A client-side redaction tool edits an image inside your browser or on your device, so the photo does not have to be uploaded to a server to have faces or personal details covered. That is the promise vendors make. Whether a particular tool keeps that promise is something you can check, and the kind of obscuring you apply matters just as much as where the processing happens.
What “client-side” means, and what it does not guarantee
In a client-side tool, the work of detecting faces or text, drawing masks, and exporting the edited file happens on the machine you are using. The reviewed vendor pages describe this model for browser-based tools such as PrivaCanvas, RedactCam, and RedactPix. These are vendor claims. None of the tools was independently audited for this article, and the pages do not publish a code review or a full list of network behavior.
A local-processing claim answers one question: where the pixels are processed. It does not answer whether the tool is safe in every other respect. A page can be served from a server, load third-party scripts, or send usage data while the image itself stays local. Treat “client-side” as a starting point for verification, not as a finished privacy guarantee.
How to check a local-processing claim yourself
RedactCam suggests a practical test in its own words: “You can verify this yourself with the browser’s DevTools Network tab while processing, or by going offline.” You can run both checks on any browser tool.

- Open the tool in Chrome, Edge, or Firefox, then press F12 (or Cmd+Option+I on a Mac) to open Developer Tools.
- Select the Network tab and tick Preserve log so requests are kept if the page reloads.
- Clear the list, then load your image and run detection and masking. Watch for any upload request whose payload is the image or a large base64 string.
- Export the result, then check the list again for any request sent after the export.
- Disconnect from the internet (or switch on airplane mode), reload the page if the tool still works offline, and repeat steps 3 and 4. A tool that needs a connection to process an image has a server-side step you should understand before using it on sensitive material.
Passing these checks is useful evidence, not proof. It shows what the page sent during one session. It does not reveal the tool’s full code, its dependencies, or behavior that only appears under other conditions.
Blur is not anonymization
Blurring a face with a Gaussian filter can look like it hides someone, but it is weaker than most people assume. A paper titled “Restoring Gaussian Blurred Face Images for Deanonymization Attacks” reports that blurred faces can be restored and cautions against using Gaussian blur for face anonymization. The summary available for this article did not give its evaluation conditions or a quantified level of risk, so treat it as a clear caution rather than a measured failure rate.

For sensitive images, the more cautious choice is an opaque solid mask over the region, or pixelation strong enough that the underlying shapes are not recoverable. Use the same rule for names, phone numbers, addresses, and account numbers: a faint blur over text is not redaction.

1. Run automatic detection, then review every region
The reviewed tools offer face detection, and RedactPix also describes optional sensitive-text scanning. None of the vendor pages publishes comparable accuracy figures. Expect the tool to miss some faces, especially in profile, at small sizes, or under heavy shadow, and to select areas that are not sensitive. Check every suggested box against the original image before you export.

2. Add manual masks for anything missed
Draw manual masks over faces, screen names, email addresses, plate numbers, and any other identifying detail the detector did not select. Manual masking is the step that matters most, because the detector does not know what is personal to you. Make each mask larger than the text or feature it covers, so edge pixels do not give the content away.
3. Choose the obscuring style deliberately
The reviewed vendors describe blur, pixelation, and opaque covers in various combinations. Use an opaque cover for text and identity-linked details. Reserve pixelation for images where some visual context must remain. Avoid light blur for anything you need to protect.

4. Export and inspect the flattened file
Open the exported file in a separate viewer, not in the editor, and zoom to 100 percent around every masked area. Confirm that no part of the original is visible underneath, at the edges, or in a transparent layer. If the export is a flattened PNG, that is what you want. If it keeps layers or the original file, do not share it.
Metadata: what vendors say and what to check
Photos often carry EXIF data, which can include camera details, timestamps, and GPS coordinates. The reviewed vendors make specific claims about removing it. PrivaCanvas says it generates a new PNG without copying source EXIF metadata. RedactCam says re-encoding strips EXIF and GPS data. RedactPix describes a flattened PNG with metadata stripped. These are vendor statements, and they may not match every browser, format, or export setting.

If location or device data matters, check the actual downloaded file. On Windows, right-click the file, choose Properties, then open the Details tab. On macOS, select the file and press Command+I, or open it in Preview and check Tools, then Show Inspector. Look for GPS fields and camera model. If any remain, do not share the file, and use a different export route or a metadata-removal tool you have verified.
Comparing the reviewed tools
The reviewed options are not ranked here, because the evidence does not establish comparable detection accuracy, language coverage, performance limits, or independent security audits. The table lists only what each vendor page states. “Not stated” means the vendor page did not describe that feature in the material reviewed.

Compare tools on the points that can be checked: whether processing can be confirmed offline, whether you can add manual masks and correct detections, which masking styles exist, what the export format is, and which platforms and image formats are supported. Vendor features and platforms change, so confirm them on the product page before you depend on a tool.
Troubleshooting
- A face or name is still visible after export. The region was not detected or the mask was too small. Reopen the original, add a manual mask larger than the feature, and export again.
- The tool stops working when you go offline. Processing probably depends on a server or a remote script. Stop using it for sensitive images, and check the Network tab to see what was sent.
- The exported file still shows GPS or device data. The vendor’s metadata claim did not hold for that export path. Remove the metadata with a verified tool, then recheck the file’s properties.
- A faint blur can still reveal the face. Replace the blur with an opaque mask or stronger pixelation, then inspect the export at full zoom.
- The tool asks you to log in or upload before processing. That is a sign the processing is not local. Do not upload sensitive images to it.
Use this checklist before sharing any redacted image: the processing location was checked, every detected region was reviewed, manual masks cover what the detector missed, the obscuring is opaque or strongly pixelated, the export was inspected at full zoom, and metadata was checked in the file itself.
