No single VPN is the best choice for everyone. The 2026 comparisons we drew on point to different winners depending on what you need. TechRadar’s comparison, updated 7 October 2026, names NordVPN its overall pick, Surfshark its lower-cost pick and Proton VPN its privacy-oriented pick. RTINGS divides its recommendations by use case: Mullvad for privacy-first use, NordVPN for streaming, and Proton VPN Free for everyday use without paying.
This guide explains how those rankings were built, what the published test numbers do and do not show, and how to match a provider to your priorities. It summarises third-party tests and reviews. It does not add any new testing of our own.
Where the 2026 rankings agree and where they diverge
Before comparing providers, it helps to know who is saying what and how each source measures it. The most useful sources for this year are:
- TechRadar (comparison updated 7 October 2026): ranks providers overall and assigns a named pick to each category, such as overall, lower-cost and privacy-oriented.
- RTINGS: does not crown a single winner. It recommends services by use case (privacy, budget, free use and streaming) and describes trade-offs within each category.
- Security.org (speed test, January 2026): measures how much each service slows download and upload speeds on the test setup.
- Artifact Security (2026 evaluation, as reported by TechRadar): covered five major providers across five origin regions. It gave NordVPN an overall score of 91.
- Comparitech: scores providers across six categories: security, speed, streaming, ease of use, value and system performance. It uses different measurement cadences for each category and attaches a confidence label to its results.
The practical difference is that TechRadar gives you a single answer, while RTINGS and Comparitech show you where each provider earns or loses points. A provider that tops an overall list can still be the wrong choice if your main concern is streaming or a free plan. Treat any single ranking as one input, and read it alongside the rubric behind it.

Choosing by what you need
Privacy
Proton VPN and Mullvad are the two providers the sources single out for privacy. TechRadar names Proton VPN its privacy-oriented pick. RTINGS names Mullvad its privacy-first option. Mullvad signs up with a generated account number rather than an email-based login, and accepts cash or cryptocurrency payment, which RTINGS highlights as a privacy-relevant feature.
Privacy claims are only as strong as the evidence behind them. RTINGS reports that audit scope and broader privacy practices differ between providers, so a published audit should be read for what it actually covers. The steps below explain how to check that yourself.
Streaming
RTINGS names NordVPN its streaming pick, and TechRadar says Surfshark unblocks streaming services less reliably than NordVPN. Streaming access is the least stable part of any VPN comparison. Services change their detection methods, so a provider that works today may not work next month. Any streaming claim should carry the test date and the region tested. Even then, it is a snapshot, not a guarantee.

Value
Surfshark is TechRadar’s lower-cost pick. Its 7 October 2026 comparison lists a starting price of $2.49 per month, billed as $67.23 upfront. The monthly figure is an equivalent, not a monthly charge. Compare the upfront total with your own usage period, and check the terms before you pay (see the checklist below).
Free use
RTINGS recommends Proton VPN Free for everyday use without a subscription. According to RTINGS, its free version has unlimited usage, but it allows only one device at a time and uses randomised server selection. Both RTINGS and TechRadar say streaming and torrenting need the paid plan. If you only need basic protection on one device, the free tier may be enough. If you need streaming or several devices, plan on paying.
Device coverage
Simultaneous-connection limits matter more than most reviews suggest. RTINGS reports that Mullvad allows up to five simultaneous connections. Check the limit for each provider against the number of phones, laptops and routers you want to protect before you subscribe.

What the speed numbers mean
Speed results are only useful when you know who ran the test, when, and against what baseline. Two 2026 sources offer the most detail.
Security.org speed test (January 2026)
- NordVPN: download and upload slowdowns did not exceed six percent in Security.org’s test.
- Proton VPN: a download slowdown of around eight percent and an upload slowdown of around four percent.
- Proton VPN’s VPN Accelerator: Security.org reports speed increases of up to 50 percent on distant servers in its tests.
These are the results of one test run in January 2026. They are not guaranteed performance on your network, your device or your distance from a server.
Artifact Security evaluation (2026, as reported by TechRadar)
- Average Windows download speed: 271.9 Mbps.
- Peak download median on Windows: 568.4 Mbps.
- Average time to establish a working tunnel: 1.8 seconds, with a 98 percent success rate.
The report describes its routes as “55 route-pinned highways” across five origin regions. TechRadar’s summary presents these figures as headline averages, not as one provider’s guaranteed speed. Use them to compare the rough scale of performance, not to predict your own connection.

NordVPN’s reaction to the test results is also worth noting. TechRadar quotes Marijus Briedis, chief technology officer at NordVPN, saying: “These results tell us the product is doing its job where it matters.” That is the vendor’s response to the results, not independent validation of them.

A low headline price can hide the real cost. Before you buy, confirm each of the following on the provider’s checkout page:

- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Checking a privacy claim yourself
- Read the provider’s privacy policy and note what it says it collects, such as connection timestamps, IP addresses or account details.
- Find any independent audit the provider publishes. Note the auditing firm, the period covered and the systems included.
- Check whether the audit covers the apps you will use, or only a narrower claim, such as the server infrastructure or a specific no-logs statement.
- Compare the audit date with the date of the latest app release. An older audit may not reflect current software.
- Keep in mind that an audit confirms a defined claim. It does not prove every company practice.
Making the choice
Start with the one priority that matters most to you. If it is privacy, shortlist Proton VPN and Mullvad and compare their audit scope and device limits. If it is streaming, shortlist NordVPN and test your own services during a trial or refund window. If it is value, compare the upfront total and renewal price for Surfshark against alternatives. If you only need basic protection on one device, Proton VPN Free is worth trying first. Whatever you choose, confirm the current price, plan terms and streaming access on the provider’s own site before you pay.
