professor John P. A. Ioannidis. In version 9, inclusion is based on either ranking among the top 100,000 researchers by composite c-score—with and without self-citations—or reaching at least the 2% percentile threshold in a subfield. The database uses indicators that include citations, h-index, co-authorship-adjusted hm-index, citations by authorship position, and c-score. [Elsevier version 9 dataset]

This is a citation-impact classification, not a general award or a complete assessment of research quality. Elsevier says that a researcher’s absence from a particular version means the c-score did not meet that version’s inclusion threshold; it does not establish that the person’s work is poor. Which years the 2026 edition measures

The “2026” release does not measure citations received during 2026. Its Scopus author-profile snapshot is dated August 1, 2026. The single-year category counts citations received during calendar year 2025, while the career-long measures are updated through the end of 2025. The database classifies researchers across 20 scientific fields and 174 subfields. [Elsevier version 9 dataset]

How the count compares with an earlier NIT Rourkela announcement

A 2025 announcement about the 2024-impact-year release reported 35 scientists overall: 33 faculty members and two PhD scholars. It said 29 faculty were in the single-year category, 17 faculty were in the career-long category, and 13 faculty appeared in both. Those figures describe a different data year and release, so the matching figure of 29 is not evidence that the number stayed unchanged. [Odisha Diary, 2025]
