Use a full-page screenshot when reviewers need to see a page’s visual layout or document a rendering bug; use a PDF when they need selectable text, pagination, or a file that prints easily. For one-off captures, use the browser. For repeatable captures, Chrome Headless or Playwright can automate the job.
Choose the right format for the review

These are practical choices, not universal rules: the best artifact depends on what the reviewer needs to assess.
Prepare the page before capturing it
- Open the exact documentation URL and confirm that it is the correct version of the page.
- Set the page to the state reviewers need: expand relevant sections, select the right tab, dismiss obstructing UI if appropriate, and position any content that must be visible.
- For a screenshot, choose whether the evidence should be the current viewport or the entire scrollable page. Use a controlled viewport when the exact screen layout matters.
- For a PDF, expect print rendering to affect the result. Check page breaks, images, colors, and other relevant content in the exported file.
- Open the saved artifact and verify it before sending it for review.
Capture a screenshot or PDF with Chrome Headless
Chrome Headless documents command-line options for screenshots and PDF export. The following examples use a placeholder documentation URL; replace it with the page you need. Check the flags supported by your installed Chrome version because command-line options can change.
Save a screenshot
chrome --headless --screenshot=docs.png --window-size=1440,1000 --timeout=5000 "https://example.com/docs/"--window-size sets the screenshot viewport dimensions, while --timeout caps the wait before capture. The example uses a five-second timeout; adjust it for the page and environment rather than treating it as a universal load time. A viewport screenshot is not necessarily a full-page capture, so check the saved image and use a method that explicitly supports full-page capture if you need the entire document.

Save a PDF
chrome --headless --print-to-pdf=docs.pdf --no-pdf-header-footer "https://example.com/docs/"Chrome documents --print-to-pdf and a flag for omitting print headers and footers. Confirm the exact flag name supported by your Chrome release; the Chrome documentation notes that an earlier flag name was replaced.
Automate captures with Playwright
Playwright can capture the full scrollable page or an individual element. Its PDF export uses print CSS media by default, so the exported document may differ from the screen rendering.

The viewport controls the browser layout before capture; it does not limit the full-page screenshot to that height. printBackground: true asks PDF export to include background graphics when the page’s print styles allow them.

Make the PDF use screen styling
If reviewers need a PDF closer to the on-screen appearance, emulate screen media before generating it:

Capture a specific element
When the review concerns one code sample, diagram, or content block, capture that element rather than the whole page:

Check the artifact and troubleshoot common problems
- The screenshot cuts off the page: A viewport capture only shows the visible browser area. Use Playwright’s
fullPage: truefor a full-page image, or capture the relevant element. - The PDF looks different from the browser: Playwright uses print CSS media for
page.pdf()by default. Trypage.emulateMedia({ media: 'screen' })before PDF generation, then inspect the output. - The page is missing content: Confirm the URL and page state, then allow enough time for the page to load. Chrome Headless’s
--timeoutbounds its wait; Playwright’s navigation timeout can be adjusted. A capture tool cannot guarantee that a site has finished rendering its own delayed or interactive content. - An image, tab, or expandable section is absent: Put the page into the required state before capture. Check whether the content only appears after scrolling, selecting a tab, or expanding a section.
- Chrome rejects a command-line flag: Verify the option name against documentation for the installed Chrome version. Flag names may change.
- A screenshot does not answer a text or structure question: Use the page’s accessible or structural information as well. Playwright distinguishes visual screenshots from accessibility snapshots for inspecting structure and text.

Review visual evidence with the right level of context
Include the artifact and the exact page URL with your review request. For visual issues, note the viewport and whether the capture is full-page or element-only; for PDF feedback, point reviewers to the relevant page or section. If the question is about text or page structure rather than appearance, include a structural inspection instead of relying on an image alone.
