Android Authority’s reader poll found a close split over Android Auto’s wavy media progress bar: 53% of more than 1,300 voters preferred the wave, while 47% favored the classic straight line. That is a narrow preference among the outlet’s readers—not a representative measure of what all Android Auto users think.
What the poll found
Android Authority asked readers, “Do you like the wavy progress bar on Android Auto’s media player?” In its 2026 poll, 53% favored the wavy design and 47% preferred the straight line. The result gives the wavy bar a slight edge, but the six-point gap shows how evenly divided the respondents were.
The poll does not describe its sampling method or respondents’ demographics, and it provides no margin of error. It therefore cannot establish how Android Auto users as a whole feel about the design.

What changed in Android Auto
The wavy indicator is presented as part of Google’s broader Material 3 Expressive design language. Android Authority also reported that the bar had reverted to a straight line for some users playing music through Spotify in full-screen mode the previous month. The report does not identify the cause, the affected app or system versions, or the scale of the behavior; it does not establish that Spotify caused the change or that Google deliberately rolled it back.

Why opinions differ
Some comments reported by Android Authority welcomed the visual treatment: Rcastles wrote, “Long live the wave.” Others objected to it; Wvm2nd called it “ridiculous,” while Billy Simms wrote, “Make it FUNCTIONAL, not PRETTY.” These comments illustrate contrasting reactions, not a measured consensus or a structured study of user sentiment.
Does the wave work better than the straight bar?
The poll measures preference for appearance, not usability. It supplies no testing showing that either design is easier to read, safer to use, or more functional while driving. The comments raise the question of function versus polish, but they do not establish a performance difference between the two bars.
