Mars appears in the Beehive star cluster (also called Praesepe) before sunrise on October 11, 2026. It sits in the same binocular field as the cluster for several mornings around that date, so you have a short window rather than a single moment. To see it, go outside about an hour before sunrise and face the eastern sky, where Jupiter is low in the east-southeast and Mars sits above and to the right of it.
When to look
The featured date is the morning of October 11, 2026. The observing guide by Jeffrey L. Hunt, which describes the event, says that Mars remains in the same binocular field as the cluster for several mornings. It does not name the final morning, so treat the days on either side of October 11 as a window and check the sky each morning rather than assuming a fixed schedule.
Timing depends on where you live. The guide’s example is Chicago, where sunrise on October 11 is 6:59 a.m. CDT. Use the following routine:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Look up the sunrise time for your city on October 11 in a local almanac or weather service.
- Subtract about one hour. That is the time to step outside.
- Give your eyes 10 to 15 minutes to adjust before you start scanning. Twilight will be brightening during that time, so the view will change as you wait.
In Chicago, that means stepping outside a little before 5:59 a.m. CDT. Because sunrise times shift by location and by date, check your own figure rather than using the Chicago number.

Where to look
Face the eastern sky. In the guide’s description, Jupiter is in the east-southeast and Mars is above and to the right of Jupiter. On October 11, Mars is nearly 14° above Jupiter. Mars is moving toward Jupiter over the following weeks and the two are closing the gap ahead of a conjunction on November 16, so the separation shown on October 11 will shrink over time.
The guide does not give the exact separation of Mars from the cluster on each morning, so use Jupiter and the cluster together as your reference points. If you can see Jupiter, you are facing the right part of the sky.

| Viewing method | What the cluster looks like | How Mars appears |
|---|---|---|
| Unaided eye, rural dark sky | A hazy cloud that the guide describes as looking larger than the Moon | Visible as a bright point within the hazy patch; the guide’s description confirms Mars appears to be in the cluster |
| Binoculars | A few dozen individual blue-white stars | Mars and the cluster fit together in the same field for several mornings |
Binoculars are helpful but not essential. You can see the basic event without them, provided the sky is dark enough for the haze to show. Any pair of astronomy binoculars will work for this purpose; the guide does not recommend a specific aperture, magnification, or model.

Moon and sky conditions
Astronomy.com’s 2026 lunar calendar lists October 9 as the New Moon. For a reference location at 40° N, 90° W, the calendar describes a 2% waxing crescent on October 11. A thin crescent produces very little moonlight, so it should not interfere much with the cluster. Your own moon phase and moonrise times will differ from that reference location, so check them for your position.
Other targets this week
McDonald Observatory’s October 2026 calendar lists other sky targets in the same period, including the Double Cluster on October 10, the asteroid Vesta on October 12, and the galaxy M33 on October 13. These are optional sidebars for the same mornings. The calendar is a general guide and does not establish the exact Mars separation or whether a particular horizon will be clear.

What the sources do not establish
- The exact angular separation between Mars and the cluster for each date from October 9 through 16.
- Mars’s apparent brightness or altitude on each morning.
- Visibility at latitudes other than the Chicago example. A location-specific sky chart or ephemeris will give you accurate times and positions for your site.
The distance figures in the guide, nearly 148 million miles from Earth to Mars in the described view and 590 light-years to the Beehive, describe this event only. They are not general figures for Mars’s distance.
