On a regular Windows 11 PC, Narrator’s image descriptions often sound thin because they use Microsoft’s standard description service. Microsoft reserves its richer, more detailed image descriptions for Copilot+ PCs. Regular PCs still have a second route: Narrator can hand a focused image, or the whole screen, to Copilot and let you ask for a description tailored to what you want to know. Which route you see depends on your hardware, your Windows build, and whether the feature has reached your device yet.
Why the descriptions differ between PCs
Narrator is the screen reader built into Windows 11. Its image-description feature is not one fixed capability. Microsoft documents two different tiers:
- Standard image descriptions on other Windows devices, which rely on online services.
- Rich image descriptions, which Microsoft associates with Copilot+ PCs and which provide a more detailed on-device experience.
That split explains most of the complaint in the title. If your machine is not a Copilot+ PC, you are receiving the standard tier, and Microsoft does not present it as equivalent to the richer output. Microsoft’s own pages also describe Copilot+ hardware support inconsistently. Its FAQ on rich image descriptions refers to Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs, while later Narrator documentation says support has extended to AMD- and Intel-powered Copilot+ PCs. The safest reading is that rich descriptions are tied to Copilot+ hardware, and the exact list of supported chips may change between updates.
Three ways to get a description
The table below compares the paths as Microsoft’s documentation currently describes them. Where a detail is not stated in the material, the cell says so.

- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
| Path | What produces the description | Hardware requirement | What you control |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard image descriptions | Online services | Any Windows 11 PC with the setting enabled | Turn the feature on or off in Narrator settings |
| Rich image descriptions | On-device models (Microsoft describes the experience as more detailed) | Copilot+ PC; Microsoft’s FAQ and later Narrator guidance name different chip families, so check your device’s current eligibility | Model download must complete before first use; progress is shown in Windows Update |
| Copilot handoff | Copilot, which receives the image only after you choose to describe it | Windows 11 devices generally; rollout timing is not stated for every configuration | You decide whether to send the focused image or the full screen, and you can write your own question |
Check the settings first
Before concluding that a description is poor, confirm that the feature is active.
- Open Settings, then go to Accessibility, then Narrator.
- Confirm that Get image descriptions, page titles, and popular links is turned on.
- Move focus onto the image itself. A description request made while focus sits on surrounding text will not describe the picture.
Using the Copilot route
Microsoft’s 2026 guidance describes a second way to get more context from Narrator on Windows 11 devices. For a focused image, Narrator key+Ctrl+D opens Copilot with that image. For the full screen, Narrator key+Ctrl+S does the same with the whole display. The default Narrator key is Caps Lock or Insert, unless you have changed it in Narrator settings.

Microsoft states in its April 30, 2026 preview update note (KB5083806) that “the image is shared only after you choose to describe it.” That means opening Copilot does not by itself send your screen content. You can then ask a specific question, such as what a chart shows or which item in a product photo is damaged.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsNote that Microsoft’s documentation uses Narrator key+Ctrl+D for two purposes in different places: requesting a description, and opening Copilot for a focused image. Which behavior you see depends on the build and the feature set currently active on your PC. If the shortcut does something unexpected, check the current Narrator help in the Get Help app for your version rather than assuming a fault.

First use of rich descriptions can take time
On Copilot+ PCs, the first use of rich image descriptions requires Narrator to download the models it needs. Microsoft says you can follow the progress in Settings > Windows Update. Leave the PC connected to power and the internet during this step. If you request a description while the download is still running, expect a delay or an incomplete result, and try again once setup finishes.
Troubleshooting weak or wrong descriptions
- Confirm the image has focus and that the image-description setting is on (see the section above).
- If a rich description is still in setup, keep the PC connected and check Windows Update for model download progress. Retry after the download completes.
- Identify which path you are using. A standard description on a regular PC will generally be shorter than a rich description on a Copilot+ PC. If you need more detail, use the Copilot handoff and ask a precise question.
- Check whether the Copilot route is available to you. Microsoft’s release notes describe feature rollouts, and availability for each build and region was not established in the material reviewed. If the option is missing, your update may not have reached your device yet.
- If the output is wrong, treat it as a limitation of the model rather than proof that you gave Narrator a bad input. Microsoft provides thumbs-up and thumbs-down controls on descriptions, and you can send detailed reports through Feedback Hub.
Accuracy limits you should expect
Microsoft’s FAQ on rich image descriptions warns: “This feature may provide inaccurate image description, data in charts or graphs, or emotional inferences.” Treat generated output as a starting point, not a verified fact. Microsoft advises against relying on these descriptions for:

Microsoft says its quality evaluation used a varied set of images and methods, including human expert judgments and automated scoring by language models. The FAQ does not publish a numeric accuracy result, so no percentage can be quoted for how often descriptions are correct.
Does this mean you need a new PC?
Not necessarily. Narrator is built into Windows 11, and the Copilot handoff is documented for Windows 11 devices generally, so a regular PC is not locked out of more detailed descriptions. A Copilot+ PC is relevant only if you specifically want the on-device rich description tier. Before buying for this reason, check the exact model’s current Copilot+ and Windows feature eligibility on the manufacturer’s or Microsoft’s current pages, since the supported hardware list has been revised.

What is established and what is not
- Established: Microsoft separates standard descriptions from rich descriptions, associates rich descriptions with Copilot+ PCs, and documents a Copilot handoff that requires your choice before an image is shared.
- Not established: the exact rollout status for every Windows build, market, and PC configuration, as of today. Microsoft’s documentation shifts over time, so confirm on your own machine.
Check your Windows Update status and the Narrator settings on your PC, since those reflect what your device can actually do.
