Business patch management for Windows comes down to three decisions: which control plane delivers updates to your devices, how updates move through test, pilot and production groups, and how strictly deadlines are enforced. Microsoft documents controls for all three, but each carries different eligibility rules. The right setup depends on your Windows editions, your devices’ join state, your Intune or Autopatch licensing, and how many administrators can watch a rollout.

The sections below follow the order you need to make those decisions. The later sections list the prerequisites, safeguards and recovery controls to check before you enforce anything.

Separate quality updates from feature updates first

Many patching problems begin when routine security updates and operating-system version changes are managed as one thing. Quality updates are the regular servicing updates, typically released monthly. They are cumulative, so installing the latest one brings a device current for the Windows version it already runs. Their payload can include security fixes, non-security improvements and reliability changes. Feature updates move a device to a different Windows version. A feature-update policy names a target version and keeps that target in force until you change or remove the policy.

Attribute Quality updates Feature-update policies
Purpose Keep the current Windows version secure and current Move devices to a chosen Windows version
Cadence Typically monthly; cumulative Not stated; driven by the target version you select
How long the setting holds Each new release supersedes the previous one Until the policy is changed or removed
Deadline control in Intune Independent quality deadline setting Independent feature deadline setting

Keep the two in separate policies and, where possible, separate rings so that a routine security update never turns into an operating-system change.

Choose a management approach

Three approaches are available. They are not always mutually exclusive, but each assumes a different level of cloud dependency and administrative effort.

Axis Windows Update client policies (Group Policy or MDM) Intune update rings Intune with Windows Autopatch orchestration
Eligibility Specified Windows 10 and Windows 11 editions; check the current edition list Intune enrollment and a supported join state Additional license and service requirements apply
Licensing Free service for the specified editions Depends on your Intune licensing Depends on license entitlements
Control over sequencing and approval You define test and pilot groups and decide what is offered You define rings and assign them to test, pilot and production groups Sequential rollout coordinated through Autopatch groups; Microsoft says it uses reliability and compatibility signals
Time from release to enforcement Set by your policy values; no fixed figure stated in Microsoft’s policy reference Deferral, deadline (2 to 30 days) and grace period (0 to 7 days) bounds Set by the Autopatch workflow; see the compliance figures below
Restart and notification experience Shaped by the client update experience settings in the policy Restart settings, active hours, notifications and automatic reboot behavior Not stated in Microsoft’s Autopatch overview for restart behavior
Administrative capacity needed Your team runs rollout, monitoring and reporting Your team creates rings, assignments and monitoring May reduce manual coordination; monitoring and recovery stay with your team

Windows Update client policies

Windows Update client policies are the baseline controls for business Windows update behavior. You configure them with Group Policy or with MDM, including Microsoft Intune. They were formerly known as Windows Update for Business. Microsoft documents them as a free service for specified Windows 10 and Windows 11 editions. The policies determine which updates are offered and shape the client’s update experience, and they allow testing on a subset of devices before a broad deployment.

Choose this route when you want direct policy control and already run your own rollout and reporting practices. Check each device’s edition against Microsoft’s current policy reference first, because a device outside the listed editions is outside this approach’s scope.

Intune update rings

An update ring is a broad policy surface for client-side update behavior. You create separate rings and assign each one to a device group, which is how you build test, pilot and production stages. Each ring carries the timing and experience controls: deferral periods, quality and feature deadlines, grace period, restart settings, active hours, user notifications and automatic reboot behavior. The documented deadline range is 2 to 30 days for quality and feature updates, with a grace period of 0 to 7 days. These are the configurable bounds Intune accepts, not a recommended schedule.

Intune with Windows Autopatch orchestration

Intune can use Windows Autopatch for feature, quality and driver update policy workflows. Autopatch groups coordinate deployment rings and related policies. Microsoft says the service uses sequential rollout along with reliability and compatibility signals to reduce disruption. That can cut coordination work a small team would otherwise do by hand. It does not remove the need to monitor results or to recover from a bad update.

Autopatch-powered features depend on license entitlements and tenant prerequisites, so do not assume every Intune tenant or device qualifies. Check the prerequisites section below against your tenant before you plan around this route.

Stage rollouts by risk and representativeness

Staging is where most risk control happens. Use three distinct audiences, each with a different job. The guidance below is operational practice rather than a group design prescribed by Microsoft.

Test ring

Assign this ring to IT staff devices and a small set of machines that run your most common applications. Its job is to confirm that the update installs, that restarts and sign-in still work, and that core business applications launch. Set its deferral so it receives each release first.

Pilot ring

Assign a sample that represents your fleet across hardware models, installed applications, business functions and user patterns. Representativeness is the point. A pilot made up of the most cooperative users hides the problems production will hit. Keep the pilot running long enough to cover a full working cycle, such as a month-end process, before you widen it.

Production ring

This ring covers the remaining managed devices. Set its deadlines and restart behavior at the level your risk tolerance supports, and start it only after the pilot has reported no blocking problems.

Set up the rings in Intune

  1. Create one device group per stage, and confirm that group membership reflects the test, pilot and production audiences you planned.
  2. In the Intune admin center, create one update ring per stage. Give each ring its own deferral, deadline, grace period and restart values, and set the deferrals so that test receives each release first, pilot second and production last.
  3. Assign each ring to its matching group, then confirm on sample devices that the expected ring applies before the first release.
  4. Hold production until the pilot group has reported no blocking problems over the observation period you agreed in advance.

Set deadlines, grace periods and restart behavior

Setting Documented range or behavior Effect on users
Quality update deadline 2 to 30 days Number of days before the update is enforced
Feature update deadline 2 to 30 days; set independently of the quality deadline Number of days before the feature update is enforced
Grace period 0 to 7 days Additional time after the deadline before enforcement
Automatic restart before the deadline Configurable Restarts can occur without user action, so pair this setting with active hours
Active hours Configurable Keeps restarts out of defined working hours
Notifications Configurable Controls how and when users see update prompts

Short deadlines reduce how long devices remain behind a release. Aggressive enforcement, especially automatic restarts that fall outside active hours, can interrupt work. Choose values from your organization’s risk tolerance and how users work, and review them after the first few release cycles.

Safeguards and holds

Safeguard holds keep eligible devices off feature updates that Microsoft has identified as having known or likely issues. Microsoft documents known-issue safeguards for Windows 10 and Windows 11 feature updates, and likely-issue safeguards for Windows 11 feature updates. A safeguard can withhold an update from a device until the issue is resolved. Autopatch deployments apply the relevant safeguards by default.

When a feature update does not appear on a device that otherwise qualifies, check for a safeguard before troubleshooting the policy. Do not disable safeguards as a general fix. If a specific override seems necessary, first assess the compatibility risk for that device group and follow Microsoft’s current guidance on the override.

Recovery: pause, resume and roll back

Microsoft documents pause, resume and rollback controls for quality and feature updates delivered through update rings. Driver policies support pausing and resuming specific driver updates. Which controls apply depends on the workflow and the update type, so confirm that a control exists for the update you are handling before you plan around it. Rollback should not be treated as a guaranteed undo for every failure.

  1. Pause the affected ring so the update stops advancing to other devices.
  2. Identify the affected devices, the update type, and whether the failure is in a quality update, a feature update or a driver.
  3. If a driver is the cause, pause and resume the specific driver update rather than the whole ring.
  4. If rollback is available for that update type and workflow, apply it to the affected group. If it is not, handle the affected devices under your standard incident process.
  5. Record the device list, the update identifier and the decision made, and keep the ring paused until the cause is understood.

Prerequisites to check before enforcing

  • Intune enrollment for devices managed through any Intune route.
  • A supported Microsoft Entra joined or hybrid joined state. Microsoft Entra registered devices have more limited support for some policy types, so check each policy type against the device’s join state.
  • For policies that use the Autopatch backend: an eligible Windows license, the required diagnostic-data level, the Microsoft Account Sign-In Assistant service available on the device, and access to Microsoft endpoints.
  • For Windows Update client policies: a device running one of the specified Windows 10 or Windows 11 editions.
  • Current requirements verified on Microsoft’s live documentation before rollout, because these requirements change.

Compliance targets in Microsoft’s own figures

  • Windows Autopatch aims for 95% of devices to be compliant by their target compliance date. Microsoft presents this as an aim, not a guarantee or an independently validated result. The target date depends on when content is offered to the device and on the client’s configured installation behavior. The cited Microsoft page does not state a publication year.
  • Microsoft associates a claim of 90% compliance in half the time with hotpatch security updates on eligible devices. Treat it as a Microsoft service statement. Eligibility and configuration matter, and the cited material does not define the baseline for the ‘half the time’ comparison. The cited page does not state a year for this claim either.

Troubleshooting devices that fall behind

Symptom First check Next action
Feature update missing on a device that otherwise qualifies Safeguard hold Follow the safeguard steps above; do not disable the safeguard without a compatibility assessment
Autopatch workflow not reaching a device Autopatch prerequisites listed above Correct the missing prerequisite, then recheck the device’s update status
Policy type not applying to an Entra registered device Policy-type support for registered devices Move the device to a supported join state or use a supported policy type
Ring assignment not reflected on a device Group membership and enrollment status Correct the membership or enrollment, then confirm the assignment again
Problems appear after a release reaches the pilot ring Ring status and reported issues Pause the ring and follow the recovery steps above

What this guide does not cover

This guide covers Microsoft-managed Windows client update controls. It does not describe a Windows Server patching procedure, compare third-party patch-management products, or verify your organization’s licenses, device inventory, risk appetite or application compatibility. Gather that information before you set prescriptive values such as specific deferral periods. Re-check Microsoft’s documentation near your rollout date, because feature availability, Windows support status, license terms and Autopatch defaults change.
