“Create an image” on Windows 10 can mean four different things, and they do not replace one another. Installation media lets you install or reinstall Windows. A Recovery Drive lets you boot and repair Windows system files. A restore point lets you roll back system changes. A personal-file backup protects your documents, photos and settings. Choose the option that matches the problem you need to solve, then follow the matching steps below.

Which option matches your goal

The table compares the four options on purpose, contents, storage and whether the process erases existing data. Each step-by-step section below covers one option in detail.

Option Main purpose What it captures Storage needed Erases existing data
Windows 10 installation media (USB) Install or reinstall Windows Windows setup files, not your personal files Blank USB flash drive, at least 8 GB Yes, the USB drive’s contents are deleted
Windows 10 ISO file Use in a virtual machine or burn to DVD Windows installation image Free disk space on your PC (the required size is not stated in Microsoft’s guide) Not stated for ISO creation
Recovery Drive Boot and repair Windows Windows system files, updates installed at creation time, manufacturer customizations Empty USB drive (Microsoft does not specify a capacity) Yes, the USB drive’s existing data is erased
Restore point Roll back system changes System files, registry settings and installed programs Disk space reserved for restore points on the system drive Not stated
Windows Backup Protect personal files and settings Selected user folders synced to OneDrive, plus settings and preferences Personal Microsoft account and OneDrive storage Not stated

Check your Windows 10 support status first

Microsoft’s installation-media guide states: “Support for Windows 10 has ended on October 14, 2025.” After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance or security fixes for Windows 10, and it recommends moving to Windows 11. Your PC keeps working after support ends, but it will not receive new security fixes. That makes a current backup and a tested recovery method more important on a machine that stays on Windows 10.

Create Windows 10 installation media or an ISO

Installation media is for installing a new copy of Windows, performing a clean installation or reinstalling. It is not a backup of your personal files and it is not an image of your configured system. Back up your important files before you install or reinstall.

Create a USB installation drive

  1. Connect a blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of free capacity. Microsoft says the drive must be blank because the tool deletes its existing contents.
  2. Open Microsoft’s Windows 10 download page and select Download Now under Create Windows 10 Installation Media.
  3. Run the downloaded MediaCreationTool.exe. The filename can include a version suffix, such as MediaCreationTool_22H2.exe.
  4. Follow the prompts in the tool and choose the USB flash drive option when asked to create media.
  5. Wait for the tool to finish, then keep the drive labeled and stored safely for later use.

Create an ISO file instead

Choose the ISO option in the same tool when you need an installation image for a virtual machine or want to burn installation media to a DVD. A USB drive is not required for the ISO itself. Microsoft’s guide does not state a required ISO file size, so confirm that your PC has enough free disk space before you start.

Create a Recovery Drive

A Recovery Drive is a bootable repair tool. It is separate from installation media: it contains Windows system files, updates installed when it was created and any manufacturer customizations, but it does not contain your personal files. Microsoft recommends recreating it once a year, because the system files it holds become outdated as Windows is updated.

  1. Click Start, type Recovery Drive, and open the app. You can also run recoverydrive.exe.
  2. In the Recovery Drive window, leave Back up system files to the recovery drive selected, then select Next.
  3. Connect an empty USB drive, select it in the list, and select Next. Microsoft warns that the process erases the drive’s existing data.
  4. Select Create and wait until the process finishes.

To use the drive later, boot the PC from it and open Windows Recovery Environment. Boot steps vary by computer manufacturer, so check your manufacturer’s documentation if the boot menu differs from Microsoft’s general guidance.

Secure Boot compatibility caveat

Microsoft notes a specific compatibility issue. A Recovery Drive created and used on a PC that has the April 9, 2024 security update and the revocation policy applied may be affected by Secure Boot changes associated with CVE-2023-24932. Microsoft refers to KB5025885 for details. This note applies only to that configuration, not to every PC.

Create a restore point

A restore point is not a full system image. System Protection is turned off by default, so you must enable it before Windows can create restore points.

  1. Click Start, type Create a restore point, and open it. The System Properties window opens.
  2. Select the System Protection tab, then select Configure.
  3. Choose the option to turn on system protection.
  4. Set the maximum disk-space allocation for restore points, then select Apply.
  5. To create a point now, return to the System Protection tab, select Create, enter a description and confirm.

Windows can also create restore points automatically when it needs to. Use System Restore to revert the selected point, which rolls back system files, registry settings and installed programs.

What a restore point does not cover

  • It is not a copy of your personal files, so deleted documents and photos are not recovered by System Restore.
  • It is meant for reverting system changes, such as a driver or program installation that causes problems.
  • It depends on System Protection being enabled before the problem occurs.

Back up personal files and settings with Windows Backup

Windows Backup is the option for protecting the files and settings that installation media and restore points do not cover. Microsoft’s guide describes the consumer app and requires a personal Microsoft account. It does not work with work or school Microsoft accounts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Sign in to Windows with your personal Microsoft account.
  2. Open the Windows Backup app from Start.
  3. Select the user folders you want to sync with OneDrive.
  4. Choose the available settings and preferences you want included.
  5. Select Back up.

Microsoft’s guide states that a free Microsoft account includes 5 GB of OneDrive storage. This was the figure given in the guide at the time of checking. Storage allowances can change, so confirm your current OneDrive storage in your Microsoft account before relying on it for large folders.

Cloud or external drive: choosing where the backup goes

Microsoft’s backup comparison identifies two broad approaches. Choose based on your situation:

  • Cloud backup suits users with reliable internet access who want an off-device copy without managing hardware.
  • External or network drive backup suits users without internet access, and users with large or numerous files that could take longer or cost more to upload.

An off-device copy of your personal files is what protects them if the PC itself fails, so decide where the copy will live before you need it.

Putting the options together

  • If you are installing or reinstalling Windows on a new or wiped PC, create installation media and back up your personal files first.
  • If Windows will not start, use a Recovery Drive to boot and access Windows Recovery Environment.
  • If a recent change caused instability, use a restore point to roll back system changes.
  • If you need to protect your documents and settings against loss, set up Windows Backup and choose a cloud or external storage location.

These options work together rather than as substitutes. Installation media does not restore your files, a restore point does not preserve documents, and a Recovery Drive does not include your personal data.
