An Apple TV box is Apple’s small streaming device that connects to a television through HDMI and runs tvOS, the operating system that gives you access to the Apple TV app and other supported apps and features. It is a physical product. The name also refers to Apple’s app and subscription service, which are separate offerings, and that overlap is the main source of confusion.
What the box is and what it does
The Apple TV box sits beside your television and does the work of a streaming player: it connects to the internet, runs apps, and sends video and audio to the screen. Apple’s current name for the physical device is Apple TV 4K. “Apple TV box” is the plain-language description most people mean when they ask what the device is.
Because the box is only the hardware, it does nothing useful on its own. Its value depends on the apps and content you access through it, and those are governed by separate terms.

- The Apple TV box is the hardware described above, sold as Apple TV 4K.
- The Apple TV app is software for watching Apple TV content and other supported video. It is not the box.
- The Apple TV subscription service is a paid offering from Apple. Owning a box does not mean you have a subscription, and buying a subscription does not mean you have a box.
When a reader asks “what is an Apple TV box?”, the answer is about the device, not about which subscription to buy.

What you need to use one
Apple’s product specifications list the following requirements for using the box:
- A television with an HDMI input. The box connects over HDMI. Apple states that an HDMI cable is required and is sold separately, so it is not included in the box.
- An internet connection. Online content requires wireless internet or a broadband connection. Depending on the model and configuration, the box connects over Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Ethernet is only available on models that include an Ethernet port.
- A 4K and HDR television for 4K HDR playback. Apple says a 4K and HDR television is required to stream 4K and HDR content. A standard HD television will still display picture, but not 4K HDR.
- An Apple Account for purchases, rentals and Home Sharing. Apple’s specifications say these features require an Apple Account. Watching many apps does not require buying or renting anything first, but each app’s availability and terms are set by that app’s provider.
- A remote. The box is controlled with the Siri Remote, covered below.
Models and generations
Apple has released more than one generation of the Apple TV 4K. Apple’s technical specifications page for the third-generation model says it was introduced in 2022. Apple also publishes a current Apple TV 4K specifications page with its present feature and requirements list. The table below uses the third-generation figures as the example because they are the ones Apple publishes with exact storage and connectivity details.

| Comparison point | What Apple’s third-generation specifications show | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Generation and features | Introduced 2022; features depend on tvOS version and hardware | Newer tvOS features may not run on older hardware |
| Connectivity | Wi-Fi model, and a Wi-Fi plus Ethernet model | Ethernet is only on the Wi-Fi plus Ethernet configuration |
| Storage | 64 GB on the Wi-Fi model; 128 GB on the Wi-Fi plus Ethernet model | These figures apply to this generation only and are not a universal current configuration |
| Television requirements | HDMI connection; 4K and HDR television for 4K HDR streaming | Applies regardless of generation, per Apple’s current specifications |
Apple’s current lineup may include models that are not shown here. Before choosing a model, check Apple’s current Apple TV 4K specifications page for the exact generation, configuration and tvOS support, and check whether that model is sold in your country, since availability is not confirmed everywhere.

Apple describes the Siri Remote as the control for compatible Apple TV devices. Compatibility depends on the remote generation, so match the remote to the box rather than assuming any remote will work. Apple’s second-generation Siri Remote specifications list compatibility with the Apple TV 4K (first and second generations) and the Apple TV HD. If you need a replacement, confirm the exact model of your box and the remote’s connector before buying.

Feature and region limits
The Apple TV user guide for tvOS 26 describes the software features of the box. Apple cautions that feature details depend on both software and hardware, and that content varies. Apple’s user guide states: “Not all features and content are available in all countries or regions or on all Apple TV hardware models.” A feature described in a guide or product page may therefore not appear on your box, or in your country, even when the box is otherwise working normally.
Apple publishes these guides as its own statements, and the user guide does not name an individual author.
