2XKO’s remaining development team built Sett in six months after Riot’s February 2026 layoffs, according to a statement attributed to game editor-in-chief Ben “Draggles” Forbes by Insider Gaming. Forbes reportedly said the team did not know until around August whether it could release him. Riot has confirmed the team reduction, but its official updates do not independently verify the six-month development timeline.
What Forbes reportedly said about Sett’s development
In its October 8, 2026 report, Insider Gaming attributed the timeline to Forbes, 2XKO’s editor-in-chief. The report says work on Sett began after the February layoffs and that the team built him in six months. It also quotes Forbes saying that until around August, the team did not know whether it would be able to release the champion.
That makes the six-month figure an attributed account, not a timeline independently confirmed in the Riot statements available here. The report links to social posts, but the quoted statements have not been verified against an original Riot development post in the cited material.

February 2026: a smaller 2XKO team
Riot confirmed a team reduction in its February 2026 update on 2XKO. Executive producer Tom Cannon said the game had resonated with a passionate core audience, but its overall momentum had not reached the level needed to support a team of that size long term. Riot did not publish a verified post-layoff headcount in that update, so “remaining team” should not be taken to mean a known number of developers.

The update also said affected employees would receive support, including a minimum of six months’ notice pay and severance if an internal opportunity was not available. That employment provision is separate from the reported six-month production timeline for Sett.
January to August: plans changed
Riot’s January 29, 2026 development update, “2XKO in 2026,” discussed planned work on duo play, core gameplay, community spaces, and competitive support. It was published before Riot’s later announcement that active development would end, so it describes plans at that earlier point rather than a promise that every item would ship.

On August 20, Riot announced that active development would conclude at the end of 2026. The company said servers would remain online beyond 2026 and outlined remaining work, including content, improvements, two announced champions, and a final bug-fix patch planned for December.
What the six-month timeline does—and does not—show
If Forbes’s account is accurate, the timeline describes the team’s reported work to build Sett amid uncertainty about whether he could be released. It does not establish a general production benchmark for fighting-game characters: the cited sources provide no independent study or comparable character-development timelines. Nor does it show that every part of Sett’s development began only after the layoffs; the report’s attributed wording is that building him started afterward.

The distinction matters because Riot’s statements establish the staffing change and later roadmap decision, while the specific Sett schedule comes from secondary reporting. It would be inaccurate to present the six months as a Riot-confirmed production statistic or infer an exact team size from it.

Riot says 2XKO will remain free to download on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S after active development ends. Ending active development does not mean the game’s servers will shut down at the end of 2026; Riot has said they will remain online beyond that date.
