Hermes WebUI and Open WebUI are not two rival versions of the same product. Hermes Agent is the agent runtime. Hermes WebUI is a browser interface built around an existing Hermes setup. Open WebUI is a general-purpose chat frontend that can also connect to Hermes Agent through its OpenAI-compatible API. If you want a browser workflow centred on Hermes, Hermes WebUI is the more direct fit. If you want a wider chat workspace with document retrieval, plugins, web search and team sharing, Open WebUI is the better match, and it can front Hermes Agent as one of its connections. The two can also be used together.
Keep the names and roles straight
“Hermes WebUI” in this article means the project at the nesquena/hermes-webui repository. Its README says it runs on the Hermes agent and models you already have. Open WebUI is a separate project with its own documentation, and its official integration guide describes connecting to the Hermes Agent API server as an OpenAI-compatible endpoint.
Three roles are easy to blur together:
- Hermes Agent is the runtime. It receives requests, decides on tool use and executes the tools it has been configured to run.
- Hermes WebUI is a browser front end for that Hermes setup.
- Open WebUI is a browser front end for many kinds of models and services, one of which can be a Hermes Agent API server.
Open WebUI’s documentation also separates a plain model provider, which takes a prompt and returns a response, from an agent, which can choose and execute tools. That distinction is the key to understanding where work actually happens when you use either interface.

These are fit criteria, not a ranking. Agent products are converging on features such as memory, scheduling and tools, so do not choose on those alone without checking the current release documentation for each product.

Current status and limits
- As of early October 2026, the Hermes WebUI README states that full agent-loop delegation is not yet shipped. Treat the in-process default and gateway mode as the current behaviour, and recheck the README before you plan a deployment.
- Feature sets and integration details change between releases. Setup steps below follow the official documentation as it stood at the time of writing.
- The default endpoint and Docker host name shown below are documented examples, not universal network settings. Your ports and firewall rules may differ.
Connect Open WebUI to Hermes Agent
The official setup flow has four stages. Hermes Agent’s own documentation covers the exact configuration keys, so use it for those details.
- Enable the Hermes API server in your Hermes Agent configuration.
- Set an API key for that server.
- Start the Hermes gateway.
- In Open WebUI, open the admin connection settings and add the Hermes endpoint and API key.
When both programs run on the same machine, the documented default endpoint is http://localhost:8642/v1. When Open WebUI runs in Docker and Hermes runs on the host, the guide uses host.docker.internal in place of localhost so the container can reach the host.

After saving the connection, send a short test message. If the model list is empty or requests fail, confirm the Hermes gateway is running, the API key matches exactly, and the endpoint host is reachable from wherever Open WebUI is running.

Where Hermes tools run and why it matters
With the API-server setup, Hermes runs the agent on its own host. If your browser talks to a Hermes API server on a remote computer, file operations and other configured tools run on that remote computer, not on your laptop. This affects three things:

- Security: the host running the API server is the one the agent can act on, so review its permissions before you expose it.
- File access: files the agent reads or writes are the ones on that host, not the ones on the machine showing the chat window.
- Troubleshooting: if a tool result looks wrong, check the logs and file state on the Hermes host first.
Which one should you use?
- Choose Hermes WebUI if your work starts and ends with Hermes Agent and you want the interface built around that setup.
- Choose Open WebUI if you need a general chat workspace with document retrieval, web search, plugins or shared access for a team, and you are comfortable connecting it to Hermes as one option among several.
- Use both if you want the Hermes-centred browser workflow for day-to-day operation and Open WebUI for broader chat, since both can talk to the same Hermes setup.
Whichever you pick, decide first which machine should run the agent and which files it should be able to reach. That choice matters more for security and day-to-day behaviour than the choice of browser front end.
