To preserve a large mural design as a high-resolution digital reference, capture the whole mural as a set of sharp, overlapping photographs, keep every original frame, build a stitched master only when one frame cannot hold the detail you need, and store that master with descriptive and technical metadata plus backup copies. Set the resolution from what the file must do, not from a single universal number. Official digitization guidance supports this approach in principle, but it does not give one camera setup or resolution for every installed mural, so the decisions below are yours to make and test.
Decide what the image must do first
Resolution is a consequence of use. A reference you inspect at arm’s length, an image for a printed book, and a full-size reproduction each need different detail. The FADGI guidance on pictorial materials says the quality of a master file should support the derivatives and uses that will be made from it, and it treats reproduction as one of those use cases. Its discussion of exhibition murals asks whether the resulting output is good enough for the job. It does not set a camera resolution for photographing a wall. FADGI pictorial materials guidance
Write down three things before you touch a camera:
- Purpose: personal reference, design transfer, condition documentation, publication, or future reproduction.
- Smallest detail to keep: a brushstroke edge, a line weight, a color boundary, a signature, or a small figure.
- Largest output: the biggest print or screen size the file must support, and the distance it will be viewed from.
Calculate the pixel target
Once you know the largest output, the arithmetic is straightforward. Pixels needed across the mural = output width in inches × target pixels per inch. For example, a mural 3 m (about 118.1 in) wide, reproduced at 150 ppi, needs roughly 17,700 pixels across. That figure is the result of your chosen print density, not a standard. Choose a density appropriate to the viewing distance, and state it in your metadata so later users know what the file was built for.

The retrieved official guidance supports these basics, but it does not prescribe exact light placement, lens, camera settings, or a universal overlap percentage for an installed mural. Those depend on the surface, ambient light, access, and equipment.

- Scan mode - 48 bit Color /16 bit Gray-Scale for Scan Art, Documents and Other Items
- Use a stable tripod or fixed position, and keep the camera parallel to the wall where possible. Angled shots introduce perspective distortion that stitching and measurement will both have to correct.
- Keep the mural in focus across the frame. Check focus on the far corners, not only the centre.
- Hold white balance and exposure constant across all frames. Lock them manually rather than letting the camera adjust between shots.
- Avoid digital zoom. The NARA technical guidelines warn that it enlarges a smaller captured portion by interpolation, which lowers effective resolution. Move the camera closer instead. NARA technical guidelines (PDF)
- Include a colour target in at least some frames if colour fidelity matters. FADGI treats targets as part of image quality monitoring, but a target is a tool, not a guarantee of accurate colour. Evaluate images on a calibrated monitor under controlled viewing conditions. FADGI digitization technical guidance
Capture the whole design in overlapping sections
If the full mural cannot be captured in one frame at the detail you calculated, photograph it as a grid. Work in a fixed order (left to right, top to bottom), and record it. Overlap gives stitching software shared features to align. The guidance does not give a percentage, so run a test on one section: stitch two neighbouring frames and check whether the software finds reliable matches. If it does not, increase the overlap. Make sure the edges of the design appear in the frames as well, because FADGI expects framing sufficient for the documentation purpose.
- Mark a fixed camera position and a grid on the floor or scaffold, and note the grid cell numbers.
- Shoot one test frame, open it at 100% zoom, and check focus and detail in the corners.
- Lock exposure, white balance, focus, and aperture on manual.
- Shoot the grid in order, saving each frame under its grid number (for example,
R01_C01.tif). - Keep a capture log with date, time, light conditions, equipment, and any moved obstacles.
Build and inspect the stitched master
Stitching uses shared features in overlaps to merge images, and the NARA guidance notes that it may cause degradation. Treat the stitched file as a derived product until it passes inspection. Keep the individual source frames as well.

- Scanner type: Document
- Connectivity technology: USB
- With Auto Scan Mode, the scanner automatically detects what you're scanning
- Digitize documents and images
- Stitch in a copy of the originals, never in place.
- Check seams at 100% zoom along every join, especially where tone or colour changes.
- Check geometry: straight lines, panel borders, and repeated motifs should not bend or double.
- Check the outer edges for missing areas or cropped design.
- Compare a small detail in the stitched file with the same detail in its source frame to confirm no loss.
When the stitched file fails inspection, the usual fixes are to add overlap, correct perspective in the source frames before stitching, or stitch smaller groups and combine them.

| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Visible seams with colour or tone steps | Exposure or white balance changed between frames | Re-shoot with locked manual settings; check the colour target in the affected frames |
| Repeated or doubled forms | Stitcher matched a repeating pattern incorrectly | Add manual control points if your software supports them, or stitch in smaller groups |
| Bent lines or warped panels | Camera angled to the wall | Re-shoot parallel to the surface; correct perspective before stitching |
| Soft detail in corners | Focus set at centre, or aperture too wide | Re-focus at the corners, check depth of field, and re-shoot the affected cells |
| Stitch fails to align | Too little overlap or uniform areas with few features | Increase overlap; capture a reference frame that includes some high-contrast detail |
| Detail looks sharp on screen but weak in print | Pixel count too low for the chosen print size | Recalculate with the pixel formula; re-shoot closer or in more cells |
Organise masters, derivatives, and metadata
Keep the original capture files unaltered. Preserve the stitched master separately, and create derivatives (web, sharing, print) with their own names so the master is never overwritten. Keep any EXIF data the camera wrote. Then add a record covering:

Back up and check the files
Keep at least one backup copy on separate storage from the working drive, and keep the master and its source frames together with their metadata. Check that someone other than you can find the files and understand the naming system. The guidance identifies long-term sustainability and disaster recovery as goals, but it does not name a backup product, storage architecture, or retention period. Set those through a preservation policy suited to your collection or project. Once a year, open a sample of files from the backup to confirm they still open and display correctly.
Where a web screenshot API fits
A photograph of a physical mural needs a camera, not a web tool. A screenshot API is useful when the mural design also exists as a web page, such as an artist’s online gallery, a digital mockup, or a design preview page that you want to archive at a fixed size. Capture that page as a PNG, JPEG, or WebP image, or as a PDF, and store it alongside the physical capture log.
