Vexil is a desktop search project by Priya Ranjan Sahu, built with Rust and Tauri, that aims to find local files when you cannot remember their exact names. The author describes it as a local, offline search tool with semantic matching, a global hotkey, and early builds for macOS, Windows, and Linux. The claims below come from the author’s own account, not from independent testing, so this article separates what the author reports from what remains unverified.
The problem Vexil is meant to solve
The author’s starting point is a familiar gap in desktop search. You know a PDF, a code snippet, or a design asset exists somewhere on your machine, but you do not remember its filename. In the author’s words, the search has to work even with a “slightly misspelled keyword,” or when “the file doesn’t exist” under the name you expect. The author describes wanting to find things “if I couldn’t remember the exact filename,” which is the scenario Vexil is built around.
That framing matters because it defines the kind of search being attempted. Vexil is not presented as a replacement for filename search. It is presented as a way to recover files through their contents and surrounding context when the name fails you.

What the author says Vexil searches
The author names three categories as examples of what people lose track of: older PDFs, code snippets, and design assets. The source does not publish a list of supported file types, a maximum index size, or indexing speed figures, so readers should not assume full coverage of every format without testing it on their own folders.

How Vexil is built
The author lists the following stack. The table reflects only what the author reports; it is not a verified architecture diagram.
| Layer | Reported choice | What it does, per the author |
|---|---|---|
| Backend language | Rust | Handles filesystem crawling and indexing |
| Desktop framework | Tauri | Wraps the application as a native desktop app |
| Frontend | React and TypeScript | Provides the search interface |
| Storage | Local SQLite | Holds the index on the local machine |
| Semantic matching | Local embedding models | Supplies context for meaning-based matching without sending private files to an OpenAI server |
Taken together, the stack is a common pattern for local-first desktop tools: a compiled backend for file work, a web-technology interface, and an embedded database. The stack alone does not tell you how well the search performs, and the source does not provide that data.

The hardest engineering problem: crawling and background indexing
The author identifies cross-platform filesystem crawling as the most difficult part of the project. Two areas are named specifically.
- Crawling across operating systems. The author credits Rust’s
ignoreandnotifycrates with helping, but describes the platform differences as the main challenge. - Indexing without freezing the interface. The author says keeping background indexing from locking the UI required architectural rewrites rather than a small patch.
Readers building similar tools should treat this as the most useful takeaway. Search quality matters, but the author’s account suggests that responsiveness during indexing was the harder design constraint.

Privacy and local processing: what is claimed
The author describes Vexil as completely local and offline, and says the local embedding models are what make semantic context possible without sending private files to an OpenAI server. These are project claims. The article excerpt does not show an independent audit, a network traffic analysis, or a statement about telemetry or update checks, so it is not established whether every file, embedding, or update request stays on the device.
If privacy is a deciding factor for you, check the application’s network behavior yourself on the version you install. Monitoring outbound connections during the first indexing run is a practical test.

Interaction and platforms
The author says Vexil can be triggered from anywhere with a global hotkey. The article reports first release binaries for macOS, Windows, and Linux, and the author’s LinkedIn post repeats the three-platform download claim and links to a download page.

Treat the platform list as the author’s statement from the time of posting.
Best Value
- Mix an audio, music and voice tracks
- Record single or multiple tracks simultaneously
- Intuitive tools to split, trim, join, and many other editing features
- Loaded with audio effects including EQ, compression, reverb, and more.
- Load an audio file and export to all popular audio formats from studio quality wav to high compression formats
What the evidence does not show
- No benchmarks. The author calls the tool “blazingly fast” and says its footprint is “practically nothing,” but no startup time, memory use, binary size, battery impact, or search-accuracy measurement is published in the sources.
- No comparison. There is no controlled comparison with operating-system search, Electron-based apps, or other desktop search tools. Claims that Vexil is faster, lighter, or more accurate than those alternatives are not supported.
- No dated status. The article excerpt does not show a publication year, repository link, license, or maintenance status.
- No independent validation. The LinkedIn post repeats the author’s claims and does not add outside evidence.
How to evaluate Vexil yourself
If you want to test the project against your own needs, a short checklist will tell you more than the claims do.
- Confirm the download source and the version number before installing, since the author’s post links to a download page whose current state is unverified.
- Index a folder you already know well, such as a project directory with code snippets, and search with a deliberately misspelled term.
- Search for a file you know exists under a name you have forgotten, then check whether a filename search would have found it.
- Watch network activity during and after indexing to confirm what leaves the machine.
- Note whether the interface stays responsive while indexing a large folder, since the author identifies that as a core engineering problem.
Those tests answer the questions that matter for a search tool: whether it finds what you actually lose, whether it keeps your files local, and whether it stays usable under load.
Where to read the author’s account
The primary source is the author’s DEV Community article, “I got fed up with desktop search, so I built my own using Rust and Tauri”. The author’s LinkedIn post, “Vexil Desktop Search Engine with Local AI”, summarizes the same product, privacy, and platform claims.
