No single AI math solver is the best for every homework problem. The right choice depends on how you enter the problem (camera, typing, or drawing), how much step-by-step explanation you need, and how advanced the math is. For a photo of a school worksheet, Photomath is the most clearly documented fit. For a precisely specified calculation or advanced STEM problem, Wolfram|Alpha is the stronger choice. For typed algebra and higher math, Symbolab is a common candidate, and for graphs and geometry, GeoGebra is the better tool.

This guide is a fit-based selection, not a measured accuracy contest. We did not find an independent, uniform benchmark that measures accuracy or speed across these tools, so this guide does not publish accuracy percentages. Accuracy depends on the problem, how it was entered, and the tool’s reading of it.

What “AI” means for these tools

Not every tool in this category is generative AI, and the difference affects what you should expect from it. Photomath describes its method as image recognition followed by a problem-solving algorithm. Wolfram|Alpha describes itself as a computational knowledge engine: it computes answers from its knowledgebase rather than returning a list of web links. Both are useful for homework, but they fail in different ways. A recognition tool can misread the problem; a computational engine can answer a question you did not mean to ask if the input is ambiguous.

Quick picks by task

The table compares the tools covered in this guide. Prices are vendor-reported figures and change often, so confirm them on the vendor’s current page or in your app store before paying. Cells marked “Not stated” mean the reviewed sources did not establish that detail, not that the feature is absent.

Tool-by-tool notes

Photomath: the strongest documented pick for scanned homework

Photomath’s official site describes scanning a problem, getting an exact-problem solution, and seeing multiple methods. That combination makes it the most practical option when your problem is on paper and you want to see how it is worked. The free tier gives you the core generated steps, so you can use it without paying for basic explanations. The paid tier is for tutorials and hints. Photomath’s official help page says problem images are processed on cloud servers, which matters if you are working with material your school has restrictions on.

Photomath is most reliable when the photo is sharp and the whole problem is in frame. Check the recognized expression before you read the answer, because a misread sign or exponent produces a correct solution to the wrong problem.

Wolfram|Alpha: computation and advanced STEM

Wolfram|Alpha is best when the question is precise: an integral with defined limits, a system of equations, a unit conversion, or a physics calculation with stated values. Its FAQ describes it as a computational knowledge engine, so it is designed to compute rather than explain a method in tutoring-style steps. Use it to check a result or to get a computation that a calculator cannot handle, rather than as a replacement for learning the method. Personal noncommercial use is free; enhanced features are part of Pro.

Symbolab: algebra and higher math

A 2026 comparison describes Symbolab as providing step-by-step calculations and tools for derivatives, integrals, graphing, and other higher mathematics. It is a sensible candidate when your work is in algebra, calculus, or similar topics and you want to compare your steps with a worked sequence. Some of its features require a subscription, so confirm which steps you can see on the free tier before you rely on it for a graded assignment. Input methods for Symbolab are not established in the reviewed sources, so check the current app before you buy.

Mathway: quick multi-topic solving

Mathway covers a wide range of subjects, including algebra, calculus, statistics, and trigonometry, and comparison sources list photo input. It is useful when you have several different types of problems and want quick answers across topics. The trade-off is depth: one 2026 comparison says detailed steps require paid access, so a free answer may not show you the method you need for the exam.

GeoGebra Calculator Suite: graphs and geometry

GeoGebra is a visualization choice, not a camera-based homework scanner. A 2026 roundup identifies its strengths as graphing, geometry, regression, calculus visualization, and 2D and 3D exploration. Use it when the question is about the shape of a function, a construction, or how a parameter changes a graph. Confirm the current scope on GeoGebra’s own site, because the product set changes.

Microsoft Math Solver: check current availability first

Microsoft’s January 2020 announcement described photo, draw, and type input, step guidance, interactive graphs, worksheets, and video tutorials. This guide could not confirm that all of these features are still offered today, so do not assume they are available. Check Microsoft’s current site before you rely on it.

Gauth: an assistant for mixed school subjects

A 2026 comparison describes Gauth as a photo-based tool that explains questions across math and other school subjects. Pricing and free-tier limits in the table come from a comparison written by the vendor, so treat them as a starting point and confirm them in the app. If you mainly need math, a narrower tool may give you more depth for the same money.

Tools considered but not ranked

Google Lens homework mode, ChatGPT, Maple Calculator, and Khan Academy with Khanmigo are reasonable to consider, but the current, independent information available for this guide is not enough to recommend them with confidence. They are left out of the picks above rather than ranked on assumptions. If one of them fits your class or device, test it on a problem you already know the answer to before you depend on it.

Using a solver without skipping the learning

A solver gives you an answer quickly, but the homework is for building the method. This sequence keeps the tool useful for learning:

  1. Attempt the problem on paper first, writing each line of your work.
  2. Enter the problem and check the tool’s reading of it before looking at the answer.
  3. Find the first line where your work and the solver’s steps differ, and work out why.
  4. Close the solver and solve a similar problem with different numbers.
  5. If you still cannot do the similar problem, ask a teacher or use a structured tutorial. This sequence is editorial advice, not a measured learning result.

Checks before you trust an answer

  • Confirm the recognized problem. Read the parsed expression against the original page, especially signs, fractions, parentheses, and exponents.
  • Substitute the answer back in. For equations, plug the result into the original problem; for graphs, check a point or two by hand.
  • Check the domain or window. Graph outputs depend on the viewing window and on any restrictions in the problem.
  • Use a second method for important results. A computational engine such as Wolfram|Alpha is useful for checking a result you worked out yourself.
  • Confirm the plan and region. Prices and features vary by app store and country, and a feature shown on a vendor page may be behind a paywall in your version.

Free and paid access in practice

Yes, there are genuinely free options, but they have limits. Photomath’s core generated steps are free, and Wolfram|Alpha’s personal noncommercial use is free. Paid tiers mostly add tutorials, hints, detailed steps, or enhanced computation. Before paying, try the free tier on a problem from your current unit and see whether the steps are enough for you to follow.

Scope and limits of this guide

This guide does not rank these tools by measured accuracy, speed, or learning outcomes, and it does not claim hands-on testing. Feature descriptions come from the vendors’ own pages and from third-party comparisons published in 2026 and January 2020. Pricing figures from comparisons written by a vendor should be checked before purchase.

See the Photomath official product page for its step-by-step explanation claims: “Our step-by-step explanations help you break down problems so you can learn as you go.” That is the company’s own description, not an independent finding.
