A black screen right after you pick an entry in the GRUB menu usually means the bootloader did its job and the system stopped somewhere later: in the kernel, in the graphics driver, or in a startup step that needs input you cannot see. It is not evidence that the SSD has failed. The fastest route to a working system is to find the stage where the boot stops, then try the least invasive recovery path that fits that stage.

The steps below are written for Ubuntu, because that is where the available guidance is specific. If you run another distribution, the key presses and recovery entries may differ, but the diagnostic order still applies. Before you change firmware settings or touch the drive, write down exactly what appears on screen and at what point it stops.

Decide where the boot stops

Four different symptoms look alike from across the room, and each points somewhere different.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Blank before GRUB appears. The firmware never reached the boot menu. This is a firmware, display-cable, or boot-order question, not a Linux question.
  • Blank after selecting a normal Linux entry. The bootloader handed off to the kernel. The fault is in the kernel, the graphics driver, or the display path.
  • Freeze with a last message such as “Loading initial ramdisk.” The kernel started and got stuck while preparing the root filesystem.
  • A grub> rescue prompt. GRUB itself could not find its configuration or modules. This is a different problem from a blank screen after a successful menu choice. The GNU GRUB manual describes the rescue shell as its own situation, GRUB only offers a rescue shell, but detailed rescue repair is outside this guide.

There is also a hidden case. An encrypted Ubuntu installation can be waiting for a LUKS passphrase that is not drawn on screen, so the display looks dead. An older Ask Ubuntu answer, My computer boots to a black screen, what options do I have to fix it?, raises this possibility. Type your passphrase blind and press Enter once before assuming the machine is dead.

Try Ubuntu recovery mode

If the GRUB menu still appears, recovery mode is the first thing to try. It starts a minimal repair environment with basic services and a root shell, and it often gets past a graphics problem that stops the normal desktop path.

  1. Restart the machine and show the GRUB menu. On BIOS systems, hold Shift during startup. On UEFI systems, press Esc. Firmware fast-boot settings can skip the menu, so you may need to try several times.
  2. Select Advanced options for Ubuntu.
  3. Select the entry marked (recovery mode) for the kernel that was failing.
  4. In the recovery menu, choose resume to continue a normal boot, root for a shell, or the other listed tools as needed.

In the root shell, the root filesystem is mounted read-only at first. Ubuntu’s Recovery mode wiki page documents mount -o remount,rw / for repairs that need write access. Run write-capable repair commands only after you have identified the correct partition and confirmed you have a current backup of your data. Commands run against the wrong device can destroy data, so do not copy filesystem-repair commands from a forum post without checking the target first.

Test the graphics workaround: nomodeset

If the GRUB menu works but the normal entry goes black, a temporary kernel option can show whether the graphics driver is the cause. The older Ask Ubuntu answer linked above describes adding nomodeset to the Linux command line for one boot:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. At the GRUB menu, highlight the normal Ubuntu entry and press e.
  2. Find the line that begins with linux. Move to the end of that line.
  3. Add a space and nomodeset.
  4. Press Ctrl+X to boot with the edited line.

This change lasts for that boot only, so a reboot returns to the original configuration. nomodeset turns off kernel mode-setting for graphics and usually gives a basic display with reduced acceleration. It is a diagnostic. If the system boots with it, the next step is to install the correct graphics driver for your exact GPU and Ubuntu release, not to leave nomodeset permanently in place. The Ask Ubuntu answer was last edited in 2017, so check current driver instructions for your release before following any of its driver advice.

Make startup messages visible

If nomodeset does not help, you need to see where the boot stops. In the same GRUB edit screen, find quiet splash on the linux line and remove it, or replace splash with nosplash. The text output then shows the last messages before the failure. Write down the final line, because it tells you which subsystem is involved.

If the failure started after a kernel update, try an older kernel. Open Advanced options for Ubuntu in GRUB and pick a previous kernel version, if one is listed. A successful boot on the older kernel points toward the newer kernel or its driver stack. It does not by itself fix the newer kernel, so the next step is to reinstall or update the packages that depend on it, or to report the problem with the message you recorded.

Check Secure Boot only when a driver was involved

Secure Boot checks each boot component against trusted signatures, and it also requires kernel modules to be signed. Ubuntu’s UEFI Secure Boot documentation describes the chain: firmware trusts the Ubuntu shim, the shim validates GRUB and the kernel, and third-party modules must be signed and enrolled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This matters most when the black screen began right after you installed or updated a proprietary graphics driver. In that case, look for a blue MOK management screen or a module-signing prompt during the boot after the install, and follow Ubuntu’s documented enrollment steps. Do not disable Secure Boot as a first move. Turning it off changes the security posture of the machine and may not address the actual fault. Disable it only after you have confirmed the signing issue and you understand the trade-off.

Use live USB media when installed recovery cannot start

If GRUB never appears, or recovery mode itself will not load, boot from a Linux live USB. The live session runs from the stick and lets you inspect the installed disk, read logs, and mount partitions. A plain USB flash drive with a current Ubuntu image is enough for this. Choose a stick of reasonable size and expect that writing the image will erase it.

Live media is a diagnostic environment, not a verdict on the drive. If the live session can see the installed partitions and read their files, the SSD is probably healthy, and the fault lies in the boot path. If the live session cannot see the disk at all, then a hardware or firmware problem is more likely, and you should check the drive in another machine before drawing conclusions.

Match the symptom to the next test

Where the screen goes blank What it most likely points to First test Reversibility
Before the GRUB menu appears Firmware boot order, display connection, or fast-boot settings Hold Shift (BIOS) or Esc (UEFI) during startup; check boot order in firmware setup Easy to reverse; change one setting at a time
After a normal Ubuntu entry is selected Kernel or graphics driver Edit the entry with nomodeset for one boot Temporary; lasts for one boot
Freeze at “Loading initial ramdisk” Early startup problem, possibly a locked encrypted volume Remove quiet splash; check for a blind passphrase prompt Temporary GRUB edit
Failure began after a kernel update Newer kernel or its driver stack Boot an older kernel from Advanced options Choosing an older entry changes nothing permanently
Failure began after a proprietary driver install Module signing under Secure Boot Look for a MOK enrollment prompt; follow Ubuntu’s signing steps Enrollment is persistent; check before changing it
grub> rescue prompt GRUB cannot locate its configuration or modules Note the message; consult GRUB’s rescue documentation before editing anything Repair changes the bootloader; handle with care
Recovery mode also fails Possible disk, filesystem, or firmware problem Boot live USB and inspect the installed partitions Read-only inspection is safe

When the SSD is the real suspect

A blank screen alone does not justify replacing the drive. Replace or test the SSD only when several conditions line up: the live USB cannot see the installed partitions, filesystem checks report repeated read errors, or the same drive fails in another machine. Before you buy anything, confirm the drive’s form factor and interface, because an SSD for one laptop is not interchangeable with a SATA drive or an M.2 module in another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with the cheapest, reversible test, and move down the table one step at a time. Each step either fixes the problem or tells you which subsystem to investigate next.
