Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is out now on Nintendo Switch 2, released September 17, 2026. For your first session, the short answer is to pick the protagonist whose premise appeals to you, follow the tutorial, and spend free time on the activities you enjoy rather than trying to clear everything. Nintendo says the starting choice is not an irreversible fork, so the opening does not need to be perfect.
Nintendo’s official material does not prescribe a fixed order or publish unlock timings. The list below is a set of things to check or try as they become available. If a system has not appeared yet, follow the game’s prompts, since access to menus and activities can depend on story progress.

Choose the protagonist that interests you
- Pick the protagonist whose premise interests you most. Nintendo’s developers say players may begin with whichever protagonist they like. The developer interview is linked in the sources at the end of this guide.
- Don’t plan your route order around efficiency. Nintendo says you can change paths and progress in parallel, and that route order is designed not to create an irreversible choice. Focusing on one story at a time and sampling several in parallel are both supported. Nintendo does not say either approach is faster.
The four routes each have their own activities, covered in the route section below. The official material does not rank any protagonist as the best choice for beginners, so the premise is a reasonable tiebreaker.
Before your first battle
- Follow the tutorial instead of optimizing right away. Nintendo says the game gradually teaches its tactical systems, so there is no need to master everything in the first hour.
- Use turn rewind to test a risky move. Nintendo says a limited number of rewinds lets you try different strategies. Its launch material does not state an exact count, so check the in-game limit when you first use it.
- Read the battle’s special rules before committing to a plan. Nintendo’s launch coverage says battles range from small skirmishes to large encounters, each with specific rules. Checking those rules first is a sensible habit based on that description. It is not an instruction Nintendo gives on screen.
- Treat each unit’s movement and position as a tactical decision. The game is turn-based and played on a grid, so where a unit ends its move matters as much as what it does once it arrives.
- Choose the control style that feels comfortable. The Nintendo UK game page confirms Joy-Con 2 mouse controls and switching between mouse and button controls. Mouse controls are a convenience, not a requirement.
Dagsion: your base for preparation
Nintendo identifies Dagsion as the story’s base and the place for preparation and recruitment. Most of the items below happen there, so it is a good first stop whenever free time opens up.
#1 Best Overall
- Here, order is maintained by the Church of Seiros from its headquarters at Garreg Mach Monastery, home to the Officers Academy, where you’re invited to teach one of its three mighty houses: The Black Eagles, The Blue Lions, and The Golden Deer.
- Which house will you choose?
- As its professor, you must lead your students in class and in tactical RPG battles wrought with strategic, new twists to overcome.
- Walk around Dagsion during free-time sections. The city is where you prepare for what comes next, so it pays to know where things are before you need them.
- Talk to potential allies and look into scouting. Nintendo says you can find mercenary-like allies in Dagsion and scout some characters from other protagonists’ clans.
- Check the training ground when it becomes available. Nintendo’s launch guide names it as a place to hone skills. The official material does not say how much a session raises a stat, so treat it as a place to practice rather than a guaranteed boost.
- Look for Blessings at temples. Nintendo lists temples as the place to level up Blessings.
- Visit the inn for bonds and motivation. Nintendo says inns let you view support conversations and restore motivation. Motivation is used for training and Blessings.
- Check the shops before major battles. Nintendo lists the shopping district among Dagsion’s preparation locations. The official pages do not specify inventory or which purchases are worthwhile, so browse before you spend.
The world map
- Use the world map when you want extra preparation. Nintendo says it offers quests, resources, roaming enemies that give experience, and dungeons with better loot. These are useful when you feel underprepared for the next story battle, but they are not required to progress.
Pace yourself
- Explore at your own pace and skip what does not interest you. In Nintendo’s developer interview, the team says you can visit many places or move the story forward with less exploration. Nintendo’s Kusakihara, Intelligent Systems director, put the design philosophy this way: “The idea of things converging into one is a core concept behind the story, and in terms of gameplay, we believe that everything players experience in the game has value.” That is why repeat routes and side activities are meant to build up rather than feel wasted. Route activities by protagonist
Each protagonist has an activity that is specific to their path. Notice which one you are drawn to, because it shapes what the free time in your route looks like.
Cai: animals and farming
Cai can catch and care for rideable animals and farm.
Rank #2
- Command Fire Emblem: Three Houses characters like Edelgard, Dimitri, and Claude in epic real-time battles
- Play through three distinct storylines set in the Fire Emblem: Three Houses universe, each with a different ending, from the point of view of a new protagonist, Shez.
- Combine the action-packed Warriors-style gameplay with the strategy and style of the Fire Emblem series
- Fight through hordes of enemies with Fire Emblem: Three Houses characters and their distinct abilities
- Use Fire Emblem series mechanics like the weapons triangle, character classes, crests, and battalions to tailor your strategy
Dietrich: combat arts
Dietrich gains and strengthens combat arts by defeating enemies.
Theodora: battalions
Theodora recruits soldiers and uses battalions in battle.
Rank #3
- The Officers Academy is home to three houses: The Black Eagles with house leader Edelgard, The Blue Lions with house leader Dimitri, and The Golden Deer with house leader Claude
- As a professor, lead students in their academic lives and on the battlefield
- A turn-based, tactical RPG that puts new twists on strategic battling
- Freely roam Garreg Mach Monastery and interact with students in a variety of ways to bond with them. In the classroom, tutor your students to help them
- Grow in the skill sets required to become specific classes
Leda: taverns
Leda performs in taverns for rewards or information.
These details come from Nintendo’s developer interview. Because the activities differ by route, a checklist for one protagonist will not match another’s.
Rank #4
- Reawaken as a Divine Dragon and take down a thousand-year-old threat
- Take on turn-based, tactical combat and use Emblem Rings to customize your strategy
- Collect Emblem Rings and use them to summon heroes from past Fire EmblemTM games
- Fire EmblemTM Engage launches on January 20, 2023 alongside Fire Emblem Engage: Divine Edition featuring a steelbook case and art book
Recruit and grow characters without locking in early choices
- Recruit based on interest as well as immediate optimization. Nintendo says you can choose characters who catch your eye, and you can learn what makes an ally appealing by talking to them.
- Keep experimenting with growth and classes. Nintendo’s Direct overview on August 6, 2026 describes five Beginner Classes and more than ten Specialty Classes. The developer interview says character growth rates are visible, so you can see how a unit is developing. An early build is not a permanent mistake.
Do you need to play Three Houses first?
No. Producer Masahiro Higuchi of Intelligent Systems said in Nintendo’s Part 1 developer interview: “We developed the game with the guiding principle that players should be able to fully enjoy it as a standalone title, even if they aren’t familiar with Fire Emblem: Three Houses.” Source: Nintendo, Ask the Developer Vol. 23: Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave — Part 1, September 15, 2026, Nintendo of America.
